That was Spaulding's attitude during the fall sports season. Our soccer team nearly made the playoffs, and our tough-luck field hockey squad provided us with many exciting games. For the first time in seven years, our football team had a winning record, and don't think the Barre fans didn't appreciate it. The biggest crowd in memory turned out for the final showdown with Montpelier and witnessed one of the most thrilling games in Spaulding's history. The Fall Athletic Banquet was held November 7 at the Elks Club. A crowd of 400 honored the teams and feasted on a ham dinner prepared by the Culinary Arts class. The autumn play was filled with many exciting moments, as nine games were decided by a single goal. The '77 squad just missed earning a tournament berth, remember team? Bruno Rossi, Todd Langley, Russell Fraser, Henry Rackliff, Michael Miller, and Scott Fitzgerald, the Tide's senior defensemen, helped us win the squeakers with their combined alertness, powerful booting, outstanding hustle, and aggressive play. Senior offensive booters, who made our victories possible, were Marcel Chouinard, Ricky Bolduc, Donald and Brian McMahon, and lastly the ''header Roger Marchini. Over the second half of the season, rainy days, injuries, road trips and pressure plays, contributed to the team coming down the stretch losing four out of five overtime games. Remember that last Harwood match? These young men deserve a round of applause for their fine soccer ability and sportsmanship. Particularly worthy of notice are the fifteen departing seniors who put in four years of their best play for Spaulding. Good luck boys, the team will miss you! Congratulations on a fine season, team. Best wishes to all of you who participated. The beginning of field hockey practice in mid-August reminded us that school was rapidly approaching. We changed our home field from Bailey to the Auditorium. Many girls came out, and for the first time, we had an official JV team under the supervision of Mr. Tim Cope. He, like most of the JVs, was a rookie himself, but he had great enthusiasm and spirit, was eager to learn, and did so quickly. (His spirit was at its peak after every goal!) The final decision on both teams was made before school started. We had the ingredients (a mixture of talent, enthusiasm, and determination) to have a great season. We chose our captains—Seniors Mary Ambro- sini and Karen Hart. Other seniors participating were Mary Czok, Stephanie Martin, and a member of our walking wounded, Katie Free. Who will ever forget MG's favorite remarks in practice?— Walk, jog, sprint . . . don't cut those corners, and the ever famous, Your mother could do better than that! Our first two games of the year were with Montpelier and Stowe. We came out with a tie and a loss, determined to improve. As the team boarded Sammy's bomb for the first away game, the seniors felt a twinge when they noticed no one was sitting behind them. They soon became used to the luxury, though, and quickly learned not to take an end seat on the way home and get stuck cleaning out the bus. The freshmen were full of anticipation of what it was like on the bus —or maybe of what might happen to them. They didn't do very well on Glory to Spaulding at first, but once they got started, nothing could stop them! It also became a custom for MG and Mr. Cope to visit the back of the bus. We found that coaches like to munch out, too! Favorites were Rhonda's Snickers, Kelly's popcorn, and Spider's Nachos. We posted our first win against Northfield, 3-2. It was then that Lynn was again plagued by her problem of feeling the flu coming on. Throughout the season, the weather wasn't on our side. We sometimes had practice in the gym and other times practiced outside despite the elements. Cheryl's legs became more colorful every day! We found that field hockey is filled with fun experiences such as getting a stick around the ankle and meeting the dirt face to face. We had great times this year . . . Mr. Cope taught us how to spell relief at Northfield . . . Robin has potential with Donald Duck and Tickle (with help from Melissa). Ambro and Kelly, what did you bring back from Oxbow? Tammy and Mary really tried to catch up with Robin's nose, but failed ... Thanks to Spider for her Martian and Elvis and to Stoney for Underdog . . . Shelly, why were you really chasing Mr. Cope? All in all, it was a good year. Goodbye and good luck to Ambro, Spider, Steph, Mary, and Katie (the seniors). Thanks a lot MG and Mr. Cope. 60 Kelly and Spider working for a goal Ambro —our artistic goalie VARSITY SCOREBOARD Spaulding 0 Montpelier Opponent 0 2 Stowe 3 3 Northfield 1 1 Harwood 2 2 Randolph 2 2 Oxbow 3 0 U-32 0 4 Montpelier 1 0 Stowe 2 0 Northfield 0 1 Harwood 2 1 Randolph 0 0 Oxbow 1 0 U-32 1 Half-time pep talk Cheryl puts everything into it JUNIOR VARSITY Front Row: Sara Moeykens, Robin Heath, Gail Ouellette, Karen Barberi, Judy Morale, Ellen Tofani, Ann Lorenzini Terry Setien Middle Row:Maryanne Harding, Sandy Olsen, Cindy Moeykens, Chris Perreault, Shaun Rugo, Carolyn Pelkey, Jennifer Sherman, Sue Alexander. On a hot August afternoon, the 1977 Spaulding High Football team began preparation for another season. We had the smallest turn-out that Coach Joe Maiola had ever seen in all his coaching days at Spaulding. Because of this, the coaching staff was apprehensive about the upcoming season. The team decided that only hard work and dedication would produce a winning season. This is what we set out to do. After our opening win over St. Johnsbury, it became evident that our team was going to be more than just competitive. From that point on, we gained great confidence in ourselves. More importantly, the school gained confidence in us, also. Our toughest game of the year was in our meeting with Burlington. This win had a very big psychological effect on us—it really brought our whole team closer together. Spaulding suffered its first defeat at the hands of South Burlington. Even though they beat us physically, our minds were still geared to win. We proved this the following week when we defeated North Country in a game marked with controversy between the coaches and referees. After this game, the team travelled on to B.F.A.where we met our second defeat. The team regained its winning ways in the game against Lyndon. There we showed that we could come back and win a key game. Also, this win guaranteed the first winning season for Spaulding Football in six years. Another big victory came in our game against Essex, as we proved that we could stand up against the best of the Division I teams in Vermont. One of the most dramatic games that Spaulding has ever experienced came on November 5 against our arch-rivals, the Montpelier Solons. This was the season finale, the game that the entire squad will never forget. The thrill-filled contest marked the season as something special and important. The team would like to thank the coaching staff for their great supervision and inspiration. We, especially the seniors, really owe you a lot. We would like to thank our teammates for giving all you could give, all season long. It was you guys who made all the work and effort worth the while. We would like to thank the cheerleaders for a great job in following and supporting us wherever we went. Lastly, we would likfe to give special thanks to our fans. Vour support and enthusiasm for us all through the season gave us an extra incentive to work harder. —Good luck to next year's Spaulding teams! Tim Couture and Brent Potvin, Co-Captains 1st row; J. Our '77 Homecoming got off to a drizzly start on Friday night, October 1. Rain could not dampen the psyched up Spaulding spirit, though, as students, coaches, and players rallied around a bonfire yelling and cheering. Then, Homecoming Queen Lynn McNally and her court, Wendy Laitenen, Sue Messier, and Michele Perreault, led a rowdy parade down Main Street. The following morning brought more bad weather which forced a cancellation of the soccer game. By the time the chicken barbeque started, it had cleared up a bit, and hungry fans enjoyed a pregame lunch cooked outside. Spaulding supporters could be recognized by the bumperstickers on their cars and the buttons on their jackets that were being sold by various clubs. The football team, previously undefeated, suffered its first loss at the hands of South Burlington. The rains set in again, reflecting the mood of the afternoon. Things livened up later on as the freshmen were formally initiated into Spaulding at the Freshmen Reception, then joined the rest of the school in boogying to the sound of Fox in the gym. Even though we weren't successful on the athletic field, Homecoming provided a good time to those who participated. Debbi Munro presents the flag of New Zealand to Mayor Fisher The Tide offense lines up against South Burlington Wendy Laitenen, Michele Perreault, Queen Lynn McNally, Susan Messier About 500 people watched Sunday's game. It is not really similar to German female boxing but when someone heard that a girl's shirt was torn off during a practice, the attendance increased. Are the girls enthusiastic about the game? Very. The girls on the sidelines jump up and down on every play and constantly cheer and scream. After one touchdown, two girls hugged each other and rolled on the ground at midfield. But it's not really similar to German female boxing. Do the girls ever get angry at each other? During the game some girls do get over enthusiastic, but it is all forgotten afterwards. In fact, this year a senior gave a junior a soft drink following the game. Unfortunately the senior didn't let go of the bottle. Can you describe how this year's game went? The seniors were confident of victory. They thought they were bigger. The roster listed most of them as standing over six feet and weighing more than 200 pounds each. However the juniors looked at the senior girls and doubted the figures. The seniors received the opening kickoff but fumbled on the first play from scrimmage and an ominous chatter spread down the sidelines like a rumor. The juniors couldn't move the ball and punted. The seniors couldn't move the ball and gave it up on downs. Oh good, I like playing defense better anyway, cheered a senior. In good field position the junior offense stalled. Then on a fourth and five Laura Cattelona broke around the right end for a long gain to set up the first touchdown. Mary Jean (Chuck) Harris followed a few plays later with a broken play bootleg to score as the first quarter ended. The seniors moved the ball in the second quarter and Lisa Laliberte scored on a nifty run to the left. Her team converted for two points to take the lead at the half. The coaches herded their teams into huddles at far ends of the field for a halftime talk. But the players protested, I want to get some hot chocolate, let's go down to Dunkin Donuts. We'll be back in time. They can't start without us. In the second half junior quarterback Harris alternated with Lori Bigras. They combined with fast-foot Cattelona to pick up big yardage. Harris crossed for paydirt and Nancy Cyr ran the conversion to give the Juniors a 14-8 lead. It was at this point that two junior girls hugged and rolled together at midfield. Cyr stopped a late senior drive with an interception to give her team possession at the senior's 40-yard line. Cattelona then sprinted around left end for the distance to give the junior girls a 20-8 victory. The juniors danced and the seniors cried, yet everyone wanted to know where the party was going to be later. R. L.'s? Decent. Courtesy of Times Argus and Tom Bisson Oh Chessy, what am I going to do? With the help of the Barre Woman's Club, the Council created one of the most spectacular balls in years. Ice, reputed as one of the top bands in New England, played for the gala event held at the Barre Auditorium on December 22. King John Plante and Queen Paula Gherardi were chosen by the senior class, with the junior, sophomore, and freshman classes each contributing a couple to the court. The Spaulding wrestling team this year won its third consecutive state championship, finishing in the state tournament with three individual champions—Jerry Chaloux in the 126-pound class, Keith Rand in the 138-pound class, and Brian Bailey in the 167-pound class. Brian also placed third in the New Englands. Brent Potvin came away with second place in the 185-pound class, as did Tom Corey in the 155-pound class. Under the direction of coaches Chuck Welch and Mike Anderson, the very young and inexperienced team lived up to par, ending the season with a 13 and 3 record, losing the three dual matches to Middlebury, Colchester, and a very tough New York team. Although the team was young compared to other teams, they showed how pride and determination can prevail during competition. Each team member did what was expected of him and much more during the year and at the state tournament, where there were several exciting upset matches. It was a narrow victory over Middlebury, 18014 to 178, but the victory was well earned. The year was also marked by another bright spot — it was the first time in all the years that Coach Welch has been with the team that they have beaten the always tough St. Johnsbury team in both their meets. This year, the varsity squad had only four seniors, giving some younger wrestlers plenty of experience. Seniors Tom Corey, Scott Sanborn, and co-captains Brian Bailey and Brent Potvin will be very much missed, as they led and inspired the team to the championship title. However, there is plenty of younger talent on the Tide team, including two state champions—juniors Jerry Chaloux and Keith Rand. Added to this are several sophomores, such as Tad Cochran, Mario Leclerc, Chip Simmonds, Jake Paton, and third in the state Patrick Kerin. The Crimson Tide is also looking forward to some freshman power in Steve Bullard. The JV squad also seems to be shaping up several stars, as they had five winners in the regional tournament—Jake Paton, David Gehlbach, Scott Soucy, Kevin Soucy and Craig Houle. 109 Brent Potvin gets ready to start Ill Mario Leclerc (112 lbs.) Sixty-three boys tried out, and 34 were chosen to represent the varsity and junior varsity teams. The team was made up of experienced players, and the potential for a good season was shown after the first couple of weeks. The team practiced hard and entered the season with a goal of winning the state championship. Even though we did not achieve our goal, we played some very good hockey and with a few more goals, the team could easily have achieved its goal. We ended the season in third place, but were unfortunately eliminated from the playoffs in the quarter-final round. The team ended with a 10-6 league record, and 10-9 overall. The hockey team lost seven games by one goal. The team graduates four players Mario Parent, John Plante, Chris Plante, and Mike Lafreniere. Tucker The Spaulding chorus drew approximately 90 members for the '77-'78 school year. Ann Hutchins served as president, Stephanie Martin and Martin Royer were accompanists. Directed by Mr. David Castonguay, the chorus performed a various selection of music from Brahms to Chuck Mangione to Broadway hits. Their main concerts consisted of a Christmas presentation and an exchange concert with Kitchener, Ontario in the spring. In order to raise money for the trip to Toronto and Kitchener, the chorus had a magazine drive which smashed all previous sales records. Another group project was an entry in the annual snow sculpture contest—the Titanic crashing into an iceberg. The chorale is a small madrigal group which performs at various social gatherings as well as regular concerts. The 16 members were selected during try-outs the previous spring. Their music is mostly from the Renaissance period. The chorale had their own exchange with Bristol, Conn, and participated in a madrigal festival. They sold singing valentines in February as a fund-raising project. The Pittsburgh Honors Chorus was chosen by the American Choral Directors Association. Thirteen people came from Vermont, seven of them from Spaulding. They spent four days at a conference in Pittsburgh. Front: M. Hutchinson, J. Woodworth, L. Spear, A. Hutchins, S. Fraser, M. Seniors made up a large part of this year's band and will be hard to replace. Mr. Stan Flink's musicians performed a lot of new music such as Rocky, Star Wars, and Instant Concert. They also participated in the magazine drive and the Ontario exchange concert. The band kept quite busy, providing music during half-time at the football games, at pep rallies, Memorial Day and Homecoming parades, and the Art Show. A small pep band, led by Dodd Johnson, performed at home basketball games. A stage band was also formed for entertainment at concerts and dances. 156 The Spaulding orchestra, directed by Mrs. Julia LeBlanc, worked on a variety of music this year including Fiddler on the Roof, We've Only Just Begun, and Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. Although the orchestra had a small number of members, it continually gave performances that were termed excellent, interesting, and well-played. The orchestra worked very hard to achieve the small amount of recognition and praise that it received. Of the 22 members, five tried out for the All-State Music Festival. The complete orchestra attended the Winooski Valley Music Festival and the exchange concert with Kitchener,Ontario in May. Front Row: M. Morin, L. LaPerle, D. Gillis, M. Willette, L. Roberts, D. Although there is more to the class than publishing a newspaper, planning, writing, and selling The Sentinel is the main activity. There is much more to putting out a newspaper than just writing the stories, as the Journalism class has learned. First of all, a paper needs money to operate. Funding is needed for paper, printing, cameras, and film. Only a small part of this comes from sales; most comes from advertisements. So, the first thing the class did in September was to trek downstreet to sell ads to the area merchants. After getting them, a few members put their artistic abilities to work to design the actual ads. The next order of business is to decide what stories to write for the paper. The staff must take into account that the paper will come out about a month after it is planned and not choose stories that will be old news by then. In an effort to avoid out-of-date articles, this year The Sentinel has tried to emphasize features and interviews. In order to do this, the class had to learn how to interview properly, take good notes, and prepare questions. Finally, they learned to write up the stories in newspaper style. After the stories are written, they have to be typed and then retyped into even columns. Many lines are typed still another time because of mistakes. The typewritten copy is then pasted onto a facsimile page along with photographs and ads. This is sent to the printer and returned as the familiar Sentinel. The day before selling the papers is spent folding them and separating them into homeroom piles. After selling them, all the change is counted and put into rolls. Then, work is begun on the next Sentinel. Ann Lauzon, Debbie's host sister, is president of the club. Miss Watson, who has been with the SHS chapter since it was formed in 1963, is advisor. Among the annual AFS fund-raising projects is Radio Day, held at WSNO on March 7. Members of the club operate the local radio station by selling and writing advertisements, assisting with news programs, and serving as disc jockeys. Also being planned is an AFS weekend at SHS for all AFSers in Vermont. 166 Debra Munro, AFS exchange student and Ann Lauzon, her hos sister 1st Row: S. Hutchins, S. Collins, J. Delphia, T. Bailey, T. Starting the year off with more than sixty members, the Council is looking forward to big things. Under the leadership of Tammy Ouellette, President; Laurie Spear, Vice-President; Tammy Cross, Secretary; and Jennifer Perry, Treasurer; the Council began the year with its usual Freshman Reception and Initiation. It also started something new this year — an orientation for freshman when they picked up their locker keys the week before school. Started as an experiment, its purpose was to lessen freshman jitters with an assembly and upperclassmen located throughout the building to help show them around. Apparently it worked, and the project may be continued in the years to come. The Council took on its regular job of handling the concession stand at the football games, which brings in its year's main income. Under the chairmanship of Sarah Reid, the Christmas Ball was held at the Barre Auditorium. The Barre Woman's Club lent a helping hand to make the Ball one of the best ever. The Council has also been very busy with other projects, such as the monthly calendars in the main lobby, the Spaulding Good Citizen of the Month award, a Christmas Food Basket for the poor, and the elections of the freshman and sophomore class officers. This year, the Student Council has set its sights on what is probably the biggest project ever undertaken by a council. It is conducting a drive for new curtains in the SHS Auditorium. Under the chairmanship of senior Marie Bouffard, the Council is searching for an estimated $3000 to replace the backstage curtains. Most of the money will be gotten through donations from school and community groups. The Council also hopes to get some aid from the Barre School Board. If the drive becomes very successful, the Council would like to try and replace the front velvet curtains as well. Money-raising projects to help the drive have been discussed, including a bottle drive in early spring involving all of the school groups. The Council also plans to give a couple of scholarships to worthy seniors, and possibly some type of award for an enthusiastic school leader who has improved school spirit during the year. The Student Council is set up by the students, for the students, and is only as good as the students make it. With the large membership this year, there are several very interested people who will really make the 1978 Student Council a smashing success! Action may not always 0RIW j HHPPIN£SS. It's the strangest experience to look at something which you have worked on all year long and to realize that it was worth all the long, tedious hours. And tedious they were. Remember our crest-fallen faces when the publisher left a note saying that we had to do all our copy paste ups? Or doing practice layouts. They were the hardest thing to get the hang of, but we hung in there, and as we flip through these pages, it's with pride that we look at our work. And of course there were the deadlines. Did we ever meet one? We were all so relieved when we thought our work would be finished by the February 18 deadline, but the days dragged into March and we were still in Room 17 until 4:00 or 5:00 every evening. Then there was typing , and re-typing, and still not getting it right. Oh no, I didn't push prime...Don't forget to QL, then return... Mark, you didn't font change the poetry... Ten on twelve, right? Eventually, we got all the copy typed and pasted up, proofread, and sent back to the publisher. Still, there will be mistakes, and these will be what everyone notices, instead of a special caption or headline. Our work didn't stop in Room 17, however. We were always chasing after someone for something. Mary, I need a cartoon to fill this space... Chuck, I need a special picture. Do you think you could take it, develop it, and print it by next mod? Then there were all those club write-ups; none of us ever realized there were so many clubs at Spaulding, especially Marie. That's----club to the FRONT lobby. Sports sections were always fun. Alison, did you ever finish the soccer section? Debbie, you must really be sick of the word hockey. Stephanie, did you ever find a picture of Peter? And Marie, bet you'll never look at another football picture again. Mr. Freeman hung in there through all our ups and downs. Now, I don't want to tell you about this yet, because I don't want to tell you everything at once; it'll just confuse you. There are a lot of memories in Our Echo 1978 — both the ones we've captured on these pages for others, and the ones we've made while working on the yearbook. None of us realized what we were getting ourselves into back in September, but none of us would change it now. For this is truly our Echo. 191 Business Staff Front Row: Becky Maurice, Vickie Acebo, Tammy Cross, Phyllis Wheeler, Karen Lague, Mary Ambrosini, Marie Bouffard Rite Martineau, Mark Bates, Karen Pomer, Laurie Spear, Donna Sawyer.
