What- ever ir may be that concerns you on these pages, some day, in years to come, may you look back and find yourhigh school memories recorded here, in this volume. It is our sincere hope that in future years you will be able to say we accomplished our task. So now, dear reader, slowly turn the pages---you'l1 find yourself there someplace. The door to success is labeled push CEOICAU 011 In appreciation for his continuous guidance and efforts on our behalf, we the class of 1957 hereby dedicate this edition of The Spartan to Mr. Robert E. Fitch. UD I2lll1IEll0Ell1I'S SSAGE 'Qu-an TO THE CLASS OF 1957 In a short time you will begin new activity. All growth depends on activity. There is little or no development, physically or intellectually, without effort -- and effort means work. To many people work is a curse, that is not true, rather it is a prerogative of intelligence. It is the measure of your growth as an individual, as a village, a nation -- In fact civilization itself. To the class of 1957 I would ask you to keep in mind that things endure in human affairs when they are not made of pride and power, but of humility and when you have a sweet sense of accomplishment and recognize the value of every minute. It is our hope that during your short stay at Sparta schools you have gathered knowledge to the extent that you will agree with John Ruskin, who wrote The only difference between education and non-education is accuracy, Sincerely yours, Z ij Q W. H. DeHart DRIH IDAVS SSAGE TO THE CLASS OF 1957 Each of us is born with the beginnings of one thing that, down through the years, will be observed, commented upon and judged as much or more than any other item. Worn on our back, in plain view, we write daily messages for our fellow men to read. Many are the colors of the crayons we use and the script may vary from courageous, bold and clear, to smudged and faltering, but the messages will be there regardless. Some call it REPUTATION, others know it as THE RECORD or MY STORY. I call it THE SLATE. The crayons we use have familiar names: Ideals, attitudes, habits, interests, words spoken or unspoken, things done or not done, our dreams, joys, sorrows, our pride and our shame, All these are there and many more. For each of you I hope the messages you have written and will write, may gain for you a generous share of life's most precious possessions: Peace of mind, joy in your work, kindly thoughts in the minds of others and self-respect, Sincerely yours, James H. If you look close enough you may see Ken Simmons, Don Stephens, and Russ Thayer peeling potatoes. for their space platoon tmder the command of Duane Witt. Oh Look!! There's Jim Kline and Owen Belcher still digging for green cheese. The navigator, Larry Bradford, tells the passengers that he saw a sign designed by Steve Kober telling that the destination, the planet Spartonia, is near. As the spaceship lands Carol Willoughby pushes the button and steps aside to let the passen- gers off while John Sullivan seranades them on his guitar. As the passengers look arotmd them, they see a modern hospital designed by Garth Gillett. The doctor in charge is Anita Jacobs who supervises the mending of Jack Sullivan's a.ntenna by JoAnn Scoby, the removal of space from LaVern Schut's space wound by Maureen Crowley, plastic surgery on Bob Davis's bubble helmet by Rosalie Ltmdquist, and the giving of a shortening operation to John Ekster by Sharyl Reed. Further on they see a modern hardware store, designed by Chuck Gass. The owner of the store is Ted Stevens and his secretaries areAnita Coalter and Shirley Reed. Alwin Rogers is busy selling an invisible tractor tire to Dale Cranmer. June Bristol is looking at the house utensiles for her future home. Walking further down the street they see a luxurious school designed by Eugene Hiler. Upon entering the school they found Mary Arnidon teaching Science, Barb Klenk teaching Art, Janet Van Leeuwen teaching dancing, Nancy Scholten as librarian, and Neil Andrus as coach of the win- ning Tiddly Winks team, with Bob Merchant and Reggie Pennington as high scorers. In the principal's office they found Marinel Krupp as the secretary and Dixie Dayton as her assistant. On touring the Superintendent's office they found Betty Saur sitting on Superintendent Larry Hatha - way's knee busily taking dictation. As Betty's assistants they found Marcia DeLoof and Lynette Coster, busily studying Betty's technique as secretary. Across the street they find Barry Robinson, a veterinarian, fixing a broken frogs leg, assis- ted by Marlene Chapman, his secretary. Marlene is putting on the splint. As the planet trooper, Bob Deems, directs them around the corner a barber shop was dis- covered. The barber, Harold Bristol, is giving Mert Anderson a new Spartesian haircut. Some of the passengers made appointments with his receptionist, Peggy Sizemore. After leaving the barber shop they caught the rocket bus, driven by Lollie Zahm to the church. Within the church they came upon Edna Anderson and Sharon Doren holding Bible classes. Leaving the church they rocketed to the local telephone office that specializes in vision telephones. They watched Kathy Bear, Carol Derck and Dorothy Ockaskis putting through long distance calls to earth. They were so swamped with calls that their secretaries Donna Schafer, Shirley Lockard, and Faye Ann Fullmer had to assist them. With a hop, skip, and a jump, the group landed at the business school where Rosalie Rood, Sharon Carrier, Ardith Wooden, and Joyce Andrus are taking up a comptometer course and Tom Teesdale is studying to be a C.P,A. On the way back to the rocketship, the passengers stopped by a fruit farm owned by Herb Reister. They picked some of Herb's prize blue peaches to take back with them on their trip, So with John Sullivan's song So Long It'sBeen Good To Know You and a wave of good-bye, they blasted off for Earth. 312. As soon as the football season is under way so is the junior concession stand. This project also continues through the basketball season. As Christmas nears, the juniors offer a gift suggestion to solve all shopping problems, per- sonalized stationery. Ifstationery does not satisfy your needs, the juniors suggest chocolate can- dies which is another class project. It seems to be a natural fact that high school students are forever running out of pencils. The juniors oblige the student body by selling to them basketball schedule pencils in an assort- ment of colors. The climax of the school year is the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. , . . , aj, M., at L uw ' ' .K wa . ., ,P 3 W K g Y Q Qu se X Q -.
