The expansion program at S.H.S. continued in the spring of '58 by breaking ground for a new eight classroom wing at the west end of the building. The new wing received much interest and recognition from Speedwayites--young and old. The new wing was completed and the first classes were held on December 1, 1959. Dur- ing the P.T.A. Open House on March 3, the eight new rooms were the focal point for tour- ing visitors. . . .THE FINISHED PRODUCT URROU DI mls it real?' Although the art display as Christmas looked bonafide, no student tried to sample it. The member of Mr. Praed's art classes worked together making their display the most original at S.H.S. The early Christmas present for the art department was the new room with more space and better facilities. Problems of elbows are no longer a bother. Progress in the science department was emphasized at Speedway High this year both by a new biology room with stainless steel equipment and by forming a new science club. The new Junior High Science Club was established to get more Speedwayites interested in the science field. First period class, Jouralism III and IV, was for those interested in working on the annual. Fifth period class, Journalism I and II, was for those pupils interested in publishing the newspaper. This year in Journalism I and II 29 pupils served as reporters. Maryann Dobson, Editor-in-chief, was the only elected editor, this year was her second year on the Speedette staff. Other editorships were alternated and shared by each member of the staff. Through- out the year Maryann and her staff published numerous extras in ad- EW PAPER Who, what, why, where, when, and how were the bywords of the News Bureau. EW B REA YEARBOOK STAFF What's most important in putting out an annual? Money! Lorraine Lamm, David Knoll, subscription manager, Sheron Melton, advertising manager, Sandy Wysong, Dick Hensley, and Diane Woodward found the job of soliciting advertising and subscriptions a time consuming job but kept at it. These staff mem- bers obtained the most of the advertising and sold the most subscriptions, Two heads are better than one is a wise saying. Co-editors Donna Wright and Dolores Blankinship found out the position of editor is a responsible job with much reward. The members of the annual staff found that it's easier to buy an an- nual and read it than to put it together, but the satisfaction of the finish- ed product on distribution day is a rewarding experience. Part of the staff here work with Miss Spencer, sponsor, preparing copy and reports: ibackl Sue Thompson, faculty, Sandy Wysong, typist, Sharon Tarplee, features, Jim McMahon, sports, fcenterl Sheron Melt- on, ads, Linda Swails, seniors, Judy Standiford, underclassmen, ffrontl Dave Knoll, subscriptions, Dick Hensley, business assistant, Knot in pic- ture? AT THE LAST BANQUET i g4F '?'s W y 5 On May 10, 1958, the Juniors and Seniors gathered at the I.U. Medical Center dining room to enjoy the traditional Junior-Senior banquet. N2 OF HO OR WO The high-light of Honor Day 1958 for the juniors was the instal- lation of new members into the National Honor Society. Eighteen juniors were accepted into the organization last year. The D.A.R. award this year went to Janice Gale. This award is given to the senior girl who has shown outstand- ing citizenship in her school career. Janice was chosen by a vote of the faculty from a list of nominations made by the senior class. Also on Honor Day of last year, the candidates were announced to attend Hoosier Girls' and Boys' State at In- diana University. Candidates were chosen on the basis of scholarship and character by the principal, in consultation with the teachers. Chosen to attend were Rosemary Strouse, Judy Standiford, Sharon Tarplee, Linda Swails, Sue Todd, Jeanie Piper, Janice Gale, Jim McMahon, and Bill Williams. August 15, 1958, Speedway High School's footbal season was officially opened. As is usual many boys fron many different walks of life came in from their summei jobs to begin a new job of working for Coach Johnsor and his assistants. Foreman Johnson knew his job well for this would be the twenty-second team with which he would work. Assistant Coach Clark was no stranger tc the gridiron either, for this was his fifth year as assistant coach. Although this was Assistant Coach Crumley's first year teaching and coaching at Speedway, it was not his first year working with Coach Johnson. While in high school, Mr. Crumley played under Coach Johnson as a Speedway letterman. With this combination at the reins, the boys from Speedway marched boldly up to the working harness and strapped it on. The harness symbolized hard work, sweat, discouragement, and fatique, but finally our team was rounded into shape. As last year, our team was to employ the side saddle- Y formation, similar to Indiana University's formation oi last year. Our defense was to be altered for every con- test. This would not leave us vulnerable from any one who might have scouted our previous games. We started with a nucleus of 13 seniors which helped a great deal in early season practices and later on in the campaign. Our team accumulated a record of four wins and four losses which placed us right square on the .500 mark. This achievement, although not of the highest quality usually found at Speedway High, was, nevertheless, a just and good pay for the 1958 footballers from Speedway High School. gs brace themselves to protect Tom Slater's punt against the De- as E S The football for the first game is tossed from the hands of Janette .lol- liff, athletic queen, to Captain 'lim Ml'- Mahon. With many arms and legs waving madly for the ball, the whistle blows and a jump is called. The 1958-1959 Speedway High School basketball season was one of hard work the first three quarters and defeat the fourth. Speedway, after leading many teams for three quarters of the game, would fall behind in the final minutes of play, losing to their oppon- ent. This phenomenon was responsible for at least five of Speedway's defeats. Speedway was unable to convert any tourney games into victories, losing their first game in the Marion County Tourney at Southport and their first game of the Section- al with Tech. Our Sparkplugs lost in an over- time to the Bulldogs, but this was the start of a fine season. Although our team fell 10 more times, our 8 wins stood out as fine efforts. Speedway, although leading at the end of the third quarter in many contests, was unable to turn the trick for a winning final score, as they lost in many cases, with just seconds to go. From our Reserve Team will come many of next year's Varsity players. ':f-'-.t-:- 1-:.1-1-r1.1-:-sg-1-.4-:bw I All over the world there is a new push behind scientific and technological effort. And right here in Indianapolis new things General Motors. Meeting the challenge of the space age, Allison has expanded its research activity-formed a new missiles department-and reorganized its engineering depart- ment to better meet military and commercial needs in many fields including manned aircraft, missile and rocket propulsion systems. Much of this work is directed far into the future as scientists and researchers, behind closed doors, project new ways into outer space. But thatis not all. Other groups are concentrating on new products for today and tomorrow which will mean continued production volume and employment in Indianapolis' largest industry. There's a new airplane in the Indiana skies. It's a Lockheed Electra powered with four Allison prop-jet engines and Aeroproducts propellers. It signals the entrance of Allison into an entirely new tield-com- mercial air transportation. But engines for the Electra represent only the first step in this growing new business for Allison. For instance, there's a new 250 horsepower turbine engine are going on at the Allison Division of which Allison is developing for military and commer- cial light planes and helicopters. Small in size and only one-fourth the weight of present aircraft engines of the same power, the engine enables light plane manu- facturers to design lighter and less costly aircraft, but with greatly improved speed and altitude performance. More and more highway truck users today are enjoy- ing the many benefits of fulhz automatic transmissions, thanks to Allison. Drawing on its extensive experience in developing and producing heavy-duty transmissions for off-highway use, Allison now has developed a fully automatic truck transmission for medium and heavy trucks. It is now available on trucks manufactured by Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge and GMC and soon will be offered on other truck lines. Another new product, designed, developed and produced by Indianapolis people, is the Allison Kar- Go bearing which eliminates hot boxes on railroad cars at a new, low cost. Yes, new things are going on at Allison-and there is much more to come. VISIT THE POWERAMA Highlights ofthe Allison diversified engineering and manufacturing activity are presented in interesting fashion in the Allison POWERAMA. The POWERAMA is an exciting exhibit, representing what Allison is . . . what Allison does. You are invited to visit the POWERAMA and see the many products and achievements of one ol lndiana's principal industries. Requests for available dates for group visits should bein writing to POWERAMA, Allison Division, General Motors Cor- poration, lndianapolis 6, Indiana.
