1191 Xurihug H 'Xi 'Q Hum A S Editor--Ephraim Johnson Business Manager-Tom Taylor Advisor-A. E. Weiner 2 M 1947 3 Dedication The students of Sparta High School take great pleasure in dedicating the 1947 Spartan to Mrs. Esther Hanson. She has unselfishly given of her time and effort in order that we may become the kind of citizens, of whom our com- munity Will be proud. We make this dedication in recognition of her excel- lent guidance and leadership in the classroom as Well as in extra-curricular activities. 4 . In Recognition Sparta High suffered a loss when Ralph Mantzke drop- ped out of school last Fall but We feel that the Seniors loss is the Juniors' gain. 5 Our targei is tomorrow Our arrow is today Senior Class 1947 6 Introduction With the completion of our high school education, We present this annual to you. We hope that it will be a re- minder of the many memories that we will retain from our high school days. We've 'tried to preserve for you some of the highlights of the past year, that we feel you will cherish always. 7 lst ROWAAR. Chapin, Secretaryg G. Tourville, F. Wendorf, Vice Presidentg Dr. D. C. Beebe. 2nd Row-Wm. Benedict, Presidentg W. R. Bruce, Superintendent. The Board of Education We are fortunate to have on our board men of keen interest in our Welfare, We appreciate their many hours of work and the hardships they have endured to give to us a very excellent opportunity to prepare ourselves to bepgood citizens and an asset to our community. 8 The morale of every institution depends upon team work. Team work can be achieved only through the co- operative contribution of each student. The character of your school depends upon leadership, loyalty and coopera- tion, prideiin accomplishment, and personal and intellect- ual honesty. So act and speak that the Spartan S shall fly honorably and high. 9 Seniors every year are confronted with the problem of shifting from a four year course of well planned and Well guided instruction to a different course, one of self decision and self reliance. It will be a true test of your ability to solve the problems you meet, It will be your test of how Well you adjusted yourself to the problems of your high school days. In order to meet the challenges of the future success- fully you must use the knowledge you have gained during your school days. The job has not been completedand will not be, until you can show to the community and to your country that you have learned to be a real citizen and an asset to yourself, your family, and your community. 10 We express our thanks to Miss Wagner for helping us during our four years of High School. She has been faith- ful to us in trials of every kind. p We are very grateful to the office girls for their fine Work. They have given up their free periods to make our school system more efficient. 11 E. J. Blewett-Y-Platteville S. T. C.-Manual Arts. Ruth PeterscngStevens Point S. T. C.- Univ. Of Wis.-B. June, S. Coffman, D. Fisher. Standing-Mr. Weiner. Student Council The 5th hour American Problems Class got busy one day and decided that we should have a Student Council . After obtaining all possible information from existing student councils, they submitted their findings to the school and a vote was taken by student body. By far the majority was in favor of it. There a constitutional com- mitte drew up a constitution and a school wide election was held for representatives to the Council. The results were as follows: Q President ...... ..... S tuart Coffman Vice President -- ..... Douglas June Secretary ...... ...-. D uane Fisher Treasurer ........... ............ B ill Harrie Other representatives are: Dave Sullivan, John Sullivan, Donna Newburg, John Wall, Mary Flood, Chuck Campbell, Pat Peters, Pat Loverude, John Herring, Frances Sullivan, Sally Kellar, Joyce Swingle, Richard Hedrick, and John Dutton. Since its organization, the student council has helped the faculty and the students alike by drawing up a set of rules pertaining to conduct of students, dealing with conduct problems and generally lightening the load of the office and giving the stud- ents a voice in their government. C 14 Classes Class of I947 lt was in the fall of '43 that we first wandered into the dense forest of learning --the high school. We soon saw the need of having leaders to cut a way for us through the underbrush, so we chose as our President, Stuart Coffman, Vice President, Sue Cochran, Secretary, Bob Goodman, Treasurer, Phyllis MacMullin, and Spartan Staff Representative, Donovan Fisher. We began at once to blaze a trail by entering some of our members in almost every organization in the school. Ten of us even made senior band. The second year found us firmly established. Our original leaders were relieved by Ephraim Johnson, Doris Ninneman, Mary Leverich, Bill Willgrubs, and Stuart Coff- man holding offices in the order listed above. By this time we more than held our own in senior band, and Mary Flood and Stuart Coffman became members of the Swing Band. Athletic letters were awarded to Ephraim Johnson, Dean Habel, Donavon Fish- er, Charles Campbell, and Dave James. In the field of forensics, five sophomores re- presented the Alma Mater in the contest in Tomah. Doris Ninneman and Bob Good- man reigned as Queen and King of the Winter Carnival. Thus the close of another full year found us in the middle of the forest. It seemed that everyone in the Junior Class was in some way connected with the spring Prom. Dave James, our President, ruled in state at this gala affair. Charles Campbell and Jean Hanson held the offices below his, and John Reukauf served as Spartan representative. For our class play we chose BROTHER GOOSE, which we presented on November 6, 1945. We were now represented on the basketball 5 by Dave James. Several of our number served as officers in the various organizations of the school. Delores Rasmussen and Donovan Fisher were the Junior members on the student council in charge of the youth center. We swelled the ranks of the Letter- manfs Club by adding twenty-one Juniors active in various sports. At the forensic meet held in Viroqua in March, Doris Olsen and Stuart Coffman re- ceived A's, and represented Sparta High at the contest in La Crosse. We now had but one lap of our journey left to complete, and we faced our final year with radiant con- fidence. ' When the valiant seniors rebanded in the fall of '46, we elected Dave Sullivan as our President. Margaret McCoy became Vice President, Mary Flood, Secretary, Phil Tichenor, Treasurer, and Madge Morgan, Spartan Staff Representative. Through the American Problems classes interest was fostered in organizing a Co-operative Student Council, of which Stuart Coffman became the president, At the Forensic meet in La Crosse Sue Hill rated an A, and so was entitled to represent Sparta High inthe state contest at Madison. Jean Hanson was elected Homecoming Queen, and Dean Habel, the football captain, reigned as King. Mostof the schoolfs activities found leadership in the senior class: Spartan, Ephraim Johnson, Communique, Donna Newburgg Basketball, Dave James, Track, Bob Salmon, Hi-Y, Donovan Fisher, Pep Club, M'ary Flood, G. R., Doris Olsen, and G. A, A., Shirley Peterson. WHAT A LIFE was chosen as the Senior Class play, and was presented in the early part of May. Thus it was that another triumphant band emerged from the forest of knowledge into the clearing called The Future, educated through our success and failures to make a brighter tomorrow. Photography The aim of photography in Special Activity is to give the students a general idea of the underlying principles of photography. They were first taught the art of making prints from their own negatives, including the development, fixing and mounting process. Secondly-they were given the principles of composition which were discussed and illustrated by many samples of photographs. The class was also taken outdoors and shown the importance of proper lighting, the selection of proper subjects, background and composition. Oil coloring was also demonstrated to enable the students to tint their own prints. The theory of light and its practical application to the use of filters and the differ- ent types of lenses were demonstrated. The laboratory was darkened and the method of making enlargements shown. The advantages of projection apparatus in connection with miniature camera slides was illustrated by means of a small 35 mm. projection. V Pictures were brought in daily for criticism. Many pictures were entered in the Eastman Kodak picture contest. This class was attended by 40 students from every class. It was taught very ably by Mr. Osborne. After much dif- ference of opinion, the Juniors lin- ally decided on the theme of Deep Purple . The gym'was transformed into J an old-fashioned garden with a cefling of deep purple studded with silver stars, to lit in with the strains T t'When the deep purple falls over sleepy garden walls and the stars began to twinkle in the sky--3, The walls were latticed with white crepe paper with colorful artificial flowers en- twined in the lattice work. In one corner was a rock garden set off by a white picket fence. In the rock garden were flowers and two artificial trees cleverly arranged. This was topped off by two fountains spraying' colored water over lilies and tiny frogs. In another corner behind a picket fence with a swinging gate was a flower bedeck- ed arbor and a bird bath with a stuffed robin perched on its brim. ln this scene the object of special interest was the realistic, old-fashioned wishing well. Punch was served along the side of the garden wall with a background of yellow daffodils. White picket fences with a hollyhock border enclosed the punch stand, Bobbie Bryan's orchestra played from an elevated platform, against a background of purple and white with yellow tulips. Various types of flowers were arranged through- out the gym in a garden-cart and on the windows and walls. The traditional Grand March was led by King Dave Bernett, with Bette Rasmussen as his Queen. The decorations this year were headed by Pat Peters, under the su- pervision of Miss Bjork. Don Harris was the chairman of the Orchestra Committee, with Mr. Jindrick as ad- visor. Phyllis Thurston was chair- man of the Invitation Committee and Greta Hove was chairman of the Programs under Miss Jenson. The T Refreshments Committee headed by l Sally Kellar with Miss sraskai as V A l faculty advisor. Mr. Kube was gen- eral chairman of the Prom. The COMMUNIQUE is printed bimonthly by the staff. A room was given to the COMMUNIQUE this year, making the paper a more permanent part of the school. The Future Farmer Organization is different from other school organizations in that it continues during the summer months. Last year, as a prelude to work, a trip to Chicago was planned, In Chicago, 26 members visited points of interest. In the short period of three days we learned a great deal about large cities. Later in the summer we had several boys participating in the showing of ani- mals at the Monroe County and State Fair and the La Crosse Fair. Some of the ex- hibitors were Kenneth and Roger Williams, George Olson, James- and Morgan Wells, Dean Ruedy and Lynn Merow. It proved a very profitable and enjoyable experience for most of the boys. Two Chapter boys also won the Monroe County Dairy Judging Contest. They were Kenneth Williams and George Olson, lst and 2nd respectively. In winning this honor they represented M0nroe.County in the State Fair where they again won lst and 2nd. This work was the climax of our summer's work as far as Farming Programs were concerned. In September we as Chapter members welcomed the greenhands into our organ- ization, and aimed our goals for the school year. Our first official meeting was held Oct. 5 with all new officers presiding. At the President's desk was Phillip Tichenor, the Vice President's desk Donald Thurston, the Secretary's desk George Olson, the Treasurer's desk Richard Schauf and at the Sentinel's stand Donald Hansen. In October four members exhibited animals at the Eau Claire Fat Stock Show. They were James and Morgan Wells, Kenneth Williams, George Olson. The Chapter also participated in the Kickapoo Valley Corn Husking and Livestock Judging Contest. The three judges representing our Chapter won second place. These judges were Rich- ard Shauf, Dean Ruedy and Morgan Wells. The Corn Huskers won lst place in the contest. They were Phillip Gajewsky and George Olson. ' The Annual Parent and Son Banquet was the next important event on our calen- dar. There were 48 members present with their parents. Bronze pins were awarded to the Green Hands, Emblems were awarded to Chapter Farmers. On March 14 our Chapter was represented in the District FFA Quartet and Public Speaking Contest. Our orator, Phillip Tichenor received first place, and Quartet con- sisting of Farrel Sousek, Donald Hansen, Donald Fitting and Gordon Ornes also re- ceived first place. For the close of the school year we have placed upon our calendar the Annual FFA picnic held in May. Committees have been appointed to plan a trip to Yellowstone National Park, where we hope to travel this summer. 43 Safety Patrol The White Sam Browne belt and badge worn by each member of the Sparta Safety Patrol boys is a recognized symbol to motorists all over the United States. To motorists this symbol means Drive with care and caution, because children are crossing traffic lanes here. Each school day throughout the year at dismissal time both noon and evening the boys pictured above have kept a watchful eye and guided student traffic across the busyintersections surrounding the Sparta City Schools. Regardless of weather conditions, they have been on duty, schcol flag in hand. Their watchful vigilance of your child's safety goes on cffciently and it is hopedithat it may always be so. At the close of each school year the Safety Division of the Motor Ve-- hicle Department of the State of Wisconsin awards each member of the patrol with a certificate of honor for service in safety. The certificate is signed by the governor of the state. Hi-Y The Hi-Y started the year 0E with a series of speakers who told the members about different experiences they had in past' years. The mem- bers Were very interested, and this procedure kept the meetings quite lively. Among the speakers were the Rev. Morgan, Pink Rice and others. All members who desired, purchased pins, and it will no doubt lead to a permanent investiture and initiation program in the future. 44 SAFETY PATROL Back Row-John Chapin, Earl Nelson, Dean Benedict, Douglas Gudbaur, Mr. Hughes. Through the Youth Center, it was able to exchange a dance with the Logan Swing Band. Logan played at our Youth Center for a formal which was held in February. In return, the Sparta Swing Band furnished music for their St. Patrick's party at the Logan High School, The Swing Band was also represented at numerous banquets, including several which were held at the Sidney Hotel for various organizations of Sparta. It played for the high school agricultural banquet. Thanks goes to Mr. Jindrick for his keen direction, and helpfulness . The organization considers this year as successful a one, as it was eventful. 52 Concert Band This year Mr. Jindrick gave the down beat as the band led the Homecoming Parade, maneuvers at football and basketball games, pep assembly, concerts at Christ- mas, Spring and the Tournament, plus other activities which needed band music to arouse the school spirit. After a few months of school we found the band in quite a different atmosphere. All Was quiet in the gym. Seventy musicians and the director, in concert formation, were aroused into playing a lively march in their new band room. After the tense- ness had disappeared the band proceeded with their regular rehearsal for the big tasks of the year, the Spring Concert and the Tournament at La Crosse. 53 Top Row-Donald Brower, Douglas Fanning, Gerald Randall, John Quinn, Terry Dwyer. This play, the original Henry Aldrich script, provided a round of merriment and excitement both for the principals of the cast and the audience. The plot concerned the problems of Henry, a high school student with himself, his teachers, his superintendent, his mother, and his fellow student, George Bigelow. Henry just couldn't live up to his family's expectations as a student and so had to cheat in order to pass his Roman history exam with highest mark in the class, instead of winning the opportunity of taking his girl friend, Barbara, to the Spring Dance, however he was discovered and put on probation. To add to his difficulties, he was blamed for pawning the school band instruments. In the end Henry was saved dis- grace by the aid of the police force and the sympathetic assistant principal and was al- lowed to pursue his real talents as artist in the South Side Trade School, where he really belonged. When Henry's mother realized that her son was not a natural for Princeton, in spite of parental desire, Henry's success and happiness were assured. All three acts were staged in the principal's office, two mornings in spring. Doubling of some of the roles for the two nights provided for additional seniors to participate in the play. We of Sparta High School appreciate the opportunity to be able to have a hot lunch at noon. We know that the school is trying to help us become strong boys and girls both mentally and physically and are do- ing What they can to help us. Cheer Leaders What is athletics Without cheer leaders? It is an incomplete contest that lacks the acrobatic tricks, the color, and the screaming of voices. Sparta High is like other schools in displaying these signs of enthusiasm. On September 20, after a pep meeting the gym, the student body elected Connie Hanson, Greta Hove, Donna Heath, and Helen Hoag as cheer leaders. We feel that this cheering squad has attained a new level. Greta's and Helen'si acrobatics were a tonic to the student body. Donna's and Connie's leadership added abundantly to the support given to the team. The teams must have been spurred on by the traditional sky rocket or by others of the traditional school yells and songs. Surely, when the going was tough, a yell from the crowded bleachers, led by our efficient cheer leaders, gave the necessary en- couragement to battle. When a team realizes that the school is behind it pushing, its sense of honor vvon't let the school down . We thank our cheer leaders for their splendid Work the past year. , 60 :msg 35.1 TIT . ,Z Homecoming Homecoming festivities began with the crowning of the Queen, Jeanne Hanson, atithe pep rally Thursday evening. Donna Heath and Helen Hoag were in the Queen's court. Dean Habel, captain of the foot- ball team, reiged as 'king with Kieth Kenyon and George Dutton in his court. Following the crowning of the queen, community singing, and a short pep rally, the band led the procession to the football field where the group rallied around a bonfire. . Friday afternoon the band and Queen's float lead the parade down- town. The freshman class was awarded first, while the junior high and F. F. A rated seconds. In the evening the team battled with Baraboo and lost by a score of 13-12. After the game the swing orchestra furnished the music for a dance sponsored by the Girl Reserves. 61 . ea. Seventy candidates answered the call for the grid sport, and a determined squad was picked from these. Sparta 19-Logan 19 Led by Kenyon, who scored all three touchdowns, and Mantzke who played fine defensive ball, Sparta came from behind at the half to tie the Rangers in the inaugural at the Logan field. Sparta 0-Richland Center 0 In a game in which neither team could reach the goal, the Spartans played fine de- fensive ball in holding the Southern-10 team to a draw. , Sparta 35-Westby 0 Coach Ewers charges were able to score at will in downing the hapless Westby eleven. Scoring in every quarter the team showed a good oifense as well as defense. Sparta 12-Baraboo 13 In the annual Homecoming battle, which was anybody's game down to the final gun, Sparta missed both extra points in losing to the circus city boys. James and Habel were outstanding for Sparta. Sparta 13-Park Falls 14 A touchdown in the fleeting moments of the first half cost the Spartans another close game. Sparta tried to come back on Riley's score on an intercepted pass, but fell short. , Sparta 21-Viroqua 0 I , Scoring all three touchdowns in the first quarter, the Red Golds coasted on to win handily. Viroqua never seriously threatened. Mantzke, star center, was stricken with polio soon after the game. Sparta 0--Tomah 7 In the annual classic with our arch rivals, the Spartans fought the favored Indians on even terms throughout the game. An intercepted pass by Dickinson, who scampered to pay dirt for the only tally, cost us the game. A field goal attempt by Schwanke failed and the game ended 7-0. Sparta 0-Mausion 0 Both teams failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities in the final game postpon- ed because of a case of polio on the Sparta eleven. Sparta 17-La Crosse Central 24 Playing a stubborn, highly rated op- ponent in a slow moving game, Sparta's warriors went down to defeat at the hands of La Crosse Central. The defeat was due to Sparta's inability to hit the hoop. The first and third quarters were only one pointers for the Sparta boys. Benedict was high with nine points. Sparta 31-Mauston 37 In another slow moving game on the opponent's floor, Sparta was beaten by Mauston. Spink was high for Sparta with ten points, Sparta 45-Reedsburg 43 Sparta showed some speed against their Southern ten opponents, but let their ov- erwhelming lead dwindle in the last quarter of the ball game and barely won. Bray was high with thirteen points. Sparta 26-Tomah 42 Playing against a highly polished In- dian team, Sparta found the redmen too much for them and went down to defeat. James was high for Sparta with eight points. Sparta 33-Portage 31 In one of the better games of the sea- son, Sparta outplayed a small, but deter- mined team and won by two points. Bray was high with thirteen. Sparta 35-Hillsboro 29 Sparta defeated a weak Hillsboro team in Christmas vacation. James was high with thirteen points. Sparta 45-Westby 35 Showing a lot of speed and drive for three quarters, Sparta had the Norsemen 43-23 at the start of the fourth quarter. Coach Ewers sent in his reserves and they only scored three points in the last quar- ter to Westby's twelve. James and Bray tied for top scoring honors with thirteen points each. Sparta 32-La Crosse Logan 44 Sparta played a very good game against the Logan Rangers. The game was close until the last quarter when Logan out- scored Sparta l7-8. Sparta 36-Viroqua 46 On the dead floor of Viroqua, which gives them an eight point advantage, Sparta just couldn't hit the hoop on this particular night and was beaten by Vi- roqua. Benedict was high for the losers with twelve points. Sparta 36-Eau Claire 52 The game was close all the way through the first half, but the second half was all Eau Claire as they outscored our boys fifteen to twenty-eight. Spink and Bray were tied for high with nine points apiece. Sparta 39-Mauston 26 Sparta played another one of those fast moving games in which they were as hot as possible. They made all kinds of shots and played an all around good game. Salmon and Benedict were tied for high point honors with nine apiece. Sparta 25-Tomah 45 That Tomah jinx seemed to be on the fellows in this one as they fell apart in the second half. The game was nip and tuck for the first twelve minutes and then Tomah pulled ahead and our boys never came close. Benedict was high for Spar- ta with thirteen points. Sparta 46-Westby 25 Westby journeyed to Sparta only to be beaten by a strong Sparta team by twen- ty-one points. James was high for the winners with fifteen points. Sparta 45--La Crosse Logan 50 In what was termed the best game of the year by some, Sparta made all but one free throw and was overwhelmed by Logan for the second time this year. Bray and Benedict were tied for scoring hon- ors with twelve apiece. Sparta 31-La Crosse Central 37 Playing an all around good game, Spar- ta's young warriors were defeated by a polished quintet from the south side of La Crosse. This game was in the Tomah regional Tourney. Salmon was high point man With ten points. Sparta 28-La Crosse 31 In the consolation bracket of the To- mah Regional, Logan, beaten the night before by Mauston by one point in the closing moments of the game, moved in- to the consolation finals with a heart- breaking victory over the Spartans. Sparta again was the loser by a score of 2M-EBM. Spartan regular winners were Simonson and Page while Fisher slugged, it out to a draw. In the exhibition, Ruetten and Sauerman won while Loe drew. The final match was fought with Mauston. It was held in Sparta. Mauston was the victor by a score of 915-lk. Kellar took a well earned decision for one of Spar- ta's points and Dutton traded punches for a draw and another half point. Hoppman also outpointed his opponent in an exhibition. At first glance this doesn't seem to be a very impressive record but Coach Kube is pretty well satisfied with it. Most members of the team are new and inexperienced while the opposing teams all were veterans with years of experience. In '46 Sparta had no boxing at all because of the feeble response to the boxing call. In '45 there were only two matches-both with Tomah. In '44 there were no matches at all. Naturally, not too much can be expected with such a background. Next year's team profiting by this year's experience and practice should be able to give a better account of itself. 66 67 Baseball As the Spartan goes to press before the season is completed, the scores and com- ments of this year will have to be left out. Sparta is starting this year with six let- termen back from last year's West Central Championship team. They include: pitch- ers Gene McComb and Dave Benedict, infielders Dave James, Dick Hubbel and Dick Spink, and outfielder Bill Schwanke. Dave James is Captain of this year's team. Oth- ers who may find a spot on Mr. Nerby's team include Charles Campbell, Claude Neu- man, Dick Bray, Carmen Hesselberg, Don Hanson and many promising freshmen. This is Mr. Nerby's first year in Sparta but has had much experience in baseball and will be sure to turn out a fine team. The conference schedule for Sparta is as follows: April 22 ....................-. Sparta at Tomah April 29 .... .... if Vestby at Sparta May 6 .... .... M auston at Sparta May 13 --- .... Logan at Sparta May 20 ....................... Sparta at Viroqua These are all double-headers with the first game being seven innings and the second five innings. Track Last Year's Track Team was quite successful. They participated in two meets at Wisconsin Rapids, and three at home. Jerry Boldon set a new school record for High Jump--6 ft. 1 in. This year there are ten returning lettermen: Bob Salmon, Capt. - Mile, Broad Jump, Don Fisher-Half Mile, Dean Habel-440, Walt Riley-100, 200, 440, Stu Coff- man-100, 200, Broad Jump, Eugene McComb-Discus, Shot Put, Broad Jump, Bill Schwanke-Shot' Put, Discus, 200 yd. dash, Dave Benedict-High Jump, Carmen Hes- selberg-Pole Vault, Half Mile, Dick Spink-Pole Vault. The team went to Rapids, but because it was early in the season, they did not do too well. In the Inter-Class meet the Seniors and Juniors tied, Sophomores came sec- ond and Freshmen third, Gene McComb.broke the school record for Discus which was 117 ft., by throwing 124 ft. i The remainder of the track schedule is as follows: April 25 - Invitational Meet-Sparta. May 1 - Triangular Meet - Sparta. May 9 - West Central Conference - Sparta. May 16 or 17 - District Meet. May 23 or 24 - State Meet. 68 School Calendar SEPTEMBER ' 2.
