MISS CLARA HOWARD CLARA HOWARD 1865-1935 The 1ate Miss Clara A. Howard, a member of the first class to be graduated from Spelman Sem- inary, now Spelman College, was one of those women who are not easily forgotten. She was born January 23, 1865, and received her early education from her father, who placed a high value on learning. As a young girl Clara met Sophie Packard and Harriet Giles, admired them, and was enrolled with the first class in Friendship Basement. She made rapid progress and was soon made a pupil assistant. Clara Howard was graduated with the first class in 1887. 1With her excellent record she had no dif- chlty in finding a teaching job; but the field of missions soon made a stronger appeal. In April of 1890 Miss Howard left Atlanta and three months later arrived at her foreign post of duty, Lukungu, Congo, Southwest Africa, where She soon became teacher, doctor, nurse, and missionary at Lukungu Seminary. During her stay in the Congo Clara Howardk life was a constant battle against superstition and disease; at the end of five years her hea1th became so impaired that she could no longer meet the many difhculties she had to encounter. In May, 1895, she returned to America to rest and to try to regain her health, but hoping to be able at some time to return to Africa. NIiSS Howard served as matron at Spelman for twenty-nine years, unti1 ill health forced her to retire. Nevertheless, until her death on May 3, 1935, she dedicated herself to carrying on as she had long ago proposed to do in a letter written from Africa and dated August 19, 1891: HI am endeavoring to keep my hands to the plow, and to do with my might the Work that is given me to do.H
