With the appreciated help of our class advisors - Mrs. Ken- neth Anthony, Mr. Moore, Mr. Hoeft, Mr. Jindrick, and Mr. Wedderkop - we participated in the homecoming parade enter- ing two floats. The one for our class was entitled Lettuce Beet Nekoosa and our history class chose Up An Atom for its title. We also had many students participating in various activi- ties - band, chorus, sports, and forensics. From our class came two of the cheerleaders - Lylia Heath and Sonja Hove - who have held this position for three years. Jane Van Antwerp and Anita Young were chosen to attend the queen and helped to reign over the Homecoming Ceremonies and the Homecoming Game. At the beginning of the year we held our class election and chose Roger Hutson as 'Class President and Prom King, and Jack Harr, Sonja Hove, and Lynne Peterson as Vice-President, Treasurer, and Secretary respectively. , M -Xi J QM- , an N cf,0!oiomoz' ff , . OPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY On September 2, the class of '55 returned to the halls of Sparta High, still having the largest enrollment of 153. Our advisors who assisted us through our second year were Miss Behrens, Miss Hartfield, Miss Wruck, Miss Decker, Mr. Sladky, Mr. Wheeler, and Miss Weller. We found' ourselves well satisfied with the following officers: Jean Berry as president, Kenny Anderson as vice-president, Mary Brockman as secretary, and Kay Heineck as treasurer. Our class was well represented in extra-curricular activities such as band, chorus, forensics, and sports. From our class came two of the cheerleaders sewing their first year - Jerry Hiliker and Karol Erickson. K , Q ,X A .L -5,4 Q 1 1- vi' S 5. ..... ' be-'IIN' S m if ,fi Q Ng HK' SNK fff. I HISTGRY OE THE EIGHTI-I GRADE We all remember the days back in second and third grade when we wished we were 'big high school kids so we could boss other little kids around. And also how we were gonna be teachers and be real mean and make the kids learn the tables up to the 70's. But that's all over now and we sorta wish we could do it again. Looking back on the Junior High days the eighth graders realize that they were among the most fun. Take, for instance our first seventh grade party. The boys were stiff and uneasy first but we all had a good time. In our first class meeting we felt awkward, being new to the fomrality and often there were moments of uneasy silence when Mrs Aberhamson came to the rescue. We chose Peggy Winskowski, presi- dent, Judy Matson, vice president, Pat Solverson, sec- retary, and Jerry Olson, treasurer. There were other parties and dances and they all were successful. Our first party in the eighth grade was a masquerade for Halloween. Everyone came in costume and the lunchroom saw sights to remember. There were tramps, ladies of state, cowboys, and of course witches, ghosts, and spooks. Prizes were awarded for the funniest and this gave the judges a hard time. Instead of the mess of cleaning up after the lunch, we all brought money, and faccompanyed by Mr. and Mrs. Babe to avoid the curfewl we went uptown to eat. This was very successful. This year we chose Bob Spink, president, Susie Faucett, vice president, Sally Erickson, secretary, and Gary Helgeson, treasurer. Gary seems to enjoy his job and he even voted for himself. He will make a good bill collector when he gets out of high school. We also went out for cheerleading, but although we taught the seventh graders how, only eighth graders were chosen. The competition was keen towards the end but the judges finally chose Betty Jenkins, Diane Radde, Diane Olson, and Judy Matson. As for the pep meeting, which we all are proud of I heard things going around in low tones about the skit being acted by only seventh graders. After we saw it we realized that they did just as well, if not better than we could have done. By the way, hats off to Dr. Harris for providing us with the medical terms. The Junior High has also taken an active part in the band. They have organized their own band- and a few are in first band. There would be more in first band if they had free periods first hour. And so, as we go forward with this little memorandum in mind, there will be a little 'soft spot' in the hearts of all the eighth graders for the Junior High. When the teachers come to school some fine morning and find the fumiture changed 'or cupboard cleaned they will know that it's not entirely out of mischievousness that we do it but that the little soft spot' has been acting up. 5, I fiixf. fi? , 4 . ,f Q fp, g Y X, fu ' f QM if SEVE TH GRADE J H After a long summer of camping, swimming and outdoor fun, 61 seventh graders trudged up the stairs eager to meet the new seventh grade teachers. It was hard at first but after the first six weeks we became familiar with the junior high activities. The seventh grade advisors, Miss Lee and Mrs. Abraham- son led the students through the following election: Bob Weitzel and Bill Owenvpresidents: Dick Lambert and Ann Bjerke-vice-presidents: Mary Laxton and Karen Christensen- treasurers: Marion Barlow andJeanineWhitehead-Secretaries. About the second day of school we chose our partners and lockers. The next day we were issued our locks. We all enjoy the convenience of having lockers very much for this is our first year of having them. Page Sponsor KRE4AMER'S MEAT MARKET MANNIS 81 HARRIS, MRS. Before the Christmas vacation our seventh grade had a party in which we played games and had refreshments such as coke and cake, fudge and sandwiches. I am quite sure that everyone had a good time, and we hope we can have another one. On January 27, before the Black River Falls - Sparta basketball game, our junior high sponsored the pep meeting. Our master of ceremonies was Ronnie Bye. Two of our class, David Harris and Marshall Brynildson put on the skit. Our junior high has four cheerleaders of whom we are very proud. We appreciate the teachers' cooperation in making our first year of junior high a successful one and we are look- ing forward to another big step in knowledge next year. We have had to keep our papers and pictures in Miss Weller's office because of lack of space. Trying to meet the deadline so that we received the annual before graduation created a problem, but everyone worked hard and I guess we made it. Mr. DeGracie and Miss Weller both did their part in getting the pictures on time. Someone worked every Tuesday and Thursday evenings and there was a weekly meeting during the activity period. The Spartan organization sponsored .the Post Prom dance April 27th. Other than this the activities were limited be- cause of the amount of work that had been done to finish the job. Miss Weller was faculty advisor and Nancy Herr- man served as editor. Class editors and the other editors were chosen by the advisor. HOW ONE: ll. Leverich, C. Jenkins, N. Humble, J. The student council has been formed on the philosophy that the democratic nature of education should extend into as many school activities as is practical and that the best way to learn defnocratic procedure is to practice it. The objectives in accordance with the philoso- phy are - to provide a student forum for the expression of student opinion, to provide ground for leaders, to provide a laboratory for citizenship, to promote closer student- teacher cooperation, to promote a feeling of responsibility for the school welfare, and to provide a clearinghouse for the student activities. Areas of control for the student council include such activities as - control over elections, better sportsman- ship, and promotion of interest in activities other than sports. The student council also shares some responsi- bility with the faculty such as selecting assembly pm- grams and planning some of the major events of the year. The band plays for all school dances after games, etc. Plans are being made for an exchange dance with Wis- consin Dells. ln the early spring the band is planning to take a two-day trip either to Milwaukee or Minneapolis. The organization's membership this year includes eight seniors. This year the Hungry 5 consists of seven members, so the saying goes 'that two of them aren't hungry. The setting of this three-act comedy is the home of Martin Vanderhof, just around the corner from Columbia University. The living room looks like everyman-for-him- self, for it is here that meals are eaten, plays written, snakes collected, ballet steps practiced, xylophones played, printing presses operated - if there were room enough, there would probably be ice skating. Martin You Can? Take It With You nry mistake. Her eldest daughter, Essie Carmichael, is most interested in .Russian ballet but finds that the sale of her candy brings in a solid income at the present. Her husband, Ed, prints signs for each box of her candy. His latest, GOD IS THE STATE, STATE lS GOD, brings trouble. Mr. De Prinna and Paul Sycamore use the basement for theirlaboratory to perfect a sky rocket. An explosion brings unexpected complications. Alice, 21, is nearest rational of any of the Sycamores, yet she is very loyal to her family of individualists. Her love for Tony, son of the socially prominent Kirbys, is subjugated to the caprice of her family's hobbies. The arrival of the Kirbys one day too early at a dinner to announce the engagement of Tony and Alice almost results in a riot. As the curtain closes Grandpa Vanderhof offers a prayer of thanksgiving. Vanderhof, grandfather of the brood, goes about the bus- iness of living in the fullest sense. He has some trouble with the Federal Government. lt seems that he has never paid his income taxes. His special interest is in attending commencement exercises at, Columbia University. His daughter, Mrs. Penny Sycamore, is writing her eleventh play. Her interest in writing originated with the delivery of a portable typewriter to her home some five years ago I wt TT T 40 av ? 'M' S 'hi il . . 'Q 9 offs' A -in L 5 swf?
