Class of I947 lt was in the fall of '43 that we first wandered into the dense forest of learning --the high school. We soon saw the need of having leaders to cut a way for us through the underbrush, so we chose as our President, Stuart Coffman, Vice President, Sue Cochran, Secretary, Bob Goodman, Treasurer, Phyllis MacMullin, and Spartan Staff Representative, Donovan Fisher. We began at once to blaze a trail by entering some of our members in almost every organization in the school. Ten of us even made senior band. The second year found us firmly established. Our original leaders were relieved by Ephraim Johnson, Doris Ninneman, Mary Leverich, Bill Willgrubs, and Stuart Coff- man holding offices in the order listed above. By this time we more than held our own in senior band, and Mary Flood and Stuart Coffman became members of the Swing Band. Athletic letters were awarded to Ephraim Johnson, Dean Habel, Donavon Fish- er, Charles Campbell, and Dave James. In the field of forensics, five sophomores re- presented the Alma Mater in the contest in Tomah. Doris Ninneman and Bob Good- man reigned as Queen and King of the Winter Carnival. Thus the close of another full year found us in the middle of the forest. It seemed that everyone in the Junior Class was in some way connected with the spring Prom. Dave James, our President, ruled in state at this gala affair. Charles Campbell and Jean Hanson held the offices below his, and John Reukauf served as Spartan representative. For our class play we chose BROTHER GOOSE, which we presented on November 6, 1945. We were now represented on the basketball 5 by Dave James. Several of our number served as officers in the various organizations of the school. Delores Rasmussen and Donovan Fisher were the Junior members on the student council in charge of the youth center. We swelled the ranks of the Letter- manfs Club by adding twenty-one Juniors active in various sports. At the forensic meet held in Viroqua in March, Doris Olsen and Stuart Coffman re- ceived A's, and represented Sparta High at the contest in La Crosse. We now had but one lap of our journey left to complete, and we faced our final year with radiant con- fidence. ' When the valiant seniors rebanded in the fall of '46, we elected Dave Sullivan as our President. Margaret McCoy became Vice President, Mary Flood, Secretary, Phil Tichenor, Treasurer, and Madge Morgan, Spartan Staff Representative. Through the American Problems classes interest was fostered in organizing a Co-operative Student Council, of which Stuart Coffman became the president, At the Forensic meet in La Crosse Sue Hill rated an A, and so was entitled to represent Sparta High inthe state contest at Madison. Jean Hanson was elected Homecoming Queen, and Dean Habel, the football captain, reigned as King. Mostof the schoolfs activities found leadership in the senior class: Spartan, Ephraim Johnson, Communique, Donna Newburgg Basketball, Dave James, Track, Bob Salmon, Hi-Y, Donovan Fisher, Pep Club, M'ary Flood, G. R., Doris Olsen, and G. A, A., Shirley Peterson. WHAT A LIFE was chosen as the Senior Class play, and was presented in the early part of May. Thus it was that another triumphant band emerged from the forest of knowledge into the clearing called The Future, educated through our success and failures to make a brighter tomorrow. ' 16
