wmm 1967 Mulldog sparta high school sparta, Illinois i yean Mu Kedpatk EDITOR LYNNETTE DIERKS Assistant Editor foreword It has been said that one o The basic idea in planning the B a good book with anticipation and closes it with profit. OG has been the creation of a book that will meet these requirements. We, the-annual staff, are proud to present to you our final pride and joy—the 1967 BULLDOG. We hope when you open this treasure chest, you will find the key that will unlock the riches of the past year. We have worked this year with one goal in mind, to turn out the best BULLDOG pos- sible.” As editor this year, I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who worked so long and hard to make this book a reality. It is impossible in this limited space to enumerate each; however, I shall single out a few. Many thanks are due the faithful staff and the Maybell-Richell photographers. But my most special thanks go to Mr. Ed Simpson and Mr. Jerry Wilson, our loyal and patient advisors. To many Sparta High School students, the BULLDOG is something mentioned when pictures of organizations and classes are taken and then forgotten until in the spring it bursts clean-covered upon them. The hundreds of pictures and thousands of words of copy are, to most students, a real but commonplace miracle. From time to time, we have all kept scrap books, diaries, or some form of mementos. A yearbook serves the same purpose as these. Each helps recall the past. This year’s BULLDOG was designed with this thought in mind. We have attempted, in a small way, to record the past year at S.H.S. A yearbook can be considered a mirror of the school it represents. I hope only that the image we have produced is a clear one and successfully portrays S.H.S. This year was basically the same as any other high school year; we studied, had fun, experienced sad moments of trial and error. There were games and dances. There were brief moments of glory for some in sports, musical and dramatic productions. All shared the inevitables—examinations and deadlines, the semester grades, the noontime cafeteria rush. These impressions are only a few that were packed into this full year. In years to come, if this book reminds you of some of the personal incidents and of the wonderful friendships and experiences that make high school the rewarding time it is, we shall be content, knowing we have fulfilled our purpose. Jean Ann Redpath Editor Dedication When we recall the highlights of our high school education, it will be to our instructors that we owe our greatest tributes. There is no final way to assess the worth of teachers except in terms of those they have taught. Our insight has been deepened, and our knowledge magnified by those who will forever remain bold in our memory. We are confident that we are destined to be better individuals for having known and worked under the guidance of Miss Miller and Miss Hood. Julio Touma lived with Linda and Bill Morgan from his-arrival in Feb- ruary until the end of school in May. Linda was an exchange student to Ecua- dor last summer. ‘Julio Zouma 21 faculty And Administration the Key to Knowledge 23 Mr. Carl Richardson- Principal Principal’s Message Some seventeen years ago you came into this world. Since then we have entered into a space age that only a decade ago would have been unbelievable. es, times change, but people don’t. The rules for living remain static. Those who live by these rules continue to be successful, perhaps not in material wealth, but more significantly in their relationships with other people. What are some of these time-tested rules? First of all, there is HONESTY. We must be honest with ourselves as well as with others. We must face our everyday problems realistically, and with confidence, and yet, realize our own limitations. Then there is LOYALTY. We should maintain loyalty to our church, our country and community, our employer, and our school. Finally, there is HARD WORK. Our country was not made great by those who put forth just enough effort to get by.” It is effort beyond the minimum demands of your teacher or your employer that turns the acceptable job into an excellent one. By following these simple rules of living you can help to carry the torch of progress through the coming years. Your education, whether in school or out, is just beginning. It is a process which will continue throughout your lives. Make your decisions wisely for each will help fashion your most priceless possession, your character. We are living in an age of rapidly accelerating technological change. Electronic digital computers can, in a few hours, out-perform a man’s lifetime of work. Automatiort is replacing workers by the hundreds of thousands. Jets and rockets have shrunk the earth to a small fraction of its former size, and all nations have become practically next door” neighbors. Sudden changes result in uncertainty and unrest. The challenge is great--the responsibilities are even greater. May God reward your efforts. 25 r i r-'W.Z ; wKjeTM , fi • ;y '• A1 k? ;._' ■ « 5 • ■■r- , , -v x '• . yWr. Clarence ft.
