Introducing Your 1961 Yearbook THE BULLDOG Yearbook of — Sparta Township High School Sparta, Illinois The Annual Staff Foreword As the school year passes, we pause to catch a final glimpse of everything we have done. Our classmates, our friends, our teachers have all played a part in this, our senior year. We have attempted to preserve the memories through word and picture. You, the students of S.T. H. S., made it; you lived it. Here it is - the 1961 Bulldog. Board of Education MR. AUSTIN CAIRNS President of the Board DR. CURTIS L. TRAINER Principal MR. WILLARD STEVENSON MR. CHARLES E. CROUCH Administrative Assistant MR. LOWELL McCREE MR. LYLE MUHOLLAND (absent) REV. R. W. STEWART Secretary MR. LAWRENCE REID MR. GLENN COFFEE MR. LEO GROSS MR. JAMES A. BIRCHLER Assistant Principal One of the chief characteristics of modern civilization is its expanding conquest of nature. Modern man is exploring and subduing nature ceaselessly and successfully, uncovering new knowledge and creating new techniques and machines at an accelerating pace. The usher- ing in of this new technology is bringing con- tinual change in our way of life. Therefore one of the essentials for living in such a continual- ly changing society is for the individual him- self to be able to meet change. A society is composed of people, and a way of life of a people consists of the ideals, ideas, beliefs, ways of thinking, customs, and insti- tutions which the people have learned to value. These terms describe in essence the fundamen- tal concepts through which any one culture group hopes to promote the perfect society. However, we can never have a perfect society. Our Principal’S Message . . . we canonly approach it, and for us the near- 1 O est approach is contained in the one word democracy. To live in a complex democratic society such as ours, it is therefore obviously necessary that the individual receive not only a technological education but also have an understanding of the concepts upon which the so- ciety is predicated. The basic objectives of all the courses you have been pursuing has been to equip you with such information. A thorough knowledge in these two areas should enable you to find a suitable vocation and to become an efficient part of a democratic society, which is not only a privilege but also carries with it the re- sponsibility of being a participant. After leaving high school, you may attend college, or a vocational school, or you may go directly to a job. In any case, you will be further equipping yourself to meet change and to live in a complex democratic society. Your accomplishments will be directly related to how well you apply yourself to the task at hand. As stated previously, a society can never reach perfection. The same thing applies to you as an individual. However, only those who set perfection as an ultimate goal will continually make progress. As one approaches perfection, his horizons broaden and his vision becomes greater and therefore he continually moves upward and onward. In behalf of the faculty, the board of education, and myself, we extend our congratulations to you upon your having successfully completed high school and extend to you our best wishes for success in all your worthwhile endeavors. HELLO, STUDENTS OF S. T. H. S. Hard work means nothing to a hen. She just keeps on digging worms and laying eggs, regardless of what the business prognosticators say about the outlook for this or any other year. If the ground is hard, she scratches harder. If it is dry, she digs deeper. If it is wet, she digs where it is dry. If she hits a rock, she digs around it. If she gets a few more hours of daylight, she give up a few more eggs and digs a few hours longer. She always digs up worms and turns them into hard-shelled profits. I believe we can learn sometimes from the quotation about the hen. Work is an honorable thing. Sometimes I think we take too much for granted, such as our education and dem- ocratic form of government. It is necessary to work for a good education and the preservation of our democracy. It is my utmost desire to have all the students in the S.T.H.S. develop into dependable, reliable, respect- able, and well-educated citizens who will always be happy and well adjusted in their various walks of life. It has always been my intention to instill a kind of harmony and friendliness among the students which would accompany them when they graduate from high school. I feel that the education you receive here will be an asset in accepting your responsibility in the home, the community, and the nation. May your future be filled with success and happiness. put e Mayfly SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS LARRY BIRCHLER.....................President JERRY WALL.............................Vice President MARY JANE SYKES....................Treasurer PAT LOESING.......................Secretary LETHA MAE ADAMS FNA 2,3,4; FSA 3,4; FHA 1,2, 3,4; Annual Staff 4; AAU 1,2, 3,4; Pep Club 1.
