On campus at Indiana University, where they attended the Eleventh High School Journalism lnstitute last summer, Nancy Lewis and Edythe Coulson, co-editors of the Speedette, take pointers from Ed Poste on the use of a Speed-Graphic. While attending the two-week session, Ed re- ceived a first place award for a feature photograph. He and Nancy also received citizenship awards, and Nancy won first place in the ln- stitute talent show. Editors need plenty of good assistance land assist- antsl. Richard Weaver, subscription sales mana- ger, conducted a subscription drive which resulted in the sale of 450 Speedettes. To boost annual purchases the iournalism class presented a skit before the student body. Lee Clark, sports editor, and Gary Borrow, business manager, spent many hours working on their respective staff jobs. Virginia Nizamoff lstondingl editor of the faculty section and chief of the news bureau confers with Mary King, editor of the underclossmen sec- tion, and Helen Hargitt, editor of the senior sec- tion. Virginia also attended the Journalism lnsti- tute Iast summer where she studied news bureau techniques and won first place for a featurette article on Pizza. Cn Our School Yes, this is our school. Within its walls we have gained six years of knowledge, experience, and maturity. Under the guidance of our teachers we have been instructed in the basic fundamentals of edu- cation, many of which we shall retain, many of which we have al- ready forgotten. We have seen many changes, not only in the world around us, but also in the school of which we are a part. Our music facilities, for example, have expanded from a small room at one end of the mechanical arts department to the modernistic structure pictured above. This building contains large band and chorus rooms, practice rooms, individual compartments for all musical instruments, two lock- er rooms, and a music library. As we shine the spotlight on our most treasured senior memor- ies, we hope that you too will take pleasure in remembering the events of this year---this year of Sputnicks, Edsels, the sack look, and the stroll --most important to us, though, the year of our gradu- ation---1958. -3. Hot dog! Schools aut! and the student body thunders out of the rooms, down the stairs, and through the halls. Their destina- tion?-home, a iob, or a buzz around the Pole. With an enrollment increase come many changes--among them the necessity for a second admission gate at the home football games. Mr. Sallee sells tickets to a Sparlcplug fan, while others wait in line for their turn. Seniors are thought to be pretty special people, therefore, they have a few special privileges. Nancy Straub models her hand painted senior skirt, which is one of the many senior fads. Oh-h-h, What a mess! Sen- iors Nancy Beaman and Marcia Edwards do their spring house --oops!--locker cleaning. .4- Where We Worked . S Type, type, type, scope, scope, scope, pass the correction fluid ...these sounds are characteristic of the publications room. Putting out a newspaper requires a lot of hard work as Sharon Ashley, Carole Evans, Virginia Nizamott, Don Boles, and Jim McMahon will testify. Jim McClamroch, production chief, demonstrates the use of the Gestetner as Jack Albright tries to learn the routine. ' mx 'li 5 -,Ii 'A.. Produce, produce, produce--That is what the iournalism class does. To get the scoop on a news story, to write interesting feature articles, to create controversial editorials, or to pen a birds eye view of a sporting event are the jobs of those pictured above. Often, however, problems arise. Edythe Coulson asks Miss Spencer's advice, as Jim McClamroch tries to solve his own predicament. Editor-in-chief of the Speedway Speedette this year was Nancy Lewis, assisted by Delores Blankin- ship, Edythe Coulson was news page editor with Maryann Dobson as her assistant. Other page editors and their assistants were Editorial page, Donna Wright and Mary King, Feature page, Carole Evans and Sharon Ashley, Sports page, Don Boles and Jim McMahon. Others served as staff reporters. -5. 'X 1 1 The rain in Spain lies mainly in the plain --Steve Patrick, Bill Beck, Jerry Black, Mike Gradison, Mike Swift, and Mike Taylor practice their diction as they learn the qualifications of a good radio announcer. You'll never hit me, taunt the targets in a game of dodgeball. The members of this eighth grade class are keeping physically fit under the instruction of Mr. Sallee. - 6 How do you peel? ask Judy Kendall and Kae Ewing as Steve Bradley, Kent McCoy and Mr. Sallee offer their mas culine advice to the lady dr: vers. Seventh graders require a lot of instruction before they are prepared to be in the high school band and the Sparkle-Aires. Assisting Mr. Wicker in his difficult task this year were Mr. John Gentry, a student teacher from Indiana State Teachers' College, and Miss Rust,a graduate of ISTC. Vanguard, Explorer, Sputnik ---familiar words in the English language created new interest in math and science. Mr. Clark, biology teacher, imparts instruction on the vein system of a leaf to freshman biology students, Sheryl Forsythe and Corky Queener. Bill Tingle, a sophomore, locates point O while proving a proposition in Mrs. Welborn's geometry class. These students are receiving the basic fundamentals in the important fields of math and science. -7- . And Studied Adding color and gaiety to Mrs. Hine's iunior literature class is the Christmas window, which is painted each year by the high school art class, under the guidance of Miss Waltz. This year Pat Kuczenski created the design for the window. Site 5211: Mrs. Rose Kendall, a new teacher at Speedway this year, reminds John Harris not to for- get his commas in the inside address of o friendly letter. Peggy Bonham demonstrates the use ofthe salutation in her friendly letter. Substituting for Miss Waltz is Mrs. Helen Kelley. These seven- th grade art students stay busy even in the absence ot their teacher. You want my picture? asks Bob Wason, as he looks up from his desk in the mechanical drawing class. Others are Cor- ky Queener and Ronnie LaFe- berlin the backgroundl and Ronnie Rupert, Dick Kelley, Dave Dobson, Don Boles, Tom Whitton, Jerry Foland, ond Jack Albright. The hunt and peck system is no longer utilized by these sophomore typing students. Their instructor is Mr. Foland. -3, Mrs. Hertz, the most recent new- comer to Speedway, instructs her eighth grade gym class as they take part in a series of relay races. She replaced Mrs. Coppes during the second semester. . And Learned Was ist das? asks Sharon Tarplee. Miss Maimu Leetmae, a new teacher at Speedway this year, teaches both Spanish and English in addition to her German class pictured here. Miss Pumphrey, another new addition to the faculty, instructs Nancy Dowden in the art of blocking a sweater, while the rest of her freshman home- making class learn by ear and eye. -9. l i We are the office assistants who help in the office one period each day, say Brooke Meeder, Annette Riggs, Jean Ann Thompson, Wanda Miller, Alice Decker, Susie Thomp- son, Janie Hardin, Sandy Wysong, Layna Hamilton, Melinda McArthur, Janet Schindler, Carole Wenning, Diana Arnold, and Janette Jolliff. Fans, students, and coaches alike OPP know that without the cooperation of every team member this would not have been possible. 20 Linebacker and guard Geri Bishop proved to be invalu- able on defense as well as offense. Coach Johnson was quoted J4 in one of the Indianapolis newspapers as saying, He is the 18 best linebacker l have ever coached. Fred MacAbee, winner T2 of the Most Improved Player Award, stopped many opponents 0 who tried to go up in the middle. Fred was at his best in the 0 Beech Grove game where he made a moiority of the tackles. 0 Tom Jones, one of the four sophomores to win a letter, took 13 over the quarterbacking duties and proved to be a top notch passer as well as a deceptive runner. Don Boles, the Spark- plug's right end, drew many oh's and ah's from the crowd with his unbelievable pass catching. Bob O'Neal, Bill Williams, Don Sweet, Mike Beck, Jim McMahon, and Nick Nizamoff were outstanding linemen, while Eddie Skeeters, Mike Hesselgrave, Bob Templin were backs to be proud of. Ronnie Bell, senior' halfback, was on his way to a fine season when he received a shoulder iniury in the Decatur Central game and was lost for the remainder of the season. These boys could not have reach- ed championship caliber had it not been for the hours of practice spent with the boys who did not quite earn a varsity letter. This year's second and third stringers will compose next year's varsity and later championship teams. -64- Captain Bishop and Co-captain O'Neal lead a determined Speedway team onto the field for the second half. Mike Hesselgrave finds the Beech Grove defense asleep and hauls in an aerial for a substantial gain. Crowds of people thronged through the gate to wit- ness the first home football game in which the event- ual Marion County Champs rolled over Decatur Cen- tral with a 20-l4 victory. Booms of the drums and the piercing shrill of the whistle commanded silence as the 87-strong band marched onto the field at the half time with the strut- ting drum maior, Jim McAllister, at the head. The highlight ot the season came with the presenta- tion ofthe new electric scoreboard by the Lions Club who several years ago sparked the drive for the pre- sent lights on the athletic field. -67 Co-captains Bob O'Neal and Geri Bishop, both three letter winners, were elected to captain Sparky's gridiron team for the 1957 season. Geri finished his three years of var- sity play by being selected on the All- County team. Coach Johnson will lose ten seniors from this year's championship team. This year's Reserve Team, under the direction of Coach Morris Pollard, proved to Coach Johnson that there is plenty of talent available for him in the next few years. This team compiled a l-l-l record. In their first game they were held to a 6-6 tie by the Danville Warriors. In their second encounter on the gridiron Spar- ky's boys were overpowered by a l3-l O score by the Bulldogs from Brownsburg. Beech Groves Hornets felt the full force of the Speedway offense when Coach Pollard's lads romped away with a 33-O decision. Bill Tingle, Ronnie Power, and Don Akers supplied some sparkling backfield play while Tom Bray, Jerry Bru- baker, and Roger Helser came through in the line. ln the freshmen's only game of the year they smashed the visiting Mooresville Pioneers by a 27-0 score. Mr. Pollard recruited some very fine material for next year's Varsity and Reserve teams. Among the hope- fuls in the backfield are Don Ellison, Ronnie Power, Don Akers, and Phil Loffland. Center Tom Bray gained recognition for outstanding play in the line. Jerry Brubaker will, no doubt, be a candidate for an end posi- tion. Mr. Sallee, Mr. Pollard, and Mr. Neat, coach- es of the 7th and 8th grade, varsity, and freshman and reserve teams respectively, are seen discussing some of the finer points of play in the Pollard System. -70- Morris Pollard, in his first year as head mentor of the Sparkplugs' Varsity basketball team, rebounded the T957-58 squad from a dismal l956-57 record to a 9 win, ll lost re- cord. This year's team, minus an individual scoring star, had balanced scoring from all five starters. There were several bright spots in this year's cage season. The sparkling floor play of sophomore guard Tom Jones and the late season surge of iunior center Bob Cox has Speedwayites anxious for next year's hardwood season. The consistent floor leader- ship of senior guard and captain Don Boles, the able rebounding of Mike Hesselgrave and Tom Emmick proved to be valuable assets. Junior forward Eddie Skeeters, winner of the F.B.L.A. Foul Shot Award, came through in many games with his uncanny accuracy at the free throw line. Coach Pollard will have iun- ior forward Jim McMahon, Eugene Enlow, and Mike Beck to bolster the Sparkplugs' attack next year. Ronnie Bell, senior guard, and Bob O'Neal, forward and center, came off the bench in many close games to give Sparky's lads a hand. Student managers, Joe Griffin, John Hood, and Richie Schwimmer discuss their respon- sibilities in aiding the basketball teams. Nancy Beaman, captain of this year's yell leaders, has served two years as a varsity yell leader. Marcia Edwards, sen- ior, has also served two years as a var- sity yell leader and two years as a re- serve yell leader. This is the second year Janice Gale has led the yells for Sparky's lads. Sparky's future stars turned back such teams as Browns- burg, twice, Westlane, twice, Lawrence Central, Mooresville, and Avon. Overwhelming the 8th graders' of- fense and defense, teams such as Plainfield, Greenwood, Carmel, Beech Grove, Eastwood, Clermont, Bridge- port, and Perry Township subdued the team, marring their record. The cindermen lost the services of IOO yd. dash specialist Ken Smith and 440 yd. and halt-mile relay anchor man Fred Amich. The consistency of Jim Wood to bring home the pole vault blue ribbon will be missed also. Ron Bell and Tom Slater should bring home their share of blue ribbons in the quarter mile this year while also doubling on the mile relay team. Shot putter Bob O'Neal will lead the shot putters this year with his 6' 2 and 200 pound frame. Jim McMahon is counted upon to place well in the mile run while Mike Beck and Jerry King are expected to take honors in the half-mile. This year Bob Templin should, along with Eddie Skeeters, score many points in the high jump for the Sparkplugs' track squad. Bob Templin, Ralph Baker, Bill Williams, Tom Emmick, Lee Clark, and Tom Jones listen intently as Coach Neat discusses this year's scheduled games. Mr. Neat and these members of the varsity nine would like to bring another County Championship home to Speedway. Although the diamond crew lost last yeor's leading pitcher in Jim Woods and one ofthe best hitters in W. K. Lippard, Mr. Neat is count- ing on Bob Templin, Tom Emmick, and Bill Williams to furnish the power at the plate. Sophomore Tom Jones will be a candidate for starting assignments on the mound. -77.
