Students watch a letterpress cylinder press. Mr. Freeman show a student how to stack pages before binding. PRINTING GRAPHICS The student enrolled in printing graphics, learns to perform the basic operations of type setting and press- work, layout and design, methods used in printing books, magazines, and newspapers, in addition to the operation of the various machines used in the printing industry. Printing craftsmen specialize in one area: type composition, photog- raphy, platemaking, presswork, or binding. Courses in printing are available to high school students in the junior-senior years. 11

Dennis Dessereau, Roy Gale, Douglas Barberi. MACHINE TRADES Machine Shop practice represents the largest single group of skilled jobs in manufacturing. The Machinist is the key to all trades. His mark is on every phase of industry. He translates the ideas of the designer and inventor into practi- cal and efficient machinery. The machinist fabri- cates, repairs, or makes parts for all pieces of equipment used by mod- ern manufacturing plants. He uses all types of precision instruments. Courses in Machine Shop Practices are avail- able for in-school youth; out-of-school youth; adults; employed, unem- ployed, and underem- ployed youths and adults; and veterans. The Ma- chine Shop Practice courses include training in such areas as Bench Work, Lathe Work, Drill Press Work, Milling, Shaping, Planing, Grind- ing, General Mainte- nance and Repair, and Heat Treating. Related subjects include Blueprint Reading, Machine Trades Mathematics, Machine Shop Science and Metallurgy, Personal Employment and Safety. 13
