HISTORY UF THE EULLEGE In 1911, A Methodist minister, Dr.. English Camakgestablished a school of learning in which students might work for a portion of their expenses. He was aided by Mr. C. P. Hammond for who.m the present boys' dormitory 1S named. . I g E In 1913 John C. Cleveland gave 'a donation of land for the purpose of erecting the buildings at their present location. This was a great improve- ment over its beginning in a two-story house. Hammond Hall was erected in 1913, since then Walker Building, Judd Hall, Gymnasium and the Presidents Gflice have been added. . Dr. Camak remained President until 1924. Dr. 'Burgess was then elected to this oilice which he still holds. The school is owned and operated by the General Board of Missions of the Methodist Churchjln 1927, two years of college work was added to the high school curriculum. The college department grew very rapidly, soon receiving recognition as a college. . I- I In 1942 Textile Industrial Institute became Spartanburg Junior College. The Board of Trustees with the unanimous approval of the General Board of Missions of the Methodist Church made this change in appreciation to the Spartans who have participated in the growth of the school In 1943 Spartanburg Junior College and Wofford's Freshmen and So ho- .
