On the other page is the Spartanburg lligh School marching band, in formation in their red and black uniforms as they appeared at several parades and football games. The sponsors and majorettes at the front add Color and beauty to the organiza- tion. Below on the left is a typical cheer practice, or pep meeting. in the gym. At the beginning of school on days when we have home games the student body assembles in the gym for these meetings. There they are led by the cheerleaders and band in yells and songs which will be used at the game. In the picture the band is playing and everybody is singing one of the fight songs, possibly Hail to the Crimson Tide. To the right below is a pic- ture of the stands at the Gaffney game on Thanksgiving Day. It was a beautiful day, and hundreds of Spartanburg fans went over to see the Tide beat Gaffney in the last game of the season. Ilere the band is playing and the crowd is clapping to the music. President Gregory Troutman is addressing the group. and is possi- bly discussing with the members one of the proj- ects council will support. This group is the stu- dent governing body at school. It is made up ol' the presidents of the homeroom sections. who are listed above the picture opposite. To bc clected president of a homeroom a student must have an average from the preyious year of at least 802 or the corresponding letter grade. The president ol' the student body. who presides at council meetings. is elected by the entire stu- dent hody. The olhcers pictured above and the members ol council are sworn into ollice at the traditional installation program which is held each fall. At this program the orchestra and the combined choruses perform. and the gym is dec- orated appropriately. with windows painted by the art students giving a lovely stained glass window etliect in the gymnasium. Something of the soleinnity and beauty of the service is felt in the picture to the left which shows the coun- cil membcrs filing into their seats during the processional. Xhilkc-1, Music at Spartan High NINTII GRADE CHORUS In a regular class practice under the direction of Mrs. Taylor are the girls who make up the ninth grade chorus. In addition to singing special num- bers in concerts as a distinct unit, this group performs as part of the big chorus. occasionally being used for dcscants and antiphonal effects. The presi- dent is Carolyn jones. DAVID SIIEPPARD These three people compose the music staff at Mr. Sheppard is the director of the concert and marching bands. Xlrs. Taylor directs all the choral music, and Miss Dent leads the orchestra and inter- mediate band. Both Hr. Sheppard and Niiss Dent teach instrumental 'ifec-der classes at the junior high schools. in order that the advanced organizations at high school will have a continuing supply of trined and capable players. 54 These three pages show some of the musical activity at Spar- tan High. On the top of the page opposite is a picture of the com- hined choruses as they appeared at the Student Council Installa- tion service. This big chorus is made up of the three smaller groups, the ninth grade girls' chorus fto the leftj, the boys' glee club fbottom of the oppos- ite page J. and the mixed chorus. Mrs. Margaret Taylor is the di- rector. The big chorus performs several times during the year- Installation, Christmas, Easter, the traditional Spring Concert and graduation. The three hun- dred members of the group also form a nucleus for cheering at pep meetings and games, and by their enthusiasm contribute a great deal to school spirit. Because of the fighting spirit of the team, which retnsccl to give np, the cheering and hopes of the students. and the excellent coaching of N111 Stntz. the team won their last five games. in- cluding a two-point victory over Greenville and a satisfying win over Gaffney in the final game.
