SPENCER BEEBE DEDICATIO We, the students of Sparta High, 'are proud to dedicate the 1954 Spartan to the doctors of our community. This is done in appreciation of their wonderful skill of healing and their bountiful, 'assured generosity in giving their services anytime of day or night in any weather or occasion. We also recognize in these fine men all the virtues of citizenship, sports- manship, and friendliness which we admire. They serve as a goal for which all students eamestly strive. It is with much pride and admiration that we dedicate this issue of the Spartan to our doctors. DR. ARTHUR HARRIS DR. HARRY MANNIS '53 2 is Avg DR. EDWARD LUKASEK Dli. JACK BROWN DH. BRUCE The resignation of Mr. Bruce as Superintendent of the Sparta school system, 'a position which he has held for the past nineteen years, brought a feeling of re- gret to the students of Sparta High. His initiative and activity had become so much a part of the school life, that he has served as a fine example of education- al ability and leadership to the students. Mr. Bruce graduated from Appleton High School in 1911 and from Lawrence College in 1915. He also did post graduate work and in 1926 received his Mas- ter's degree in Education at the University of Wisconsin. Although he started as an instructor, he showed continued progress in the administration field. He also has been active in the military service. During World War I he was a sergeant in the 32nd division stationed in Europe. Mr. jBruce has held many offices in educational and civic organizations. Since 1946 he has been a member of the Board of Control of the Wisconsin Inter-schol- astic 'Athletic Association. Several honorary educational memberships have been bestowed upon him. He is also an active member of the Camp McCoy Public Relations Committee. The students of Sparta High express their sincere thanks to his devoted ser- vice and wish him every happine ss in the future. ' 40999: rf-aa ,, , ,, , ,, , , , aa p , rv 7? The Pep Club boasts the largest membership of any organization in Sparta High. The leaders this year are: President - Joann Neubergerg Vice-President - Lynne Petersong Secret ary-Treasurer - Sandra Fox. Mrs. Hanson is the advisor of our organization. The activities of the Pep Club are to arrange the pep meetings during the football and basketball season. Several times this year we held yell sessions in the hall at noon to take the place of a pep meeting. Pep Club plans the Homecoming pep-rally each year. A clever skit Dragnet was presented during this rally. The float which the Pep Club entered in the Homecoming parade was called We'll Skunk Viroqua. To earn money we had several Three C's Sale' - cookies, -candies, and cake. We sponsored the first ,dance and sold programs at the football games. We would like to thank all the girls who have contributed their time in making the Pep Club successful! We feel special thanks should be given to Mary Jane Zepplin who is head of the Planning Committee and to Rita Leverich, -who has given her time selling programs at our football games. Jlevsett. Last year after a school- wide campaign, the student body elected Nlarlenelsensee as president, Kay lleineck as vice-president and .-Xnne lilcfloy as secretary. At its first meeting the Council elected Vary l,ee lirocliman to the position of reporter. 'l'he Council has been fomied on the philosophy that the democratic nature ol' education should extend into as many school activities as is practical and that the best way to learn democratic procedure is to practice it. The objectives in accor- with this philosophy are to provide a stu- dent forum for the expression of student opinion, to provide ground for leaders, to provide a laboratory for citizenship, to promote closer student-teacher relation- ship, to promote a feeling of responsibility for the school welfare, and to provide a clearing house for student activities. 'l he Student Council is representative of the entire school. Each class is entitled to two representatives and each organiza- tion to one. This year they sponsored a bulletin hoard in the main hall, conducted a survey pertaining to traffic in the'halls, obtained a gift for retiring janitor Fred ' A d the S ring Carnival S'l1 V . Barlow, J. Rasmussen, J. Mohring, S. Nelson, A. Nichols, S. Williams. SEVENTH GR DE HI TORY A few days after school started the seventh grade began to settle down to the unfamiliar routine of Junior High. With Mrs. Abrahamson and Miss Lee serving as class advisors, -they elected the following as class officers: Frederick Crook and Richard Johnson presidents, Gary Northup and Micheal Finn, vice-presidents, Hay Wong and Wanda Erickson, -secretaries, and Jimmy McMullin and Willard Schowalter, treasurers. About a week before Christmas we had our first evening party in the lunchroom. There were refreshments, dancing and exchange of gifts. We all had a wonderful time and are looking forward to our next party. The afternoon before the Nekoosa football game the Junior High put on the pep meeting which was a take off of the high school pep meeting and game. We are very proud of our basketball team and cheerleaders who added their share of enthusi- asm to the games. For our project this year we are writing a history of Sparta. We have assigned the work to committees. Among the most interesting activi- ties is interviewing businessmen and citizens who have been residents for many years lll our city. We have enjoyed our first year of Junior High and are looking forward to coming back again next year. t EIGHTH GR DE HISTORY The '54- ' eighth grade class entered these familiar halls looking forward to their last year in junior high. With the assistance of the advisors, Mr. Habe and Mr. Guith, the officers for the eighth grade were elected as follows: Presidents, Gary Tourville and Lowell Crook, Vice-presidents, Elaine Cur- tis and Jeanine Whiteheadg Secretaries, Carol Janes and Rosalie Torkelsong Trea- surers, Dick Lambert and Bill Owens. Our Student Council representatives werejeanine Whitehead and David Harris. We have two students representing us in first band and several students in second band. Our float slogan for the Homecoming Parade was 'Teach Viroqua a Lesson.' We didn't win a prize but we enjoyed decor- ating it anyway. The seventh and eighth grades combined have organized a basketball team under the coaching of Mr. Guith. Although our cheerleaders, along with the fine cheering section, did their share in boosting the team, they couldn't seem to conquer a victory. In two games with Viro- qua the scores were 24-34 and 32-39, the Tomah Indians were also victorious with a score of 23-46. We would like to thank our teachers for our very successful years in Junior High, and we are looking forward to next ,yearwhen we will return to Sparta High as freshmen. Colonel Blair has died and the Hide 'lim llard Dude Ranch is without an owner as no will has been found. Larry Benson, the adopted son of the Colonel, declares that the dying man mentioned making a will. Into this setting of mystery and suspicion comes Lettie Blair, the Colonel's niece from Ver- mont, and some of her girl companions to be guest Dudines at the llanch. Lettie is made aware early of the feud between Larry and Jack Guldy, the ranch manager. She learns too, that the Colonel had planned, had he lived, to induce Lettie to visit the ranch and try to marry her off to Larry. The will is forgotten and as in all operettas. love finds a way and all ends happily. lx lleineck D Schroeder C Leverich, P. Harrison J. Lehman, L.
