Sparta is fortunate in having as members of the Board of School Directors outstanding citizens who accept their important responsibility. They devote their time and efforts without remuneration except the satis- faction that an effective school program has been maintained. Twelve years ago when the class of '50 started their education there were ZOO on the roll, and progressing thru school many more have followed, until now in 1950, there are 350 on the roll. Due to this fact, an addition to the school is very necessary. Recognizing this, the school board is planning an addition to the building in the near future. The student body and the faculty wish to express their thanks and appreciation to the Board of Directors for their willing co-operation and progressive attitude toward the cause of education. Senior Class History 'Twas in the fall of old Hforty-fiVe,', Our freshman class began to jive. Twenty-eight on the roll, with the girls in the lead The boys were outnumbered, and much in need. A l-lallowe'en party with games old and new, Truth and consl, cootie, and post office too. 'Tis said that last game was enjoyed very much. Especially by peekers like Bub and Hutch. Next party was Christmas, and oh what a riot! We ate so much chili, We all had to diet. Remember that quaint little game, Let ,Er Fly ?', On Valentines Day it brought many a sigh. At Fralicks we said our farewell toast, In the form of a jolly Weiner roast. Now we were sophomores . . . Give us a hand. We gifted the fair with a prospering stand. All joined in to help in this pleasure, We came out on top and so did our treasure. The usual holiday parties were had, And parting that spring was very sad. Summer vacation had seemed very gay, But back to the homeport we came for a stay. That year at the fair we took prizes galore! Our float, our display, and even more. Now for some fun . . . Hurrayl Hurrayl We picked out a comical junior Play. It took us back to 'itham thar hills, With lots of ignorant, innocent spills. This is the story of our past, VVe're seniors now '... LeRoy Weidner -27- funior Class History 1947-48 Our freshman year was started with a comparatively small class. It grew even smaller when two of the fairer sex took their leave of absence from the class. Shirley Fralick moved to Bradford for reasons unknown. For Theresa Ayers romance was way ahead of education. This left our class with six girls and fourteen boys. Then the girls had a steak of luck as that hand- some, likeable Texan, Allen Greenfield came to town. By this time the boys were on the war path, and their cry was, f'We want more women. And I might add they meant every word of it. At the first of the year class officers were elected to direct the activities of the class as follows: President, Le Roy Weidner, Vice-President, Dolores Lindseyg Secretary, Virginia Rittenhouse, Treasurer, Wilma Burlingame. Up popped the excitement of the Sparta Fair, Cnever a dull momentj and with it the problem of a float. Everyone wracked his brain for a prize-winning idea. Finally, Leo Jackman Ca women's manj came up with the idea of a mock wedding. To make the theme a timely one the wedding was made a military affair with this placard: America Welcomes Her Alien Brides. This splendid suggestion, along with hours of manual labor, reaped a harvest of twenty dollars Qfirst prizej for our treasury. A large share of the success of this float was due to the experienced guidance of our home-room teacher, Miss Margaret Morris. We had our Halloween party at school, for it was impossible for every one to attend at night. As for Christmas, it was decided that we would have our party in the afternoon to eliminate studying. To complete our freshman year We held a weiner roast at the home of Miss Margaret Morris. A warm fire, games, home made ice cream and a Weiner roast made this party a very memorable occasion. When it was time to leave Qlet's not mention the timej everyone parted with deep regret. fOr did they?j 1948-49 The following September, after everyone had wandered in from the surrounding hills and the heads were counted, the class was saddened to find one of their most likeable girls missing. Virginia Rittenhouse had decided to attend Colestock High in Titusville. The class got off to a good start by the election of the following officers: President, Lyle Van Tassel, Vice-President, james Weidner, Secretary, Wilma Burlingame, Treasurer, Eleanor Yager. The Fair and the Sophomore Pie and Coffee Stand is the next important event in the class history. The co-operation of everyone made it a financial success. Everything went smoothly until Halloween. Gaylord Northrop in- vited the class to his home for the occasion. The party was enjoyed by all, with Qburp! pardon mej everyone leaving happy. Then came Valentines Day with another party. Sophomore Class History From all of us to all of you We wish to write this script anew. To save you grief, We'll make it brief, And hope it holds your interest, too. Fair-time came ,round with all its pleasures. To make much cash we took great measures. We had a pie stand, The best in the land. Our coffee and cream was one of lifeis treasures. Now we must not forget our boys' team, 'Cuz those guys are sure right on the beam. Thru thick and thru thin, We'll help ,em to win, For we're proud of these lads to extreme. That's that for the team, now on to the next: 'Round Halloween time we laid down our texts, We planned a hayride, Learned this on the side: To buy cider by barrels, and donuts by pecks. In December so festively gay, O, Where might a party hold sway? Not a soul seemed to know VVhere thirty-four ought to go, For an evening to have right of way. The problem was solved by Miss Morris, Into her home she did pour us The house shook with our laughter. Was that loud bang a rafter? Ah, noi Twas just thirty-four voices in chorus. That's the end of our theme, but not of our story, We'l1 tell you again next year of our glory! So for us don't pine, Like a star we will shine. just watch us lead Sparta to vict'ry! Gall with six lettermen returning from the 1948-49 season. During the early weeks of practice, Glenn Cook accidently fractured his left arm. The boys got off to a good start, but fell back in early league competition. After Christmas vacation they came back strong to give the league leaders a scare in many close ball games. Because of so many sophomores on the team, 1950 must be looked upon as a year of building and developing for the future. Coach Gall was constantly changing the starting line-up in ani attempt to find the best possible combination. The Jones boys with Ronald scoring' 167 pts. and Donald close behind with 161 pts. paced the team in the scoring column in the 21-game season. The team loses only one man for next year, With the benefit of this year's experience and with further development of individual co-ordination and team play, we believe that the next few years will be very bright for Spartansburg Basketball followers. Of these, only two boys had had any previous competitive experience. Most games were played against older and more experienced players on the opposing teams. As the season progressed, the new coach and the new players became better acquainted, and the results began to show on the court. The boys missed the Junior High tournament by dropping a playoff game to Pleasantville. Blakeslee and Carter were standouts during the 19 game schedule. The entire team returns to junior' high competition next year and the boys hope to reverse this year's won-lost record of four and fifteen. This year Sparta High School started out with a peippy squad of cheerleaders consisting of three girls and three boys. The enthusiasm of this squad throughout the basketball season stimulated the spirits of both the team and the spectators. The squad suffered the loss of Leo Jackman, one of its peppiest members near the end of the season. However, all anticipate his return next year, peppier than ever. The cheerleaders were chosen on a competitive basis and have proven themselves a Worthy asset to the school. -4g- Acthfitigg J S , fr Q ' Z . ff Q H ' gl f m 155- ' 'Q 4 Annu. ln .pr A Af't::' gee .5 5' uh m- v- -' - . Our first job Was to plan for the Community Fair and prepare the barn and the gym for displays. This we did very well under the supervision of Mr. Bailey. We also sold ice cream at the fair. We went to the County Fair at Meadville and took part in the judging contest. As hunting season approached, We formed two teams for a game contest. Mr. Gall's team lost and had to make arrangements for the game supper, which was prepared and served by the F. H. A. girls. The fathers of the members were honored guests and neighboring game wardens were the featured speakers. The next event which interested us was the State Farm Show at Harrisburg. A group' of five, who were selected on the basis of scholastic standing, attended this for a Week. Seed selling and preparations for Parent. and Son Banquet were the main activities of the Spring. -51.. We're sure everyone noticed the cute burlap bags representing tunics worn by the pledges during initiation. The final rites were held at a mysterious gathering in the school building. After an enjoyable meal of the remains of Gullible Guss, the new members were draped in togas and in a solemn candle light ceremony officially making them patriachs or Roman citizens. Our annual Roman banquet was held in the midst. of Christmas festivities at the home of Magister, Margaret Morris. The evening was typically Roman, carrying out the old Roman customs. We believe we can safely say that No one went home hungry! Til next year . . . Their duties were maintaining order in the loading and unloading of buses, and also aiding the driver While the buses are in mot1on They were on duty at all group activities of the school including movies basketball games, assemblies, and cafeteria periods.
