Morris The final record of the '80 soccer season for the varsity is a misleading indicator at best, 6 wins, 7 losses. The record belies the fact of the team's high work rate, com- petitiveness, consistent match performance, skilled play, teamwork, exhuberant spirit, and good sportsmanship. The Crimson Tide averaged twenty-five shots on goal per-game, outscored our opponents 31 to 13 on overall goals — indeed an impressive season statistic in any league. Injuries, luck, and destiny played as important factors in demanding this year's outcome — right team. Selected for outstanding play within Division-Five were Franco Rossi and Marco Parent, our co-captains. Bill Dudley, Jeff Dunn, and Bruno Lacroix received hon- orable mention. Marco Parent, our top scorer, was picked for the All-State Class L soccer team. Congratulations, seniors. Don't forget the nice events and highlights of the sea- son: the practice sessions with our new kickboard the senior-junior heading contests the concession stand and occasional disappearance of some of the goodies . the excellent team effort against Northfield in our first game and the continuing momentum during the sea- son with wins over Harwood, Randolph, and Oxbow Billy Dudley's powerful booting Jeff Dunn's solid play in the fullback position our close losses to U-32, Harwood, Oxbow and Willimastown our homecom- ing night prior to the very intense game against William- stown the cake made by the cheerleaders David Fish's speed when we needed it and his superb man-to- man play Jimmy Coming's capable play as fullback Franco Rossi's stalwart performance as goalkeeper and constant inspiration on the field Marco Parent's strong all-around courage and leadership during the en- tire season Bruno Lacroix's cool skill at midfield Ricky Quinlan's quickness on the front line our ex- plosive play against Oxbow both times the impress- ive deeds of the juniors Paul Bigg's aggressive defen- sive movements and powerful kicks John Perreault's acting ability and fine crosses from the left wing position Pete Kelty's heading ability and short passing game Geoff Haskell's valuable play, versatility, and super- critical saves in crucial games Nurse Monti's help throughout the entire season along with the helpers at our home games, especially Tami Binaghi and Janet Bassett Walter Whaples successful game against Wil- liamstown the contributions made by the senior new- comers to soccer, Scott Fitts, Layne Gregoire, and Arthur Shannon along with the competitive desire of juniors Peter Baldor, Randy Tucker, and speedster Bradley White Danny Martin's fine work as goalkeeper Christian Parent's mental toughness and endurance as a defensive player our successful pep rally our tournament game with North Country the singing competition on the bus with the girls the sweater raffle sale the special help from all the parents and the banquet Committee and the supper finale at the Canadian Club and our loyal supporters Kathy Lanpher's help as scorekeeper Danny Wilbur's able assistance as timekeeper all contributed to another great season. The team will have a bright future in its returning juniors and seasoned junior varsity players. To you de- parting seniors — good luck to you. The team will miss you. What looked on paper to be a good team met with hardship and mistakes in the first three games which proved costly as the Tide dropped all three games. The Tide, even with its dismal record, still had a chance at the Northern Title. The Tide men won the next three of four games, which made the record 3-4. The last two games against South Burlington, and Montpelier proved to be too much as Spaulding dropped them both. However, there were some bright spots. Through most of the season the Tide had the 1 running game in tne division. Todd Martel led the league in rushing for six games, finishing third in the league. Al Monty's and Fran Patno's presence on the Tide's 1980 team helped shore up the Tide's depth and kept oppsoing coaches worried with their defensive plav. . The Junior Varsity (Crimson Ripple) raced to a quick start this year, behind the running of Sophomore Jason Parry. Jason ripped off 600 yards rushing and 8 touchdowns in the Tide's first four games as the ripple won three and lost four. Losing Jason with a broken arm and three key players on defense to the Varsity proved to be too much as the J.V.'s failed to win another game all season. There is promise for next year's team, as the Crimson Ripple proved this year. Special thanks go to our scorekeepers; Laura Galli, Denise Goulet, and Lori Bowles, and our photographers; John Mackenzie, Brian Elmer, and Chris Roy. The 1980 Freshman Football season was very successful. Only five games were scheduled for the season but this did not damper the enthusiasm of the team. After beating Essex 20-8 in the opener, the team had to wait two weeks before beating St. Johnsburv, 20-12. To add to the team's distress, the game against Burlington was cancelled, leaving just two games to play. The game against South Burlington was the biggest thrill of the year. Trailing 20-8 midway through the second period, the Freshman squad roared back to take an impressive win 32-20 over a previously undefeated Rebel team. The season finale with traditional rival Montpelier proved one-sided, the Tide rolling to the tune of 44-0. Even though shortened by adversity, the undefeated season was a thrill for palyers, coaches, parents, and friends. Congratulations! 49 VARSITY SCOREBOARD TEAM OPP. The FBLA club, under the direction of Business Department Chairman David St. Cyr, had 25 members during the 1980-81 school year. Some of these members went to the Vermont State Leadership Confer- ence in White River in April. Plans are also being made by a group of SHS members to attend the July National Leadership Con- ference to be held in Chicago, Illinois. The FBLA club held an arts and crafts show on December 6 as one of several fund-raising activities during the year. The show raised $500. The various fund- raising activities held by FBLA were very profitable. The Spaulding FBLA club is part of the Vermont and National Future Business Leaders of America organization. The FBLA members must pay dues of $6.00 which also helps the state and national organization. FBLA Kneeling: Janet Basset, Lisa Maurais, Tim Grenon, Scott Brimblecombe, Ken Sheldon. Two of our wrestlers, Dale Smith and co-captain, Steve Bullard, used the experi- ence to obtain respectable positions in the state. Steve finished second in the state and lost to only one person in this state. Dale, finishing third in the state, was able to beat a New England champ from Vergennes. Being able to put together a team of light-weight and inexperienced wrestlers was a hard job for Coaches Welch and Anderson. They were able to do this with their dedication and that of the wrestlers. Next year, I hope that they will be able to put a strong team together and bring the state title back to SHS. Congratulations to Dale, Steve, and the team for their accomplishments and good luck to the team and coaches next year. Back Row: Sylvain Metievier, Alan Edson, Craig Croteau, Mike McGinley, Coach Anderson. Front Row: Butch Hutchinson, Wayne Shutack, David Williams, and )ohn Cordon. Being low in numbers, we had few JV wrestlers this year. Of these few, four were entered in the Eastern JV State Tour- ney held here at SHS. Two of these wrestlers were able to capture the cham- pionship in their weight classes. They were Craige Croteau and Wayne Shutak. They went on to the state championship, held on the first day of the Varsity States, but ended runners up. Next year they should be very good on the varsity level. This year the Girl's Basketball team shared many memorable times, on and off the court. Who will ever forget . .. the extremely DEEP conversations that Sharon and Lisa had, on some very WIDE subjects? Lvnn's fabulous card tricks at BHS? And the nick names: Puppy, Birdie, Twink, Fats, Ging, Michelle (who?), Kay-Bell, Batch, Tuna, and we were all women at one time or another. Lynn, watch out for that invisible man you're guarding! What's the speciality for the day Micky? The Tide has Bowdine! There are also the basketball games that won't be forgotten. A thriller at Essex |ct. and an emotionally good win against CY'U. These are onlv two out of nineteen. Although we lost our first tournament game at Mississquoi, we finished with 12 wins and 6 losses — the best girl's record in several years. The starting line-up, consisting of seniors Sharon Farr, jane Funk, Lisa Currier, Lynn Currier, and sophomore Kay Gregoire, were pleased to receive honorable mention to the state's All-Star Team, a great accomplishment. The seniors want to wish next year's team the best of luck! Remember ... celebrate good times, c'mon!! My editors at the Washington Post had given me a deadline and I needed an inspiration — fast. As I impatiently braked for a light, I saw a suspicious-looking character sporting a three-piece suit and a briefcase cross the street in front of me. I looked more closely and recognized the valedictorian of my high school class, Justin Perreault. He was the first fellow sufferer from high school that I had seen since graduation. Suddenly, an inspiration hit me. I had my story: What happened to the Class of 1981? JULY 4, 2001: I managed to track lustin down today. He's doing, uh . . . quite well (condo in Palm Beach, the whole bit). He works for a think tank which pays him to think ... something he does rather easily, if I remember correctly. |ULY 6, 2001: Good News! I ran into Micheline Monty today at an IBM convention. She was not only at it, she was chairperson of it. Seems that she is the vice-president of IBM. Funny, but I always pictured her as the domestic type. Some people have all the luck. JULY 9, 2001: By pure chance I happened to run into Al Monty today. He runs a gourmet food restaurant called All You Can Eat , and he moonlights as a stand-up comedian. He wrote a bestseller last year called One Thousand and One Gross lokes. I always knew he'd make a big splash in the entertainment world. JULY 12, 2001: Classmates and more classmates. Check out these careers: Margie Blake is presently the principal of Spaulding High School. Cheryl Cattelona coordinates parties and other events for local communes. Jeff Dunn is Steve Martin's new protege, a big success on the updated version of Laugh-In . Todd Martell is a teacher of sign language in an accredited school for the deaf. Scott Fitts chases criminals in the crime-ridden streets of Los Angeles. And the List goes on: Julie Tidd has executive power over the United States of America, only second to our president. Chuck Williams. Judy Moral has just released her new spring line. It is featured in this month's issue of Glamour . Arthur Corriveau's newest play is another smash-hit on Broadway. The Loud Clown stars another classmate of ours, Martha Rackliff. Ashley Talmadge has another Triple Crown winner. Ashley, a well known successor and perpetrator of Monty Python's FlyingCircus , has raised this horse, Eric, since his birth. Lori Lafreniere leads the entire state of Texas in pep rallies over a privately 154 sponsored television station before a Cowboy game. Franco Rossi overcame his knee injury in High Sc hool and has gone on to be a star fullback for the New York Cosmos. He married his High School sweetheart, Brett Martin. She is now the proprietor and master chef of her own Italian restaurant. Tim Jenness has aspired to managing editorship of the CBS Evening News. He's not the on-camera person, though — this job belongs to Lori Booth. Scott Brimblecomb has just completed, unsuccessfully, his presidential campaign. He has retired to the lecture circuit and his presidency of Goddard College in Northfield. |ohn Mackenzie has just designed the layout of the nation's new Capital at Corn Blight, Nebraska. Returning from the site, |ohn said Duh, no more crows . .. please, the corn is too much!! . He later drank the vat capacity of the Genesee brewery in Rochester, New York. Which, I should mention, is under the direction of Paul Jean, master brewer. Charlie Palmisano has updated his father's tomato packing plant to handle a contract for dehydrated granite slabs in cans, which has saved Francis Brooks' Rock of Ages Corporation millions of dollars in shipping. Bruno LaCroix recently returned from Innsbruck, Austria, where he coached the sixth consecutive U.S. gold medal hockey team. Bruno has played on these teams from 1984 to 1996, and has stayed as coach. Maryanne Harding was arrested for an attempt at the President's life at a cocktail party at Booty's in Georgetown. She was pardoned. Gary Champy succeeded Charlie Waters in the Dallas defensive backfield, and last year entered the Hall of Fame at Canton. Steve Setien, commissioner of the new Professional Sports Leagues Guild, officiated at the initiation. Steve Nelson has supplanted Richard Leaky as most popular archeologist in a recent poll by People magazine, editor Penny Hamilton reports. Todd MacDuff is back from the asteroid belt, where he equipped and trained legions of viral organisms in the basic infantry tactics. Todd is now building and designing models of a proposed space station around Uranus. In his spare time he makes napal at home for a local right wing group. JULY 14,2001: Well, my editors loved the story. All of this research just goes to show that the world is a better place since the Class of '81 became a part of it. Now I need to find a new idea for a story. Maybe I'll go visit Barbara Walters in the Home for Aged Reporters and try to prove the theory that old journalists never die, they just fail to give back their typewriters!! by, Lori Booth Chuck Williams Brett Martin Art Corriveau 155 CLASS WILL We, the illustrious Class of 1981, whose world-shaking ac complishments, unsurpassed spirit, and renowned scholastic achievements unquestionably make us the most distinguished class to ever graduate from Spaulding High, do leave this our Last Will and Testament.
