THE RED AND WHITE had he not been pun1shed and had been fi ee he would have asked to be punished for he Sald he knew he had done a wrong and should be punished H1s letters from the home were ln teresting telling of h1S daily l1fe and of the other boy s there He even said he was beglnnlng to enioy belng there H1s parents were allowed to y1s1t him Weekly and found lnste 1d of a bu1ld 1ng with bars alound it as they had expected to find a beautlful brick bulldmg Wlth fields for outdooi spoi ts pool tables glme looms and beautl ful llylng and bedl ooms The boy s had one houl of dally work th It they had to do and aftel th1s they mlght do LS they wlshed eyccept bleak any of the set rules Their matron was beautiful pleaslng and so un delstandmg that one would belleye he had known her a l1fe t1me She understood boys and very seldom had to punlsh the boys placed under her would do nothing that would hult he1 ln any way Aftel six months we1e up Jo and the other boy we1e allowed to go home and home to them seemed like heay en Duung these src months Jo s mother had grown older and her halr was gray but she wanted to for get those terrlble months and wanted to help Jo forget them She had al ways bCl16V6d that if her ch1ld1en were ey er hurt 01 1n t10l1ble that she was the one to blame md that she was belng punished for her sms She told the members of the famlly that thls subiect was ney er to be mentloned to Jo and that he wasn t to be treated any differently than he had been be fore thls had happened Jo benefited from his experlence and he often sa1d that perhaps it would have been better for the other boys involved lf they too had been punished rather than to have got awav w1th such a punishable crlme Jo has many friends today and I dont bel1eve any boy can leach his standard of honesty and rel1ab1l1ty How do I know so much about Jo s case? Well vou see Jos mother IS my mother and Jo IS my youngel brother and I wouldn t exchange him for another no matter what he has done 1n the past Jo learned h1S lesson the hard way but I belleye It to be the best Way He has found that we are all pun1shed for our wrongs and iewarded for ou1 good deeds This episode m Jo s l1fe affected h1S whole family and has left a scar on each of them that cm never be erased But we all thank God that he le uned that Crlme does not pay before lt was too late I bel1eve every one has good polnts as well as bad and should be given a chance to show wh xt they can do wlth some help Yet how many of us glV6 a person a chance to show h1s good points?
