SHS History-1912 To The Present Although the actual town of Speedway was plotted in 1912, originally the only school was an elementary one operated by Wayne Township. By 1928 the population of Speedway had grown enough to support its own elementary school. 4 ln the fall of 1932 the ninth grade was added and the school was organized as a six-year elementary system and a three-year junior high. The gymnasium unit, with four permanent classrooms and three temporary ones, was completed in June, 1937. When, during the school years 1937-38, the eleventh and twelfth grades were added, Speedway High School became a reality. MAIN ENTRANCE - SPEEDWAY HIGH SCHOOL The first High School Commencement was held May 24, 1938, when six seniors were graduated, three boys and three girls. May 27, 1955, sees the graduation of the l8th class, our class. The shop addition was completed in 1944. On Thursday morning, Febru- ary 24, 1949, SHS students moved into the new high school building, located on 14th Street. During the latter part of the school year 1950-51, the library unit, with its two upper classrooms, was added to our system. As our school progresses, the citizens of Speedway are constantly working to make SHS a better equipped place for students. The spring of 1955 found the music department addition completed, giving students another advan- tage to add to Speedway's present list of assets.
