VJitk • • • Cjf-oreword In Our Echo” we recall many memories which pour from the treasure chest of our four years at Spaulding. By individual ef- fort in class and in our many activities we have, with the help of our teachers, forged a key which can unlock the future for each of us. It is our purpose in this yearbook to ex- amine the materials and construction which form this key. Every one of you has fabricated your own key by the way in which you have lived your lives up to the present time and have taken advan- tage of your educational training in vary- ing ways and to different degrees. The grooves and notches which you have put into your key will determine which door will open to you. May you find success as you unlock your door of opportunity. Dr. Clyde G. Fussell, Superintendent C our sc MISS MARY STEPHEN Bookkeeper of Barre City Schools MRS. JENNE LANGFORD Secretary to Dr. Fussell Left to right: MR. DEVINE, DR. FUSSELL, MR. PENDO With this key”—exemplified by your high school education and accomplish- ments, many doors may be opened to you, but it would be a fallacy to think that all doors lead to success. You, and you alone, must make the proper choice. Remember too, seniors, that this same key may also be used to close doors. Being unable to apply what you have learned, disregarding consideration and rights of others, failure to use ethics in all your dealings with fellowmen, lacking definite religious beliefs, may all lead to the clos- ing of such doors. May your doors to opportunity never close! A. G. Pendo, Principal ‘TThat rWe rJ-olloweJ MR. FRANK DEVINE, Assitt. Principal Director of Guidance MRS. PELKEY, Treasurer-Assoc. Whatever the student’s choice of curriculum, English, the accepted spoken language of our great country, is the only £ •• e Oil four-year requisite for graduation, and justifiably so. THANK YOU BARRE SCHOOL STUDY COMMITTEE 16 On November 2, 1962, the city of Barre voted for a new high school. Taking a great part in the cam- paign for the new school was the School Study Com- mittee which worked for months trying to show the citizens that we had to have a new school. The proposed new school will be divided into subject areas such as mathematics, languages, and bus- iness training on two floors, and with a basement for janitors’ storage and the boiler room. The main offices will probably consist of offices for the principal and the assistant principal, storage, the general office, and a consultation room. Everything will be much easier because of the additional space and modern conditions. Also the school will be in one location instead of the present two. The Vocational School will be completely acces- sible, with rooms for such subjects as memorial arts, shop, and auto mechanics in the school building. Extra curricular activities, including sports and music, will have their home in a gym where the home games may be played, and a hall where concerts and plays may be given. Outside the building will be a football field, a baseball park, and a track. With the promise this new school holds, we know the education of Barre’s students in the future will be assured. o Business Manager, M. Goldman; Editors, E. Merryfieid, T. LOIS RENFREW, Advisor Our Echo” has been created through many hours of work by the business and editorial staffs. Under the guidance of Mrs. Lois Renfrew and our editors, Elaine Merryfieid and Terry Demas, the editorial staff set out to collect material on a very active and diversi- fied basis. Our first task was to select a theme which would reflect the thoughts of our class. The theme chosen was With this key . . .” Then, under assigned committees, the staff made rough drafts of certain sections of Our Echo.” Diligent work was required to compile these sections to meet definite deadlines and to make the entire book coherent. 99 With Mr. Williams as financial advisor, and Marc Goldman as business manager, the business staff broke all Echo” sales records, an accom- plishment which will be difficult to surpass. Both the business staff and the editorial staff have had the difficult task of producing the final copy. We are pleased to have compiled a book which will evoke fond reminiscences for you, the class of 1963. Drawing the winner of the free Echo.” BUSINESS STAFF Fron Row: E. Baldwin. M. Goldman, S. This year also saw students paying ten cents per copy rather than including the subscription in the price of the AA ticket. Mr. Wilbur, the new advisor, chose an almost completely new staff. These young newspapermen had two jobs to accomplish — first, to produce the school newspaper and, second, to sell the New Look” to the student body. Both tasks continue satisfactorily. The first few weeks were spent in adjusting to our new routines and finding our way around the rambling building. The Freshman Reception was held September 2 5 th at the Barre Auditorium. We were the honored guests, and this was our official introduction to the social life of Spaulding. Soon all classes elected officers, and ours were President, Charles Butler; Vice-President, Mary Lou Marrion; Secretary, Maria Bonazolli; Treasurer, Mary Brady. An outstanding event of the year was the One-act Play Contest. We were proud and happy to win the contest with our presentation of, Three on a Bench. In the cast were Arlic Buttura, Charles Butler, Marie Fournier, and Karl Rinker. FRESHMAN RECEPTION Our jj-resh man fear 32 Our sophomore year, being more familiar with the school procedures, we were able to help the freshmen find their way around. The Sophomore Hop was held at the Barrc Audi- torium on October 28th. The Ambassadors provided the music and the theme was Halloween.” The big event of this year was choosing our ring. Instead of the usual class ring we chose a school ring. After five years this will be subject to change. Class officers for this year were: President, Sheila Buttura; Vice-President, Alan Rossi; Secretary, Marilyn Tucker; Treasurer, Mary Lou Marrion. SOPHOMORK HOP OUR SCHOOL. RING 33 Q.r Sopl ornovc fear Thoroughly familiar with all aspects of high school life at Spaulding, we eagerly entered our junior year in 1961. Our class officers were: President, Clayton Gage; Vice-President, Robert Aldrich; Sec- retary, Marilyn Pucker; Treasurer, Marilyn Andrus. The big event this year was our dance. Instead of a Junior Prom we decided to have a less formal af- fair which was held on May 11th. The theme was The Roaring Twenties and a teenage band from Montreal supplied the music. When Class Day approached, we were both happy and sad to realize the next fall we would be seniors with only one short year before graduation. JUNIOR DANCE 34 CLASS DAY Musically inclined students listen to Miss Bedell. You understand our government with Mr. Healey. Mr. Philbrook teaches future draftsmen. Chemistry neeJs a steady hand. Miss Austin makes Latin interesting. 35 Artistic talent is guided by Miss Cate. Practice makes perfect in typing. Miss Goodcll unfolds the past to prepare us for the future. Two heads are better than one in biology. Capable students listen to Miss White explain the “new math.” 36 Mr. Slayton instructs students in psychology. Mr. Politi’s comments in mechanical drawing are favorable. Mr. Wilbur’s senior English class listens intently. Mrs. Sassone’s French students enjoy French. 37 bront Row: B. Perry. J. Marsha, K. The play deals with the family of Herbert Gage who move into an abandoned New England house. But the Rock woods, the owners, return and want the house. Deter- mining to stay, the Rockwoods move into the bedrooms, thus complicating Gage’s im- pending breakdown because of the belief that his daughter has eloped with the Rock- wood’s son. Similar to most comedies, all ends well with the Rockwoods reclaiming the house, and the Gages moving into the barn. The play, presented on February 28th and March 1st, was directed by Miss Vir- ginia Brown, our dramatics coach. PERSONNEL OF PLAY PRODUCTION Left to right, front: Y. Coupal, M. Ross, A. Beltrami, E. It is made up of band members interested in fine instrumental music, with the addition of two violins, a cello, and a string bass. This group participates in the annual music festivals in addition to providing enter- tainment at intermissions of the one-act play contest and the senior play production. Much variety of styles of music has been attempted this year, ranging from the serious music of Bach and Beethoven to the light music of Leroy Anderson. PRACTICE SESSION MR. FLINK, Director 49 SPAULDING GLEE CLUB Our CU. C.U and Cohortis The Spaulding Glee Club harmonizes on alternating days at seven-thirty a. m. under the direction of Miss Pris- cilla Bedell, head of the Spaulding Music Department. The Glee Club is a selected group, the majority of whom are juniors and seniors with a sprinkling of sopho- mores. It is the result of an effort to form a relatively small group for less confusion, but large enough for quality musical production. The Special Chorus is open to all classes and because of this, it is quite a sizable ensemble. The annual music festivals were participated in and we were hosts to the Winooski Valley Festival last fall. Sev- eral programs were given for service clubs in Barre, in addition to the regular concert at Christmas time. SPAULDING SPECIAL CHORUS SPAULDING BAND Our J Alternating with the Glee Club and the orchestra, the band rehearses at the same hour with Mr. Stanley Flink, the director. The band has supported the school at every home football and basketball game, played at all the pep-rallies, and marched fifty strong in the Old Car Parade. Twelve members auditioned for the All-State Music Festival and also journeyed to Boston to audition for the New England Festival. Highlights of the year were the Christmas assembly, the spring concert, the state hospital concert, the two parent concerts, and the exchange concert with Peoples Academy of Morrisville. On June 17, 1962 six happy and excited girls joined the delegation of girls from high schools over the state at Vermont College in Montpelier, Vermont, to participate in the activities of the Green Mountain Girls’ State. An important part of the activities is the competition for state, county, and local offices. Out of the large number who ran for office, many won in the primaries but lost in the finals. We were pleased to have Mary Lou Marrion elected clerk of the Senate. Our social life provided us with ample relaxation so that at the end of the week we departed richer in the knowledge of our government and in the number of new friends. Left to right: D. Cary, M. J3°ijs j The twenty-fourth annual session of Green Mountain Boys’ State was held at Norwich University in Northheld, Vermont. Two hundred and seventy-three delegates of junior boys attended. Spirited political campaigning for state, county, and local offices was an ordeal for every- body. S. H. S. experienced the defeat of Michael Seely, a candidate for the state olfice of Lieutenant-Governor. All boys were elected to an office in some phase of government. Boys’ State will long be remembered for the precise and activated account of state, county, and local government which can be well utilized by those who attended. The Inaugural Ball culminated the closing events of Boys’ State. 79 Glass Offic ers Stated, left to right: Lee Aura Sanguinetti, Mary Lou Marrion, June West, Barbara Pryor, Shirley Crawford.
