English Camakgestablished a school of learning in which students might work for a portion of their expenses. He was aided by Mr. C. P. Hammond for who.m the present boys' dormitory 1S named. . I g E In 1913 John C. Cleveland gave 'a donation of land for the purpose of erecting the buildings at their present location. This was a great improve- ment over its beginning in a two-story house. Hammond Hall was erected in 1913, since then Walker Building, Judd Hall, Gymnasium and the Presidents Gflice have been added. . Dr. Camak remained President until 1924. Dr. 'Burgess was then elected to this oilice which he still holds. The school is owned and operated by the General Board of Missions of the Methodist Churchjln 1927, two years of college work was added to the high school curriculum. The college department grew very rapidly, soon receiving recognition as a college. . I- I In 1942 Textile Industrial Institute became Spartanburg Junior College. The Board of Trustees with the unanimous approval of the General Board of Missions of the Methodist Church made this change in appreciation to the Spartans who have participated in the growth of the school In 1943 Spartanburg Junior College and Wofford's Freshmen and So ho- . Page Six , A CLASS HISTUHY In September, 1941, the aurora of another sunrise burst on the campus of Spartanburg Junior College, making a new day in the career of our present sophomore class. Students from the neighboring states of Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia found their way here. We, in our youthful aspirations, looked to the faculty for counsel and instruction. V New acquaintances were made, and we soon took up the studies of algebra. Spanish, French, chemistry, Bible, and trigonometry. Mr. Mooneyham was our sponsor. The president of the freshman class was Charles Peebles with Margie Stewart, Juanita Gentry, and William Edwards as vice-president, secretary, and treasurer, respectively. Eager for knowledge, we pursued our studies. Throughout the year we had our ups and downs. After our final examinations, we were freed from the study of books and permitted to go home. i After an intermission of fourteen weeks, the members of the class reas- sembled in their respective places. Some, for various reasons, did not return. Many of the boys gave up the thought of continuing their education and offeredthemselves to the service of their country. The afternoon of this all-important day in our lives was in September. 1942. Miss Annie Bell Brantley was chosen sponsor of our class. Charles Peebles was again made president. The duties of the vice-president were assumed by Cornelia Burns, those of secretary by Lee Belle Stanley, and those of treasurer by Ruth Brannon. As the climax of our history, the season of graduation now approaches. In spite of the excitement, there is a sensation of sadness that we are unable to express. . .a sadness that causes our hearts to turn leaden in our bosoms. a sadness because we have assembled for the last time. When we leave Spartanburg Junior College, we will be reminded of our parents whose sacrifices have represented their faith in us. The sunrise of this epoch has faded into a sunset, which in all its serenity and splendor, beckons us to go ever forward. As we leave the campus of Spartanburg Junior College, we face a world of chaos: a world that is torn and tattered by the curse of war: a world that we must help to reconstruct. We go into a world of reality rather than into a world of dreams. Each of us has an objective to work toward. an end to accomplish. The sunset casts its last rays upon this phase of our lives. May the reflection of all its beauty be intensified as we go forth to do the tasks which lie ahead! .ESTELLE STANLEY. Class HliSI'OI'liGI7. Pioneers--we dare to hope ' Fulillment of our wildest seeming dreams: That from a world of chaos and of strife ' Shall come a peace as man becomes like Christ And knows through Him the thing he so desires-Eternal Life. Pioneers-we dare to think, And remember still that this our life must show Some trace of Christ in all the things we do- Must help some feebler soul who gropes to find The thing he most desires above all else- To come with joyful heart and say unto N The world, Ah, yes, I know Him too. , .lil.- Pioneers-we dare to love All things and peoples, friend or foe, and yet To cast the base, the lowly from our heart, To live each day in self-forgetfulness, Remembering those near us, and those apart. , Pioneers-these common scenes Have stirred us on to light for greater things: To ever strive to reach the greatest goal That may be had--to chant a song of cheer To those from whom we part, and ever this: Try not to let our hearts become too sad. Pioneers-we dare to do Those tasks that challenge all our strength of will, Then toward the perfect aim our lives be made Through work we shall accomplish for mankind, And then our dreams shall not have been in vain, ' And our reward shall be the goal of 'life- The requiem of the unafraid. Let us turn the pages of about ten years of time and see what some of the present students at S. J. C. are doing in the year of Our Lord 1953, This we are able to do by the use of some advanced mathematical calculation revealed by the grains in some of the stones of the Prank Walker building. Some are in the ministry and are doing a great work. ' Charles Blackmon is the pastor of one of the large Methodist churches of the Upper South Carolina conference. Estelle Stanley is a missionary to China. Most of the others in our class are around close by, in various vocations and professions. Rurel Bell is back in South Cweorgia, farming and doing explorations in the wilds of the Okefenokee Swamp. Cornelia Thompson is teaching school and is coaching the girls' basketball team at her school. Henry Kenworthy has changed little.: he's still working hard-still using his intellect to serve in the capacity of editor of a large daily paper in a big city-and still rushing madly around at the last minute to get each edition out on time. Cecile Causey is thinking of getting married again assoon as she can make up her mind as to which of her present suitors to accept. ' Howard Ears Parker owns a large farm near Pendleton, S. C. He's raising chickens on the side to sell to the Avis Rarae of S. J. C., and making much profit. Helen Case is a stenographer for the Imperial Tobacco Company and spends most of her working time making records of the enormous sales made by America's No. l auctioneer- Howard Shorty Wall. Howard White has gone into politics and is now mayor of Gaffney. His gift of gab, which has been evident throughout his stay here is proving of some value after all. Garland Mule O'Shields is the physical education director and is assistant to Coach Slim B. Mooneyham here at S. J. C. Yes, Mule still knows where the basket is located. Ada Ruth Edge still has the same disposition which won her many friends while in school and it is serving her well in her present job of teaching school. Margie Stewart is teaching also. The music of one of the leading churches of Virginia is under the direction of Juanita Cientry, but her major career is that of a housewife. Beatrice Derrick is the wife of a farmer living near Leesville. She is active in the local church. Lee Belle Stanley is with her sister, Estelle, in China. Lee Belle is teaching the Chinese how to play American games, mainly basketball. Now let us look at one particular event of the year 1953--the alumni meeting of Spartan- burg Junior College. Shortly after the gathering opens, some of the boys begin a game which lasts until the gathering dissolves. Eaye Nix strolls in and everyones attention is turned to her. Immediately we notice that she is still quite attractive. Mazie Belk talks continuously about her husband and his faults. Thomas Euller has come up from Alabama. Yes. that ring he's wearing is the' ring of Auburn graduates. Very little is accomplished at this meeting, for the Rare Birds keep the group in a commotion--wanting to hurry to eat. If these prophecies prove too far wrong. don't look for me at that alumni meeting in 53. Of the class as a whole l prophesy that it will go into the world as an agent of truth and knowledge, with the ideal that nothing is too small to overlook nor too big to conquer. XVhen we come to our wits end and all seems despair. 'XVhy say-sail on. sail on. sail on and on. That spirit will typify the class of '43 throughout the years to come.
