DANDELION FEATHERS As I open the window, I hear the droning, demanding miaou Which always seems to Require my immediate attention. Nikki sits on the walkway Near the porch door. The miaou ceases When he notices my presence. Beneath shining topaz eyes, His jaws are clamped Around a limp bird, Its neck twisted Toward unfolded wings. A dandelion feather Floats to the ground Amid tawny down. I want to ask Why, Nicholas? Why a bird? But he doesn't know. He doesn't get pleasure from it It's inborn necessity. And I remember that Birds can fly And cats don't have guns.
