OUR ECHO 1973 SPAULDING HIGH SCHOOL BARRE, VERMONT In My Life There are places I remember All my life, though some have changed, Some forever not for better, Some have gone and some remain. All these places have their moments With lovers and friends I still can recall. Some are dead and some are living In my life I loved them all, But of all these friends and lovers. There is no one compares with you. And these memories lose their meaning When I think of love as something new. Though I know I'll never lose Affection for people and things that went before, I know I'll often stop and think about them. In my life, I loved you more. — Beatle Song Sung at Commencement June 14,1973 2 September 1969, and suddenly here we were, surrounded by places we didn't know long halls, big classrooms, a huge audi- torium, an empty gymnasium . . and 1300 unfamiliar faces! Four years have passed, and we have become acquainted; we have grown to like the people and to enjoy our surroundings. During these four years at Spaulding High School, we have encountered many new people and visited many unusual places. Each one means something different to each of us. Come as we retrace our foot- steps through our year 1973. Meet the peo- ple and visit the places which are important to us. Our Classrooms Here are some of our classrooms, the heart of Spaulding High School. Here we find the rhythm of our year. We see the laboratory where our cu- riosity is aroused, the art class where we find the joy of creativity in sketching a portrait, the ma- chine shop and the printing graphics class where we acquire precision and skills necessary for modern industry. The challenges of our class- rooms are rich and rewarding. 7 8 Our Gym Physical education classes, pep rallies, junior proms, art shows, even donkey basketball games, all these have made our gym one of the busiest spots this year. Hard work and exercise, imagination and fun, these have filled our days. We remember steel wool sculptures, lively music, excitement 9 Large audiences have entered our auditorium doors to enjoy fine music and dramatic eve- nings, as well as other memora- ble events — You Can't Take It with You, our senior play, ex- cellent glee club, band, and orchestra concerts, an up-to- the-minute showing of fash- ions created in homemaking classes, the ever-witty and en- tertaining Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, The Pirates of Penz- ance, the rollicking Faculty Fol- lies, and finally, the quietly moving Recognition Sunday service — an inspirational be- ginning for our graduation week 10 At our suggestion, the School Board has named our athletic field in memory of Dr. A. G. Pen- do, who enjoyed with us games and pep rallies, hot dogs and cokes, bonfires and cheers, and most of all, graduation. Pendo Memorial Field There Are Places I Remember — . .. The Spaulding Bookstore ... the Buses We've Been Here Before All these places, They've been homes for us; We've lived here, Or so, at least, it seems. They've seen us all, Happy and sad; They've seen us laugh and shout And sometimes cry. How do we say good-bye To places we have lived? How do we say good-bye To places we have loved? We won't say good-bye. We'll just quietly steal away. We'll visit these places again, But it won't be the same. — John LaGue '73 15 Our School — Spaulding 16 Mr. Ernest Lyon Superintendent of Schools Administration Mr. William Atkinson with Janet McCabe and Tulay Sayiner Mr. Robert Burdett, Principal x Mrs. Laura Biggs, Secretary to Mr. Atkinson Mrs. Mary Thow, Secretary to Mr. Burdett Principal's Office Mr. Bernard Dubay Guidance Mr. Robert Abbiati, Guidance, and Jan Hedding Mr. Frank Lee Work-Study Coordinator Vocational-Technical Center 20 A Vocational-Technical Center Office Mrs. Beverly Bertolini, Secretary, Vocational-Techni- cal Center Office. The team picked up 13 points, with Dave Noyes winning the 440. Dave ran the event only twice during the season, and on his second try came home with the championship. Mike Dickinson was fourth in the javelin, Tony Bianchi took sixth in the high jump, Tony Sykes' good two-mile effort brought him a fine third place, while he placed sixth in the mile. John Marshall finished fifth in both the 100 and the 220. Spaulding's thinclads rounded out a good season by sending Dave Noyes, Tony Sykes, Mike Dickinson, and John Marshall to the New England Meet. The fine new courts, constructed on our former parking lot, have greatly increased interest in tennis. Under the tutelage of Coach Paul Poirier, a growing number of students look forward to both intramural and intermural events. Fine spring weather found an eager group of Spaulding lasses competing against nearby schools in softball. With many promising underclassmen and a large number of experienced seniors, the Band had a busy, successful year. During the fall, we played at home foot- ball games, and at Christmas we per- formed for the holiday assemblies. Later a smaller group known as the Pep Band played for home basketball games. As the year progressed, we began prepar- ing for our annual exchange concert, and in March we travelled to Deerfield, Mass., stopping on the way to present a concert at Bellows Falls High School. Later in the spring the Band presented assemblies, an evening concert, and an open-air concert. The high point for the year was the an- nouncement that the Barre Rotary Club had voted to fund the purchase of new uniforms for the entire Band. We are, indeed, grateful to these public-spirited men who are encouraging future students to discover the work, success, and fun that band membership provides. — Mark Booth 73 Spanish Club Scholarship Goes to Rebecca Perry SPANISH CLUB Row 7: Dale Bresett, Joanne Aja, Nona Smith, Janet McCabe, Michael Rubalcaba, Gregory Baldor, Michael Schini. Celestials And This Is Love The music of the sun is speaking to me in rays of warming colour while the spirit of the cloud becomes a surging burst of blending tones. The air in which I live and sleep takes on a muted feel of rushing depth as the splendid bird of flaming white takes wing, not leaving me behind. The hand of you reaches out to me, I take it knowing why. Like a budding branch of greenery we reach for the sky believing what we feel. Stretching sound molding water seeing only transparencies, our hands are joined with those of the stars — and you and I begin. — Brian Amet I only had but one son that lived. I had four and saw three of 'em buried. Oh, now my heart aches to see the tears run down this poor old woman's cheeks. She doesn't understand my sorrow — just my smile and the squeeze of my hand. I once had a girl just your age she's married now She has three or four children. I don' recall my mind is so old . .. I squeeze her hand again, and this time she squeezes mine, too. And then it's time to move on again — to the next room with a lonely heart anxious to tell me she had a girl once. She smiles and asks me, Are you Margaret? No, I say. And I betray the hope in her eyes that maybe I'm her Margaret. You know, she says, We all get older every year. And then, You look different, Margaret — do you feel different? And choked by emotion, I nod my head, yes. I must go — and for her, it may as well be for forever. She asks me again — Are you Margaret? And this time I nod my head and whisper a tear-clogged yes. And her eyes brim over with tears as she smiles; Good-bye, Margaret, Good-bye. — Kathi Wright 207 Spaulding Musicians Outstanding Performers Vermont State Music Festival Scholarship Audihon Lise Messier — Vocal Brian Amet — Instrumental — Brian Amet Knights of Columbus State Council Scholarship David Gacetta National Honor Society Deborah Bancroft Deborah Beaudry Marie Carrier Susan Churchill Pierre Couture Monique Dandurand lames Delano Pamela Du prey Michele Fisher Rachel Letter Mary McPherson Micki Minoli Melissa Moore Susan Pelkey Susan Rousse Tulay Sayiner Pamela Swift Gerald Vigneault Anthony Sykes Debra Webster Paul Woodruff David Gacetta receives a $250 Scholarship from the Knights of Columbus.
