I Class History On August 29, 1949, rehearsals began on the stage of life with a completely new cast. Some of us were shy and bashful, even tearful, while others were brave and pushed back the tears under the guiding hands of thoughtful loving teachers and grademothers. Rehearsals continued for eight short years under the capable leadership of our directors. ln those years many new faces and personalities were added to our group but unfortunately many of the performers quit the show. There was never a dull moment for the performers or the audience. Little things such as fights over the jump ropes, so called tattle tales, a certain performer fainting, little romances, people crying everyday and new practice teachers gave the perfonners just the spice it needed. We had rehearsed for eight years now, for which we received an honored certificate for our performances. Now we felt we were ready to go to work to achieve our next major production-graduation. The stage was set and the curtain opened on the first act, A Freshman Knows Not and Knows l-Ie Knows Not. The stars were as follows: President, Barney Folger, Vice-President, lean Toliver, Secretary, Barbara Truitt, Treasurer, Carlyle Shepherd. We started rehearsal as members of F.F.A., F.l'l.A., and other activities such as basketball and cheerleading. We elected Margaret as our Homecoming Queen, representing the ninth grade. The act ended with a thrill of being out of school for three months, but we were still anxious for summer vacation to pass. The curtain opened on the second act, A Sophomore Knows Not and Knows He Knows Not. The following were stars for this act: President, Charles Edwards, Vice-President, jerry Sanders, Secretary, Polly Lucas, Treasurer, Billy Wayne Crouse, and Reporter, Margaret Andrews. This year, members of our cast worked just a little harder and fourteen performers of the cast became members of the Beta Club. We elected Polly Lucas, Homecoming Queen, represent- ing the tenth grade. The third act, A junior Knows But Knows Not That He Knows, found us with work to do. The stars of this performance were President, Charles Edwards, Vice-President, Carol Sue Waytt, Secretary, Patsy Truitt, Treasurer, jean Toliver, and Reporter, Mary Alice Hicks. We were very excited on the day when we measured for and ordered our class rings. Each performer took part in working for the main event of the year, our junior-Senior Prom, with the theme Silver Moon Over Hawaii. This year the class elected jean Toliver, Homecoming Queen, representing the eleventh grade. Many performers of our cast took part in the Beta Club Ministral, which was a great success under the leadership of our director, Mr. Dolinger. ln April the Beta star performers wnet to Raleigh for the State Con- vention, The last act, A Senior Knows and Knows He Knows, found us looking forward to our senior year. A few of the perfomiers were engaged and others deciding on their future. Was college the next performance? Stars for the Senior performance were: President,Charles Edwards, Vice-President,Carlyle Shepherd, Secre- tary, Polly Lucas, Treasurer, Barney Folger, and Reporter, jean Toliver. Our annual, THE SPARTAN, was published after many long, hard hours of work. Some of the most joyous occasions of this year were, receiving our class rings, electing Precious Brady as Homecoming Queen, thus winning the contest by our hard work, In addition to these acts, we selected mascots and superlatives. Then there was the last junior-Senior Prom, a beautiful occasion which will never be forgotten by the entire cast. We have now reached our final performances, class night, the baccaulerate, and at last graduation. We shall soon be departing and going out into life to try to make it a success. Each will use the year of rehearsing and presenting the acts at Sparta High School as strength and support for beginning the next per- formance in our life. The curtain has closed and the stage is ready for a new cast to begin their performance. The show must go on.
