A Brief History of Schools in Spartanburg ENE town of Spartanburg was started in 1832. Sometime after this the tirst school building. a log cabin. was built near the site of the present resi- dence of XY. S. llowen. Later school was held in a frame building just south of this. Still later a frame building was erected on the rising ground now used as a cemetery. This was used for both church and school house. llere many of our older citizens re- ceived their education. The educational advantages of those days were poor indeed. The teachers were qualified if they could read. write and thrash, The terms lasted only a few weeks. The text books were whatever each pupil brought-llible. Life of Xlasliington. History of Eng- land, spellingbook. The next school was held in a one-room building located just west of the Xl. Church. llere is where our fathers and mothers attended school, ln this school there was an effort toward uniformity of text books. The teachers were more nearly tlnalitied and better paid and the terms were longer. ln l3fS a three-room brick building was erected on the site of our present building. It cost about seven thousand dollars and was considered one of the best in the county at that time. From this time on the school was graded. uniform text books were used and we may still hear glowing accounts of achievements in Klclintfeyl Readers and Rays Higher .Xrithmetic lt was in this building that the First common school graduates received their education. the lirst com- mencement exercises being in lS'l2. llowever, a feu had finished common school before this. ,Xs early as 1390 Physical Geography and Algebra were taught with the common school subjects. ln 15394 a lligh School was organized and in time offered its three years' lligll SClllml C4'vLll'sC. In IUOS our present building was completed and that year the school was certified. Two years later the school was granted a commission which it still holds.
