— Foreword Our Echo of 1962 is a guided tour of memories of our four years at Spaulding High School: These four years have been filled with many joys, many sorrows, much fun, and much work. Our path to learning has walked without the aid of our fine faculty. We are thankful for the guideposts along this trail— the many activities, sports, musical organizations, and social gatherings. They have helped us to become more responsible citizens, while at the same time, have given us hours of enjoyment and fulfillment. For these reasons, we, the editors, have chosen You'll Never Walk Alone as the theme for Our Echo. We sincerely hope that this guided tour recalls for you, all the many wonderful times we've had during our four years at S.H.S. To you, the class of 1962, we wish all the luck, success, and happiness in the world. been a long rugged trail, one which we could not have -The Editors of Our Echo '62 , . Fussell is superintendent of seven city schools. He graduated from Middlebury with A.B. and A.M. degrees. He re- ceived his Dd. M. at U.N.H. and in '57 received his Ph.D. at the U. Conn. You'll never walk alone — Man is gregarious—he wants to walk with others on life's pathways. However, there are times when he needs to be alone, to think. Still he is not alone as all of his past and present knowledge helps to form the future dreams of man. His real thinking will need a true faith in God and all the knowledge that he can gain. These might be called God's gift to mankind to guide him onward, to help him master situations and raise higher the way of life for all men everywhere. Education goes on from birth to death,—one never knows when some gleam of knowledge may turn the tide of man's affairs. Tennyson has said Our echoes roll from soul to soul, and grow forever, and forever. May your thinking echo a firm faith in God, respect, and true love for your fellow man. Then you, too, will never walk alone. Our Guides on the Miss Stephen does the bookwork for the Barre City Schools; Mrs. Langford Dr. Fussel, Mr. Pendo, and Mr. Devine talk informally, is secretary to Dr. Fussell. Seniors—in choosing your theme You'll Never Walk Alone you have indeed chosen a truism. Since the incubation days of your education period some twelve years ago, you have never been alone. There has always been someone watching over you, someone guiding you, someone hoping and praying for your success. Now, as you are about to go out into this big, wide world to make a place for yourself, these same parents, teachers, friends, and your God, will still be watching, hoping, and praying that you'll make this world a better place to live in. No, definitely no, You'll Never walk Alone. A. G. Pendo, Principal Mr. Pendo, our principal, graduated in 1931 from Norwich with a B.S. degree. At Bates he received his M.Ed. Before coming to Spaulding Mr. Pendo studied at U.N.H., Trenton State Teachers' College, and Plymouth Teacher's College. Path of Learning MR. FRANK S. Maintenance Maintenance 13 We entered as meek freshmen, feeling ever so alone, yet eager to learn, and make Spaulding a part of our lives. We entered as freshmen in September of 1958 ee to see what high school had in store for us. ''n Saturday, September 20, 1958, most of the fresuv.an class was present at the Freshman Recep- tion given in our honor by the Student Council. This was the dance when we first experienced a receiving line. The freshman class sponsored a record hop and sold more tickets than any other Spaulding organiza- tion had done before. Our freshman class officers were: President—Billy Rossi Vice-President— Layne Higgs Secretary—AAichaI Barquin Treasurer—Sanford Johnson In June we donned our class colors of gold and red commonly known as mustard and ketchup. Our freshman class play was a huge success. First as Frosh, Then as Sophomores The ring we now wear proudly. In September, 1959, 138 sophomores entered the halls of Spaulding, feeling a little more important than the year before. This year our class officers were Sanford John- son, president; Judy Coxon, vice-president; Margaret Gehlbach, secretary; and Layne Higgs, treasurer. In September we voted for our class rings. A committee was made up of the home room presi- dents who chose the design for the rings which we received a few days before Christmas. Our Sophomore Hop was held on October 30. Over 200 people danced to the music of the Hi Lites at the auditorium, which was decorated appro- priately for our theme, Shine On Harvest Moon. Our entry in the annual one-act play contest was A Cup of Kindness. Six of our classmates ap- peared in this production. 14 Our last year as underclassmen in the hallr ' Spaulding was opened by the election of our officers: Buddy Bresette, president; Sanford Jol ., vice-president; Vivien Cornish, secretary; Ru.iaid Barden, treasurer. As Juniors, we scored a victory in the One-Act Play Contest with Sorry, Wrong Number. Our major project was a magazine drive in which the entire class participated. Soon Junior Prom time rolled around. Our theme, Over the Rainbow, was beautifully cented by pictures and scenes. Music was suppli d by the Ambassadors. As our Junior year came to an end, and we looked forward to being Seniors, we agreed that our first three years at Spaulding were adventurous, fun, and highly rewarding. The experience has taught us many things but most important it has taught us how to work together. The big project of the year was the sponsoring of a Writing Contest in February. Winning entries in four categories were pub- lished in the Sentinel and the authors were awarded trophies. Another first was the special subscription offer to graduates of the past year. In this way the grads can keep in touch, and we can know what everyone is doing in their respective schools or work. The Sentinel, indeed, can testify to the theme of this year's Echo in saying that we have never walked alone because of the fine supervision of our advisor, Mr. Jenness. It's been a great year! QujcUf 35 Early in November a meeting was held attended by all seniors who wished to work on Our Echo. Three editors, Brenda Drake, Betty Gioria, and Linda Gould, together with Skip Griffin as business manager, were chosen to work under the supervision of Mrs. Renfrew and Mr. Williams, our advisors. The first task of the staff was to choose a theme. We chose You'll Never Walk Alone, then planned the entire book in rough form and assigned different sections to various staff committees. Our advisor, Mrs. Renfrew, discusses Echo sales with Mr. Williams, head of the business staff. Our BUSINESS STAFF—M. Ellenwood, L. Gillander, B. Fiorucci, C. Griffin, M. Robinson, K. Dahl, E. Ginette. Every person gathered material for his section, and submitted his w.prk to the advisor and editors for approval. Meanwhile the business staff members were so- liciting ads and promoting sales for the Echo. There was a great deal of hurrying and worry- ing as deadlines drew near, for there were many pic- tures to be scheduled, plus copy to be written in or- der to prepare the final dummy. The staff has worked very hard to make this the kind of yearbook you want. EDITORS AND BUSIMANAGER: B. Drake, C. Griffin, B. Gioria, L. Gould. Echo” ROW 1: AA. E. Fontana, R. Desmarais, AA. Copeland. The orchestra could be found working hard every Thursday after- noon under the watchful eyes of Mr. Flink. Proof of their efforts was their fine performance at the Christmas Assembly. They also play at intermissions of school dramatic presentations, and at the Rotary Talent Show at the Barre Auditorium. This year four deserving musicians represented Spaulding at the Winooski Valley Music Festival. Our orchestra worked diligently to give us the kind of music we enjoy. Practice makes perfect. Musicians take a breather. Our Orchestra Carmen Usle, Karen Dahl, Janet West, and Norma Hanson attended the Winooski Valley Music Festival. Band delegates were sent to the Winooski Valley Festival where they took part in the concert composed of bands from many schools. As an annual procedure, the band participated in the Christmas Con- cert in addition to other local appearances at basketball and football games. Rehearsing diligently. Work hard!
