The VFW planned it so meticulously that only once were we off’■schedule. The itinerary we followed would be too long to reproduce here, but here are the places we sawaand things we did: Mount Vernon, furnished very much as it was when George Washington lived there. The Smithsonian Institution, which houses the Hope Diamond, the ‘Spirit of St. Louis , dinosaur bones, and lots more. Performance of a musical at Ford's Theater. The Washington Cathedral. Arlington Cemetery. Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials. JFK gravesite, the Eternal Flame. 12 Marianne is second from left in picture above. On opposite page, she is second from right. Iwo Jima memorial. National Archives, where originals of many historical docu- ments, including the Constitution, are displayed The Capitol House and Senate galleries. Library of Congress, where an original copy of the Gutenberg Bible is displayed. Bureau of Engraving and Printing, where money is printed and where we held $40,000 in printing SlO’s in our hands. (No Free Samples) The FBI building where we saw some of the labs where crimes are solved. The White House furnished with many heirlooms left by various Presidents and their wives. Here we saw President Ford; the five VOD winners shook his hand. By the end of the six days, the 53 of us were exhausted. Some of us were also warm friends, and there were tears every- where when it was time to leave. The trip to Washington DC was an unforgettable experience, and we owe the VFW, our teachers, and everyone else whose efforts helped to bring us there a debt of gratitude. THE BRIDGE BUILDER An old man, going a lone highway. Came at the evening, cold and gray, To a chasm, vast and deep and wide, Through which was flowing a sullen tide. The old man crossed in the twilight dim — That sullen stream had no fears for him; But he turned, when he reached the other side. And built a bridge to span the tide. “Old man, said a fellow pilgrim near, “You are wasting strength in building here. Yoi r journey will end with the ending day; f You never again must pass this way. You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide, Why build you the bridge at the eventide? The builder lifted his old gray head. “Good friend, in the path I have come,’’ he said, “There followeth after me today A youth whose feet must pass this way. This chasm that has been naught to me To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be. He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I am building the bridge for hirp.’’ WILL ALLEN DROMGOOLE 15 Mr. William Atkinson Assistant Principal OFFICE AIDES Front Row: R. Rossi, C. H. S. auditorium. The theme was based on Frank Baumls famous Wizard of Oz , but members of our senior class rewrote the script reminising anxieties of their years here at Spaulding. As the play began, parents, students, and teachers as well laughed with us as they were watching some of their favorite teachers being portrayed by our senior class. Our full house made all the rushing around and last minute practices all seem worthwhile. We wish to thank all Varsity S Club's Christmas Tree Sale If you were up at 7:00 a.m. on December 14, you might have noticed a bunch of Spaulding atheletes shivering in front of the school before jumping into trucks. This was a sure sign that Christmas was right around the corner because the Varsity yS club was in preparation for the Annual Christmas Tree Sale. We all went to Mr. Bohn's tree farm and pulled 200 trees off of the feild and proceeded to pile them on the trucks to bring them back to school where we sold them for the remainder of the day. This was our second your to do the project. Our left over trees were donated to the Salvation Army. 105 106 girls field hockey Front row: Coach Gray, J. Periera, S. Hoag, M. White, J. Davis, J.
