The 1975 Delta sta ff pre- sents to you the '75 Delta in- spired by the l890's. We hope we have captured the gaiety of the school year as it was in the Gay 90's . With Mr. johnson as our new headmaster the school year was both informative and fun. The year started with the traditional opening exercises. With the startled looks of seventh graders and new stu- lents and the familiar faces of ast year, we all headed into he school year of 1974-'75, DEDICATION This year we dedicate our yearbook to one whose quiet beauty and good cheer con- tinually brighten our school world. Her patience and kindness are boundless and her tal- ents numerous. She has unselfishly given her time to directing plays, decoratirlg for the junior-Senior Dance, and supervising school projects. Although her pedagogical domain has at various times served as a wardrobe room for drama presentations, as a book store, and as a parlor for teas, she joyfully accepts these temporary invasionsg and when they are over, she calmly transforms the library back again into a quiet corner of study. Because of all she has done for us, and because she has been both our counselor and our friend, it is our sincere pleasure to dedicate the 1974-75 DELTA to LUCY GRAMLING CROWLEY 7 The first few days of school dragged ion forever, as they al- ways do, but we all realized that summer vacation was not going to return. The spirit of the students for the team proved that foot- ball was welcomed at S.'D.S. The girls' hockey teams had, as always, winning seasons. The rest of the fall teams also had successful seasons. As always, we were all proud of the basketball and soc- cer teams. For the first year the Day School was involved in an interim pro- gram. Most of them were work ing at Wofford but some went to Charleston to Work at the Baptist College and some went to work for Congressman Mann. 1 We, the Delta staff, hope that you enjoy the '75 Delta and hope that we have succeeded in capturing the school year. We all wish for you to find pleasure in the years to come when you look back on this school year. So, without further hesit- ation, the Delta staff proudly presents to you the reflections of the Gay 90's on the 1975 Delta. k '1. ' . The DELTA workers labored for many months desperately trying to meet deadlines, gather pictures to be used, going on advertising excursions, even working on weekends to try and do the impossible---produce a yearbook. For several weeks, we really thought we would have to present a DELTA with no pictures, but finally they began to pour in, so we do have photography. There were many times when we all felt like screaming, tearing our hair out, even committing suicide, but we survived and kept on steadfastly until February 23, 1975, the last deadline of the year. And we rejoiced, knowing it was all over and we would no longer have to worry about copies, tool lines, lost croppers, and other assorted plagues associated with a yearbook. But, all in all, it was a rewarding year for all of us. We sincerely hope our efforts have been appreciated. 22 nl- Q -SN VY l 3 3-u Nt vnu I SKYLYNER THE SKYLYNER is the official newspaper of The Spartanburg Day School and is published seven or eight times during the school year. In the tradition of the press, the staff of THE SKYLYNER investigates news and reports on school activities and trends in student opinion. THE SKYLYNER occasionally has won rec- ognition for writing and lay-out design, but the main purpose of the publication is not to win awards. Hence THE SKYLYNER does not follow a proven format and avoids stereotyped copy and journalistic jargon. It has been instead, the policy of the staff to move in new directions toward the highest in literary journalismg and some of the most successful issues of the paper include journalism that goes beyond school boundaries to investigate such concerns as the rights and responsibilities of youth. The audience thundered at the melo- dramatic performance of Billy Blackford in his portrayal as Scrooge. Heartwarmed by the innocence of Mr. Cratchet, and Tiny Tim brought tears to their eyes. I 4 29 BUOK FAIR Once a year at a certain time a few chosen mothers arrive at school loaded down with boxes and boxes of books for the Book Sale. These are the Book Fair. Mothers, a division of the Mothers Club. They Work hard to earn money for the library. For one week the library is transformed into a book store. Tables are set up and covered with books of many and diverse categories: sports, gardening, cooking, hunting, fishing. There are children's books and books on art and music. People are invited to come into the li- brary and select books for themselves or gifts for someone else. Also on sale this year was wrapping paper for Christmas. Since the book sale is in Novem- ber, your Christmas shop- ping can be done quickly and efficiently. The mothers in charge of the Book Fair this year were Mrs. Joe Hudson, Mrs. Clyde Hamilton, and Mrs. james Toy. Their hard Work before, during, and after the sale, along with that of many volunteers who also gave their time, is greatly appreciated. The Book Sale this year was the most successful in the school's history, and THE DELTA would like to thank everyone for doing such commendable work for such a worthy cause. W, 1 ,,,,,,-.V gp' at 1' MGTHERS AT WORK HALLOWEEN OF 1974 Halloween in the lower school was exciting this year. The children had a big masquerade party, with a prize for the best costume. Hal Taylor, who is pictured in the upper left corner, was the winner of the contest. For enter- tainment, the S.D.S. blues band played an arrangement of melodies, which was thoroughly enjoyed by the youngsters! As a Halloween celebration for the upper school the key committee created a really exciting feastival starting with contests between classes to collect wood, the key committee had a bonfire, a square dance and a costume contest all for our amusement. Robert Brails- ford wore the winning costume - he was I dressed as a girl! 3 5 1 Xi c 'ffl .- Q' PARENTS NIGHT The faculty and Key Com- mittee hosted an open house on November 18, for the parents of SDS students. This program is designed to better aquaint the parents with the school's life and how it is run. Also this gives an opportunity for the parents of new students to meet the faculty and administration. The evening starts, as a normal school day does, by Mr. johnson holding assembly. He explains that no smoking is allowed and asks the par- ents to cooperate with the rules. This adds an authentic atmosphere to what their child's schedule and attend his classes. There the teacher explains what the child is learning and also how much material the teacher plans to cover dur- ing the school year. After classes the parents go to the lunchroom for refresh- ments and music, which concludes the evening. children do every day. Some of the assemblies were Susan Pennel and Ellen Watters as guest speakers, Mr. j'ohnson's band, the school band, the key committee put on a skit, and Friday the Juniors came dressed as Yippies , which corresponded with their slogan, Peace Rock. Naturally the main spectacle at home- coming are the games. Although we did not win all our games, everyone put forth their best efforts. Christie Holmes - Homecoming Queen . Only sixth grade students are eligible for the club this year, but it is planning to grow next year to include the upper school classes. The purpose of the club is to encourage effort, and to reward merit and promote those qualities of character that make for good citizenship. To qualify for mem- bership, the student must have honors or high honors for the tri- mester. There are nine sixth class members. Each member receives a cer- tificate of membership, a mem- bership card, and a copy of the junior Journal each month from the national office. When a student transfers to a different school, he does not lose his membership if he meets the requirements of his new school. CUM LAU DE SOCIETY The objective of the Cum Laude Society is the recognition of superior scholarship. It was founded in 1906 by Dr. Abram W. Harris, and model ed after Phi Beta Kappa. The society was originally for senior boys. However, later membership was ex- tended to juniors and girls. Arete' Dike' Time' is the motto of the soc- iety. The literal meaning is excel- lence, justice, honor. Each member should have these qualities as his personal goal, and should try to en- courage these in society. The chapters of the society are established only in schools of super- ior academic quality. The Day School is Very fortunate to have a charter, and also the only charter in South Carolina. Each chapter elects its own mem- bers. These elections are based on academic excellence. alone since there are other agencies for reward- ing excellence in others areas. The officers are elected by the individual chapters. At the Day School the president is Mr. Mike johnson, and the secretary is Mrs. Vincent Miller. NEW INITIATES FACULTY -1217 Sh 1 - . , . x, I . Seals MONTA MARTIN HUMPHREY OTHER BEAUTY' We speak of Beauty, and we seem to mean An outward charm of loviness and graceg But there's a deeper beauty that's unseen, That is not manifest in form or faceg It is the love that ever is the sameg It never wavers, and it never breaks. Sorrow and death it conquers. I acclaim It stands forever perfect. And it takes All storms upon its wide eternal wings, Knowing a course, knowing an ancient portal Opening on fair and everlasting things.
