CPre jKedics The Pre-Medics Organization seeks to in- fluence girls to choose a high school program that would give them as good a background as possible for entrance in a nursing school in prep- aration for a richly rewarding profession. Each year in early winter visits are made to two different St. Louis hospitals and nursing schools so that Pre-Medics members may see and learn from student nurses what school life is like. A tour in the spring is usually scheduled with a class studying an interest area associated with the medical profession. The Sparta Hospital offers a pre-nursing course in the spring to junior and senior girls having a high school grade average of C or above. The purpose of this course is to teach skills and fundamentals necessary for nurses' aides positions at hospitals and or nursing homes and to acquaint girls with a brief idea of what later nursing will be like. We experienced our first defeat through our fourth- place winning float, Can the Panthers. Despite attending the home games in the old cracker- box gym, we greatly enjoyed watching the conference and regional-winning basketball team. In the spring we visited Anna State Hospital with Mr. Carroll Belcher, our health teacher, and watched the track team win the conference for the first time in the history of our school. 1963- 64 As sophomores we returned to school with renewed enthusiasm as we were now on the second rung of the ladder. Our homecoming float, Time For a Victory, took third place--an im- provement over our Freshman year. The two-year-old baseball team won the conference title for the first time. When prom time came, we excelled as waiters and waitresses in spite of frayed nerves and pink sunbonnets. 1964- 65 At last! We were upper classmen with a certain amount of authority. There was so much to do: work in the stands at football and basketball games, decorate for homecoming (our float, Weed Out the Red Devils, took third), and finally, our first prom, Some Enchanted Evening. Through much hard work we achieved one of the most outstanding proms ever. Our castle in the clouds” was the main attraction with a large garden of artificial flowers in the center of the gym- 1965-66 Our last year. Being seniors was a truly different experience. As we were older we had to accept new responsibilities. We were heads of organizations and worked hard scholastically to prepare ourselves for college. Victory or Bust, our float, was unique in that it was drawn by only two horsepower. Graduation day came closer and closer. We were first measured for our caps and gowns; then we practiced for the baccalaureate and graduation exercises. Next we wrote our last high school semester exams and attended our last Prom. Finally, the day came. We left S. H. S. no longer green freshmen, but responsible young men and women. 102 Calvert 'frWifc- D. Young P. Landman M. Wittenborn G. Thies D. More Dockery C. Ohlau J.
