1951 District 3Z Winners TOP ROW: Coach Don Allan, Allen Jonas, Donley Harris, Roger Allan, Captain Bill Leeper. Kenneth Burnham, Manager Larry Portwood. FIRST ROW: Nolan Christy, Don Ward, Stanley Hollis, Jim Nelson Dick Christof- ferson, Bob Nelson. Everett Ashley. A 42 to 36 win over Deadwood in the finals of the District 32 tournament climaxed the l95O-'51 basketball season for the Spartans. Deadwood's Bears had previously dumped the Spartans twice in conference play. Spearfish took titth in the Black Hills Conference with a record of five wins aqainst nine losses. After winning the District, the Spartans went on to the Region 8 play where they dropped a hard fought 43 to 46 tilt to Kadoka. Spearfish, however, took the consolation championship from Hot Springs in an overtime, 49 to 45, thus endinq an ll win, ll loss season. Top scorer for the Spartans was Don Ward, senior forward, with 264 points. Next was lanky forward Kenneth Burnham with 190 points. ,24-
