Spaulding, Spaulding High School was the result of a gift of over half the cost from former Governor and Mrs. Huntley N. Spaulding, former Governor and Mrs. Holland H. Spaulding, Mrs. Marion Spaulding Potter, and Mrs. Leon C. Spaulding, a grant from the Public Works Administration, and an appropriation from the City of Rochester. It was dedicated on September 9, 1939. We still think that Spaulding's appearance surpasses that of newer schools. When first constructed, Spaulding was considered one of the finest schools in the East. Such modern facilities as the projection room, the shops, and the home economics equipment drew many visitors. Sev- eral years ago a foreign language laboratory was in- stalled. Curriculum changes have matched the changing times. During the war there were courses in aeronautics and machine industries. Later, growing interest in industry caused the agricultural course to be dropped. New courses include Specch, Appreciation of the Arts, Electricity, German, and Physical Science. In April of 1963, Spaulding was evaluated and approved by a New England accrediting association. There are now twcnty-one peoplc enrolled in Spaulding's night school, the first credit-granting night school in Maine, New Hampshire, or Vermont. Rochester citizens as well as students have been faith- ful fans of Spaulding's athletic teams. During the 1956 and 1957 seasons, the football team won the Division 8 2 championship, the 1964- basketball team, second in the state, was invited to play in the New England tour- nament in Boston, and the baseball team won the 1958 Class L championship. Spaulding has also had good golf, tennis, and hockey teams. Various clubs have come and gone with changing interests and needs. There has always been a Red and White magazine, but the first yearbook was not pub- lished until 194-7. The Torch Club has been replaced by today's Key Club. The Camera Club and the Taste and Baste Club no longer exist. Other organizations have flourished, notably Masque and Dagger which won the New Hampshire Drama Festival in 1947, 1948, and 1961. Band and Chorus, once extracurricular ac- tivities, now meet during school and offer TIA: credit per year. Spaulding has indeed undergone many changes, and the main factor in these changes has been' growth. One concept, however, has remained as enduring as New Hampshire granite. This concept is exemplified by these words of Daniel Webster, inscribed on the dedication plaque in our foyer: If we work upon marble, it will perish. If we work upon brass, time will efface it. If we rear temples, they will crumble to dust. But if we work upon men's immortal minds, if we imbue them with high principles, with the just fear of God and love of their fellow men, we engrave on those tablets something which no time can efface, and which will brighten and brighten to all eternity.
