OUR ECHO 1970 SPAULDING HIGH SCHOOL BARRE, VERMONT 1970 MARKS OPENING OF REGIONAL VOCATIONAL TECHNICAL CENTER 15 COURSES OFFERED The Barre Regional Vocational-Technical Center begins to take shape as the steel framework appears. The architect’s drawing shows the final design of the new wing- The Vocational-Technical Center Opens This year the doors of the million-dollar Regional Vocational-Technical Center swung open for students. In the fall we were excited by our first look at the addition to the existing Spaulding High School. This entire wing was constructed with state and federal funds at no direct cost to the city of Barre. When adults visited the new building during a special open house, we heard comments like, “Now we know what a really comprehensive school looks like,” and “There’s no better place to spend a million dollars than on a school like this.” Visitors could readily see where a million dollars was spent — rows and rows of technical equipment in the electronics department, printing presses and similar equipment in the printing and graphics division, plumb- ing and heating equipment, along with sheet metal train- ing equipment in the building trades division, profession- al hotel and restaurant equipment in the food trades lab- oratory, the extensive health occupations center, the highly mechanized automotive mechanics shop, and of course, the miniature stone shed. We are proud of the several firsts in the Vocational- Technical Center the stone trades course is the first one of its kind in the entire United States, while the di- versified occupations program is the first in Vermont. And we must mention the first school store at Spaulding, operated by students in the distributive education program. Brick by brick the new Vocational-Technical Center becomes a reality. PAUL W NUTTER Director Barre Regional Vocational-Technical Center with David Flint MR. LESLEY BELL Freshman Sophomore Guidance Counselor NELDA BERINATO Bookkeeper Brian Sargent presents a special VICA Award to Mr. Nutter. 6 BEVERLY BERTOLINI ROBERT ABBIATI Secretary to Mr. Nutter Junior-Senior Guidance Counselor 7 ROY BUS WELL Cutting stations with suction device for removing dust. STONE TRADES Stone Trades at the Vocational Techni- cal Center is the first course of its kind in the United States. Open to Juniors and Seniors, the course offers experience in the following areas: monumental granite cutting, the use of machinery such as pneumatic tool, surface machine, wire saw, contour grinder, carbo saw, operating the derrick, lumping (chaining granite) and sandblasting. Also related subjects included estimating of stone, lettering, trade science, trade math- ematics, and freehand drawing. Thus with the broad view of the granite industry that the students will receive, they may choose the area they wish to special- ize in, whether in manufacturing, sales or dealership. ROBERT FREEMAN Printing and Graphic Arts Above Mr. Freeman assists a student on the linotype machine. Here we see a student hand setting type from a Ludlow case. Students watch a letterpress cylinder press. Mr. Freeman show a student how to stack pages before binding. PRINTING GRAPHICS The student enrolled in printing graphics, learns to perform the basic operations of type setting and press- work, layout and design, methods used in printing books, magazines, and newspapers, in addition to the operation of the various machines used in the printing industry. Printing craftsmen specialize in one area: type composition, photog- raphy, platemaking, presswork, or binding. Courses in printing are available to high school students in the junior-senior years. 11 WESLEY NORRIS End milling and face milling. This course stresses fundamental knowledge and the ap- plication of mathematics and science the electronics theory that will help the students keep pace with these future courses of study. Students learn how to analyze electronic circuits mathematically and then investigate their behavior in the laboratory. Students select replacement parts during a laboratory assignment. 25 E. JOHN CORKINS Food Trades with Donald Askew A crisp salad for lunch? FOOD TRADES There are many jobs available to high school gradu- ates who want to get started immediately in the food service business. The industry employs more than a mil- lion waiters and waitresses, 60,000 cooks, 350,000 food production workers and 200,000 counter fountain work- ers. And that doesn’t include the 75,000 new openings every year. As an individual gains experience, he can be promoted quickly to better paying jobs and may advance to super- visory or managerial positions, such as waiter-captain, hostess, dining room manager, maitre d'hotel and man- ager of the establishment. A high school graduate can can enter the business di- rectly and work his way to the top. Thousands of people have taken advantage of this aspect of the industry, not present in a number of other fields. However, the fastest way to move ahead in the food service industry is to start further up the ladder. 26 Making pie crust. 27 HEALTH OCCUPATIONS This course is offered to stimu- late an interest in many career opportunities in the health serv- ices. I feel that many of you will soon be trapped in a material exis- tence. It is the easy course, but it will also sterilize your soul. I can only tell you that a much more satisfying life awaits those who are willing to look for it, in themselves, in the people around them, in nature, or in their chosen work. It requires a personal search, 4 painful examina- tion of yourself, your life. Such questions can be very damaging. The answers can turn your world upside down. In the modern vernacular this final reconciliation of oneself to oneself may be termed “getting it all togeth- er” or “finding out where your head is at.” Life cannot be fully realized until these spiritual values are realized. “Seek and ye shall find.” And above all, I urge you not to be dehumanized by your environment, from FOR WHAT ITS WORTH The Valedictory Address Donald A.
