STONE TRADES Stone Trades at the Vocational Techni- cal Center is the first course of its kind in the United States. Open to Juniors and Seniors, the course offers experience in the following areas: monumental granite cutting, the use of machinery such as pneumatic tool, surface machine, wire saw, contour grinder, carbo saw, operating the derrick, lumping (chaining granite) and sandblasting. Also related subjects included estimating of stone, lettering, trade science, trade math- ematics, and freehand drawing. Thus with the broad view of the granite industry that the students will receive, they may choose the area they wish to special- ize in, whether in manufacturing, sales or dealership.

Students watch a letterpress cylinder press. Mr. Freeman show a student how to stack pages before binding. PRINTING GRAPHICS The student enrolled in printing graphics, learns to perform the basic operations of type setting and press- work, layout and design, methods used in printing books, magazines, and newspapers, in addition to the operation of the various machines used in the printing industry. Printing craftsmen specialize in one area: type composition, photog- raphy, platemaking, presswork, or binding. Courses in printing are available to high school students in the junior-senior years. 11
