D B A ' A debaters: Wayne Wendel, Ronnie Riggs, LaVon Cundy, Morris Mikkelsen Debaters to State Resolved: That the United States foreign aid should be substantially increased. The six debate teams under the direction of Mrs. Virginia Warvi debated this topic with the other towns of the Black Hills Conference and at the BHTC Tournament. After winning the regional contest the A squad went on to the state contest in Huron. In addition to debate the group par- ticipated in extemporaneous speaking, original oratory, radio speaking and discussion. D E C L A M A T I N Gay McVey and Mary Craig brought new honor to SHS by winning two super- ior ratings at the state declam contest. The Sleep Walking Scene from Mac- beth, a dramatic reading, and the poem Enoch Arden were the winning selec- tions for Gay and Mary. Mary Craig, poetry, David Whit- lock, humorous, Morris Mikkelsen, oratory, and Gay McVey, dramatic; the four local declam contest win- ners won the District Declam Con- test Trophy. David, Mary, and Gay won the right to enter the reg- ional contest where Gay and Mary again placed first. Pictured below are the local con- testants.
