She was also an honor student. SHS History-1912 To The Present Although the actual town of Speedway was plotted in 1912, originally the only school was an elementary one operated by Wayne Township. By 1928 the population of Speedway had grown enough to support its own elementary school. 4 ln the fall of 1932 the ninth grade was added and the school was organized as a six-year elementary system and a three-year junior high. The gymnasium unit, with four permanent classrooms and three temporary ones, was completed in June, 1937. When, during the school years 1937-38, the eleventh and twelfth grades were added, Speedway High School became a reality. MAIN ENTRANCE - SPEEDWAY HIGH SCHOOL The first High School Commencement was held May 24, 1938, when six seniors were graduated, three boys and three girls. May 27, 1955, sees the graduation of the l8th class, our class. The shop addition was completed in 1944. On Thursday morning, Febru- ary 24, 1949, SHS students moved into the new high school building, located on 14th Street. During the latter part of the school year 1950-51, the library unit, with its two upper classrooms, was added to our system. As our school progresses, the citizens of Speedway are constantly working to make SHS a better equipped place for students. The spring of 1955 found the music department addition completed, giving students another advan- tage to add to Speedway's present list of assets. Superintendent RICHARD C. JORDAN Secretary MRS. The first teachers who had to put up with us were Miss Knetzer and Mrs. Rinehart. The faculty of the grade school consisted of nine teachers and the enrollment was 270. The second year Miss Walter and Miss Lebendorfer started us on the road to learning. We also had to learn to sit still and keep quiet, some of our teachers today say we still have to learn to keep quiet. During the third year our class would iust learn the name of the teacher and she would leave. I guess we were just too much for them. Anyway our first third grade teacher was Mrs. Edwards. We were really going places as we advanced to the fourth grade and the guidance of Mrs. Wagle and Miss Smith. By this time construction had started on the present high school. ln the fifth grade under the supervision of Mrs. Thompson and Miss Ridlen, we were starting to grow up a little. Bob Stewart was on his way up, and we do mean up. As sixth graders, we had more activities and responsibilitiesg being traffic officers really made us big time. Our teachers for the year were Mrs. Kessler and Mr. McClelland. 1951-52, our first year as lower classmen in a large school, our class was increased to 49. Our officers elected were: President-Larry Thomas Vice President-Carolyn Skeeters Secretary--Shirley Vail Treasurer-Dave Crawford As eighth graders, one step closer to high school, we increased our enrollment to 52. The class officers were: President-Sally Fuller Vice President-Bill Short Secretary-Margie Traylor Treasurer--Jim Stumph This year we were to hear that famous saying of one of the faculty, Well, today we will have a small oppor- tunity. We were soon to find out that this same man and saying were to haunt us through the rest of our high school days. So, you 7th graders, beware. At last we were Freshmen! After giving the Seniors a bad time in the process of initiating us, we settled down to a long hard grind of four years of high school. Officers elected for this year were: President-Milford Bennett Vice President-Jack Roach Secretary-Margie Traylor Treasurer-Linda Yentes Under the coaching of Mr. Sallee we compiled a record of four wins and no losses playing football. Our basketball team, under the coaching of Mr. Nay, did well also by com- piling a record of four wins and four losses. This year we had our first class party, a picnic held in Riverside Park. Our class sponsor, whom we won't mention, but his initials As We Saw H I-nsToiuANs JIM STUMPH -- Baseball, Football, Track, Reserve Basketball, Honor Society, Quiz 'Em Team, Intramural, Class Historian TOM FORREST are Mr. Weller, had a great time because he had the food cornered for himself. We finished our first year in high school and went for- ward to more adventures. Our class membership rose to the total of 57. Our class officers for this year were: President-Milford Bennett Vice President-Dale Toole Secretary-Carolyn Skeeters Treasurer-Jim Stumph This was the year that we ordered our class rings. Also we heard a few more sayings, such as You are the laziest class in the school and You bunch of parasites. I have heard we were not the only ones to claim these names. Now upper classmen in our biggest year we elected officers, and for the third straight year Milford Bennett was made President for he was doing a great job. Vice President-Jack Roach Secretary-Carolyn Skeeters Treasurer-Pat Tipps This was the year of our first dramatic production- Cheaper by the Dozen. Next came the best Junior- Dance of them all, Dreamtime. And last but not least came the Junior-Senior Reception, held at Atherton Cen- ter on the Butler Campus. lt was enjoyed by all present, even though there was not enough food for one of the faculty, who we learned later left and went home for dinner. We finally made itg we were Seniors! After making sure the Freshmen were well taken care of by us on the football field, we settled down to finish our last year in Speedway High School. We elected class officers for the last time: President-Al White Vice President-Milford Bennett Secretary-Sally Fuller Treasurer-Pat Tipps One of the strangest things happened this year. Mr. Trosky's chickens happened to lay one hollow egg. How come, Mr. Trosky? This year we gave our final dramatic performance, the play A Connecticut Ya'nkee in King Arthur's Court. The Juniors sponsored one of the best receptions since ours. At the l.U. Medical Center, the band and food were great, right, Mr. Weller? Thanks for a wonderful time, Juniors. Our Senior athletes bowed out with a blaze of glory. lt started with a good showing by the football team with a four win and four loss record. Next came the biggest thrill, winning the Sectional at Danville. Then on top of that the baseball team won the Marion County Baseball Tourney. The track team lost only one scheduled season meet and placed third in the Confer- ence. Our class leaves you with this parting word, Juniors, May your Senior year be as successful and happy as ours, and may you have many 'opportunities' in Government class next year. Good luck! Under the direction of Mr, Dalton Wicker the chorus sang tor the Eastern Star, Lions Club, and the Men's Fellowship of the Christian Church. They also helped the student council with the Christmas program and pro- vided a much enjoyed convo for the student body. Eight members of the chorus participated in the State Choral Festival in October. ln March the entire chorus journeyed to Lawrence Central for the County Choral Festival, Their special number was Thumbelina. Although the operetta, The Bold Front, was presented on the superstitious date of Friday, May 13, it proved to be very successful. Linda Lookabaugh, Ronnie Norman, Dave Morgan, Margaret Parke, Larry Thomas, and Connie Pinkerton did a fine iob on the soloing. This year Mr. Wicker's dreams came true and the band got its new room. This room has three small enclosed practice areas and Mr. Wicker's office on the north side. The hall is also used for the storage of instru- ments, each having an assigned place. This ar- rangement is very nice and a very big improve- ment over the old music room. This year's band officers are: President, Linda Lookabaugh, Vice President, Ronnie Norman, Secretary, Sue Swenson, Treasurer, Larry Thomas. The president and vice president jobs are about the same as they are in any organization, but the secretary has a little different job. She takes attendance. When it comes to finding out if 78 people are here and in the right places, it's a big job. The activities of the band this year have in- cluded some of the things every band does, such as the marching contest at Tech. We came home from there with a first division. ln the concert contest at Franklin in April, the band won a second division. On May 8, the band undertook an extra and played for the light dedication ceremony at the park. 38 Carol Neiman, Jayne Wildman Music PEP BAND FRONT ROW - Marcia Edwards, Annette Jolliff, Sandy Messick, Ann Brockman, Linda Lookabaugh SECOND ROW-Buddy Sprinkles, Carolyn Skeeters, Mari- lyn Winter, Sue Swenson, John Leonard, Larry Moomaw THIRD ROWV- Tom Brady, Linda Price, Charles Gebauer FOURTH ROW - Linda Logston, Mr. Wicker, Martha Hawkins MARCIA EDWARDS First Division in Solo and Ensemble Contest BRASS FIRST-Martha Hawkins, Linda Price, Kay Zink, Beverly Erwin SECOND-Anne Burton, Karen Green, Bill Hanna, Judy Smith, Linda Lookabaugh, Nancy Lewis, John Beyersdorfer THIRDM-Tom Brady, Jerry Siddall, Norman Golder, Tom Riggle, Bill Sanders, Charles Gebauer, Joe Cork, Larry Thomas FOURTH-Fred Amick, Larry Moomaw, John Leon- ard, Dick Emigholz, Glenda Harlin, Annette Jol- liff, Mike Hardin, Jerry Foland www 4 i K s - - A -..r 1 Seniors Judi Smith, Linda Lookabaugh, Carolyn Skeeters, Mar- tha Hawkins, Carol Malaska, Pat Tipps, and Bill Hanna march between the maiorettes as the band plays Alma Mater. They whalloped the Brownsburg Bulldogs, our neighbors out west, 31 to O they came out best. The Plugs were really going-their angel in heaven Watched them beat Lawrence 13 to 7. Then came their stopper in black and gold, Warren Central, 33 to l4, they could not hold. Out to Beech Grove was their next hop, 20 to 6 the Hornets came out on top. They traveled to Plainfield to beat the Quaker team, But Plainfield was best with 19 to 14. And then came the final! 33 to 13 the scoreboard read, When they finished Pike Township and came out ahead. So congrats to the team, Coaches Johnson and Clark, The Plugs this year really had lots of spark! He was an average guy, and liked basketball very much. After high school came college days at Central Normal College iDan- villel and Purdue. Then World War ll broke out and Mr. Sallee was drafted into the army. He served in ltaly, French Morocco, Austria and other European countries. After four years in the army he came home to resume where he left off-teaching. He came to Speedway High School in 1945. He teaches Economics, Health and Safety, 7th grade geography and Driver's Training. His new job this year was coaching the 'Plugs basketball team. With this came the title Coach Sallee. Coach Sallee led our boys through the season with 12 wins. Now, Coach Sallee has been named County Coach for the Year! It is a big honor and Speedway is glad to have you- Coach Clyde Sallee! Speedway opened up the season with a great defeat As the Plugs topped the Flashes, ever so neat. Next came Brownsburg from a little ways west, This time ole Sparky was not at his best. Plainfield, in the final seconds, did something to that ball, Just two points-and we sure did fall. Pike Twp. was next in line, Plugs won again l65 to 48l-mighty fine!! Speedway outplayed Mooresville 64 to 57. Boy, this seemed like heaven! Danville just didn't jive that certain night Because we came thru with all our might. On New Year's Day-at the Holiday Tourney- Mooresville won-Sparky didn't like the journey. 54-44 that was the score, As the Plugs beat the Hornets--could you ask for more? Warren Central was supposed to be real tough, But as the Plugs won 55-48 we really showed our stuff. Then to the County we did fly, But with the second game we kissed the title goodbye. Next came Lawrence from a little east, As we beat them 1 point, they called us a beast. Then with Washington it happened to us, 63 to 53-whoops, did you cuss!! With Ben Davis we were still not best As we lost 62-59-oh, but we didn't rest. As a newcomer-Zionsville-we did beat, 64 to 50-now we were on our feet! Speedway topped Decatur with little ado: We added another win, 68-52 Then at the close of the regular season, S. H. S. ran-over Greenwood with much reason. Hurrah for the sectionals! They were really swell! Wearing derbies and sweaters, did we ever yell! And last to the fieldhouse to meet the Anderson five. Defeated we were 47-43 as the Indians came alive. Things just seemed to be going Speedway's way when Bob started getting hot. In the semi-final session, Sat- urday afternoon, against Brownsburg, Bob scored 28 points and again Speedway came out on top, ready and eager to meet Plainfield in the championship game. The next meet with Mooresville proved even easier, the Plugs com- ing out ahead, this time a 75 to 34 win. The Beech Grove Hornets, who came to cinderland next, proved a little better competition, but the Hornets just did not have the sting, for the Sparkplugs won, 67 to 42. The thinly clads from Brownsburg invaded Speedway to give the Plugs a battle, but the battle was short- lived as the boys from the Bulldog school went T R A C K back to the west with a 8026 to 28V3 loss to the Plugs, who now had won four in a row. Next in line was the Annual Marion County Tourney and the Mid-State Conference Track meets. Speedway did well, placing fourth in both meets. Freddie Amich stole the hearts of the fans by winning the 215-yard dash, and by this he set a Conference record of :22.4, for- merly owned by Dick Burrows of Danville. They lost to Plainfield, 5 to 43 Shortridge, 4 to 2, Danville, 8 to 71 Decatur Central, 7 to 5, and Ben Davis, 2 to O. The Plugs never lost by more than two runs, but they won by an average of 9.8 runs per game. For the 1955 season, the baseball team had five returning senior lettermen. Pitching and playing infield was Jack Roach, who won two of the six games, catching, Jim Stumph, and in the outfield, Jon Yoho, Larry Thomas, and Tom Wilson. For the season Jack Roach won three games, Jon Everhart two games, and Jim Wood one. The real hero of the season was utility catch- er, Joel Barksdale, who batted for Fred Amich, the right fielder. The score stood 2 to 1 in favor of the Plugs and in the bottom of the sixth in- ning, with bases loaded, the team realized it was now or never to get a comfortable lead and end the rapidly building pressure. Joel hit a triple over the left fielder's head on the third pitch to drive in three more runs, making it 5 to O. The Plugs shut out the opponents in the seventh one, two, three, with two strike outs by Pitcher Jack Roach and a beautiful line drive catch by Jim Wood, the shortstop, making the Plugs the 1955 County Champions. Now it is one of the largest extra-curricular clubs in Speedway High School. The girls were busy this year participating in the Giant Volley Ball and Basketball Tourneys. Although there are only Junior and Senior girls in GAA, girls in all four classes participate in the tourneys. The Seniors proved victorious in both of the tourneys this year. ln volley ball the score was 6-3 over the Sophomores, and in basketball 29-l6 over the Juniors. The proceeds from the Giant Volley Ball Tourney assisted the Hi-Y in their Clothe-a-Child Project at Christmas. Each year minor and major awards are given to girls who have attended business meetings, recreation meet- ings, and helped or participated in the tourneys for a certain amount of hours. For a minor award, a seven- inch gold letter S, a girl must have 18 hours, and for a major award, a pin, she must have 36 hours. This year 24 out of 52 girls received awards. Miss Greer, sponsor, was aided by the following officers: President, Marilyn Mead: Vice President, Sally Fuller, Secretary, Marilyn Winter, Treasurer, Maryellen Fogarty, and Council Representative, Sandy Mead. Mrs. Hine's first in command this year was Linda Price, Sally Fuller second, with Carol Fidler and Maryellen Fogarty acting as treasurer and secretary respectively. At our meetings we had speakers talk to us about appearance, telephone voice, and other interesting things a girl going into the business field should know. This year the F. B. L. A. went to Zionsville and helped organize a new F. B. L. A. chapter They also went to Pike to tell their newly-formed chapter about profitable money-making projects One of the projects the F. B. L. A. undertook was the selling of sweatshirts with our own school's Sparkie on them. Sally Fuller provided the design. Selling salt water taffy is a year round project for the girls. All of this work selling things was done in order that F. B. L. A. could give its annual athletic dance to honor those boys who participated in football, basketball, baseball, and track. At this dance the Athletic King and Queen are crowned. This year they were selected by all who came to the dance. They also give awards for typing and shorthand. These are 30, 40, and 50 word certificates and pins for typing and 50, 60, and 70 word certificates and pins for short- hand. The big convention when all F. B. L. ' PUW HAMA O In dramatic and fascinating fashion, the POWERAMA tells the story of pioneering and progress in POWER. It's a permanent exhibit exemplifying ALLISON products against their background of advanced engineering and good manufacturing methods. Technical? Yes, to a degree, but presented in such an interesting manner that school children can understand and enjoy it. For instance . . . You'll see a model test stand where a miniature turbo-prop engine and Aeroproducts propeller are put through simulated tests. Or, you can push a lever and start a model jet plane on its flight and see how much fuel is required for take-off and flight. Or, you can sit in a bucket seat and actually put a big General Patton tank through its paces on a giant-sized turntable. There are lots of other moving and talking displays . . . displays like the working model of a portion of the Allison bearing plant-the world's only fully automatic steel-backed bronze bearing foundry. These few highlights give you an idea of the scope of the POWERAMA. Officers or program chairmen of clubs, organizations and societies, and adults in charge of children's groups may schedule visits to the POWERAMA.
