■■• ' --TTr i ' MMit SHS Sends Group to Student Congress The Black Hills Student Congress is held annually at Lead, South Dakota. It is a mock legislative body patterned after the United States Congress. The senators and representatives are high school students selected from Northern Black Hills towns. Those attending from SHS in 1956, shovm above, were, seated: Karen Crowner, Lynn McCain LaVon Cundy, and Gay McVey; standing: Ronnie Riggs, John Kinyon, Tom Campbell, Morris Mikkelsen, and Wayne Wendel. Campbell was elected vice-president of the Senate. Local Declamation Winners Compete At District Gay McVey, in the dramatic division, Harriet Far- rell in humorous, Ruth Zitting, poetry, and Morris Mik- kelsen, oratory, were members of the declamation squad who competed at the district meet. They won the right to attend the district by winning the local meet. —21—

The A debate squad, shown above with debate coach Clarence Brammer, consists of Jim McCleave and Karen Crowner, affirmative, seated; and Bill McGuigan and John Kinyon, negative, standing. This year ' s A debate squad captured first place at the Black Hills Teachers College Invitational Tournament, and ended third in over-all stand- ings for the year in the Northern Hills Speech Conference. Debate Squad Wins Trophy in BHTC Invitational The C debate squad is made up of debaters in the ninth and tenth grades. Like the B debaters their wins do not count for points in most NHC tournaments. They are Roberta McGregor and Sarah Roberts, affirmative, seated; and Wayne Jeffery and Jack Betis, negative, stand- ing. The B debate squad is composed of those high school debaters who are not on the A squad. They are Mary Kinyon and Morris Mikkelsen, affirmative, seated; and Wayne Wendel and Ronny Riggs, negative, standing.
