A great deal of time and effort was put forth to get the annual to the press on time, but we waded through all of our difficulties and managed to make the deadline. We hope that we have given you a yearbook which you will be proud of now and in the future. THE STAFF 'r Tig . B BARB SCHWANDER AND NAN KOBER -PICTURES 'W-I LUG f or THE CLASS or 1953 'L ' 5, f fe A, N V. 'g g .. N, V - 4. '- We entered high school awed and lost in the spacious halls of SHS. Our first duty, the election of officers, was as follows: President, Mike Feichtenbinerg Vice-President, Charles Gilsong Treasurer, Joyce Robertsg Secretary, Sally Pierson, Miss Rie and Mr. Lectka were chosen as sponsors. We started our money-making by having baked goods sales and selling greeting cards. Our biggest project for our Freshman year was an all-school party, THE HUCKLEBUCKU. It was a big success. Kay Crouse was elected to the Senate, and the year ended as we looked forward to a big sophomore year. We began the business of our Soph year by re -electing Mike to the presidency. Then we chose Walt Reister as Vice-President, Emily Anderson as Secretary, and Joyce Roberts was again picked as the Treasurer. Mr. Harris was chosen to replace Mr. Lectka as our class sponsor and Walt Reister was voted to the Senate. This year the Class of '53 sold Christmas wrapping paper and had a successful baked goods sale. On December 22 we helda toboggan party at the Newaygo playground area. Our all-school party had a St. PalIick's Day theme. Starting a new trend, we ordered our class rings at the end of the sophomore year. The Class Officers for the Junior year, our third in the old Alma Mater, were Walt Reister, President: Don Thorson, Vice-President: Beatrice Vandermeer, Secretary: and Verna Chase, Treasurer. Shirley Forwood was voted into the Senate. To raise money for the Prom, we sold refreshments at the football and basketball games. We then canvassed the town selling ice cream. Another big project was the magazine subscription sale. We put a grett deal of effort into presenting our Junior Play, REST ASSURED , under the direction of Miss Hanna, which was put on to a full house. For our annual all-school dance we joined hands with the Sophomores to set a new precedentin school parties. The combined classes put on the big affair which was titled La CUCARACHA The high-point of the year was the gala Junior-Senior Prom-Banquet. The affair was appropriately termed MEMORY PLANTATION with the theme being the Old South. At the end of our third year at SHS we were anxiously awaiting the start of our final term, our Senior year. Electing Walt Reister as President, Don Thorson as Vice -President, Barb Murphy as Secretary, and Smart Bradford as Treasurer was our opening item of business. The Annual Staff, headed by Les Line as Editor and Greta Chap- man as his assistant, began its work toward the 1953 Spartan. We sold donuts as our main project, and we also had a few minor ones, among them a work day and a baked goods sale. In the fall we presented the play, OH PROMISE ME , to a large audience. Miss Baker directed it. The new Senate member was Craig Larson. Time sped by swiftly--During the first week of May the Spartan arrived, one of the biggest and best SHS yearbooks ever. Then came the Prom with the Juniors showing us a fine time. After that came the thrill of graduation with the sad thoughts of leaving Sparta High forever. With the memory of the trip to Washington left fresh in our minds we went out to face the World. ED SHANGLE UNIOR-SENIOR PROM-BAN UET Y V M N-waa....aW .,., ra MEMORY A PLANTATION On the eveningh of May 29, 1952, our awaited plans for the Junior -Senior Prom-Banquet came true. The chosen theme was at of a MEMORY PLANTATION which could well be interpreted as such throughout the evenmg. Our Banquet included decorations which were very appropriate---featuring a Southern menu, served by waiters and waitresses who were dressed to fit the occasion. The Prom was a plan based on the Old South which is something we will never forget. After much time and work, the gym brought forth the dream of a Southern mansion. The true furnishings of the lawn furniture, grass, many kinds of flowers, trees, and our Southern home in- vited and gave us a most enjoyable and memorable evening as the guests of MEMORY PLANTATION . The orchestra of Tom Zaloras provided excellent dancing music throughout the evening of the Prom. ,JV 44 1'-lm. The school was in her home, a log house, located about one and one -half miles south of Sparta, on the east side of the road. The Nash School, the first district school in Sparta, was built in 1849 almost directly across the street from where the Methodist Church now stands. It was a small frame, one room building with a,single row of benches, an old fashioned heating stove with the fuel being furnished for tuition. There was no kindergarten and two recesses were held, one for the boys and one for the girls. Later, the porch across the front of the building was made in- to a room for the smaller grades. The building was later moved to the east end of Division Street and made in- to a hotel. Mr. Jonathan Nash, who founded Sparta, gave land for a new school building which is now known as Syme's Hill. But when the railroad went through, the school site was changed to the north end of Mill Street, now Union Street. This white brick school was built in 1875. There were two rooms, one upstairs and one downstairs. Between 1880 and 1883 a wing was built on the south side. This also had an upstairs and a downstairs room, mak- ing four rooms in all. Shortly after this, a small wooden frame building was built on the south side of the white brick building where the smaller grades were taught. In 1901 these buildings were torn down and the present school building was built. The first building included what is now the middle section. In 1910 another addition was built on the south side of the school, and in 1925 the gymnasium and several class rooms on the north side were added. During the period of 1936-1937, the current junior high section was added to the south end of the building, and the current new elementary section was added in 1949. Sparta became a twelve grade school in 1894. In 1870 bookkeeping was first introduced by Mr. Bradley Nash. Sparta received its first United States Flag in 1880 and the same year the trees in the school campus were plant- ed. NASH SCHOOL HOUSE QCENTERQ 1849 Q wp. . r A Y U A A' v3 '!f'rf ? The team fully lived up to its title, The Fighting Spartans, finishing the nine game sked with a record of five wins, two losses, and two ties. It copped a co-championship in the Ken-New-Wa League, compiling an undefeated conference record, marred by only a tie with co-champ Comstock Park. Coach Norm Harris, in winning his second league grid title in two years of coaching at Sparta, did a fine rebuilding job on the com paritively green Spartan eleven. The offensive crew was a constant threat and was cap- able of scoring from any spot on the gridiron. It was sparked by a fine running and passing backfield and an ef- fective, hardworking line. The defensive group was one of the finest in the league. Four Spartans were picked on all conference teams chosen by the Herald and the Press. They were Mike Feichtenbiner, Glenn Burgett, Dale Trimble, and Duane Bradford. Mike Feichtenbiner and Jerry Shoup were the co-captains of the team. Head coach was Mr. Harris. He was assisted by Mr. Perrin and Mr. Dominey. Defeating every team in the Ken-New-Wa League once, including champion Coopersville, the Spartans ended the loop court campaign with a record of eight wins and four defeats. The overall season slate or Sparta was nine victories and six losses. The starting five was composed ofMike Feichtenbiner at center, Dale Trimble and Duane Bradford at forwards, and Dick Anderson and Don Bradford at guards. Other regulars included Gale Trimble, Bob Carroll, Jerry Lockard, Ward Johnson, Don Thorson, and Jerry Shoup. SPARTA GIRLS SEXTET COPS ONE WIN, TWO TIES. Much interest was shown again in girls basketball as about 40 girls comprised the group which finished the season. For the first time, a girl's schedule was formulated in the new Ken-New-Wa League: As only four schools in the league have girl teams, it was possible to form a schedule of only six contests. These were played on Thursday nights entirely separate from the boy's contests, with all schools playing each night in a twin-bill. Of the seven senior girls on the team, Ethyle Krewson, Vonda Norton, Nancy Miller, and Betty Trudell play- ed guards, while Jean Nason, Janet Amburgey, and Shirley Forwood were the forwards. Nan Miller and Shirley Forwood were honorary co-cap- tains. Arlene Saur and Pat Reister were managers. The team was coached by Thelma L. Russell, and played its best game when it upset Coopersville 32-26. By using a two-platoon system and su stituting freely he gave a large group of top prospects as much experience as possible. The team lacked heig t but overcame this disadvantags: with speed and hustle. After a slow start, the Spartan seconds became one of the top reserve teams in the ew Ken-New-Wa League. Among the nopmen on the team were: Arlan Lundquistg Ron Pennington: Jirn McCracken: Ray Schuilingz and Don Singleton. E! QU!! 'W fn' M.-an 55 ff HH Ax K X Q, l g C ASS PROPIIECY It is a beautiful day on November '7, 1959. This is the day of the annual Homecoming of Sparta High School. The alumni are beginning to gather at Balyeat Field where the Homecoming game and ceremonies are about to begin. We fBarb Schwander, who is now a Dental Technician: Nancy Kober, who owns a well-known restaurant and Phyllis Emelander, who is nowa very outstanding Interior Decoratorj are rushing to participate with our fellow classmates in the Homecoming ceremonies. We have just been detained because we have run out of gas. We stop at a very modern, up to date gas station and we are very surprised to see one of our former classmates, jerry Lockard owns this station, as well as several others near and around Sparta. Therefore, to make up time, we were hurrying down Division Street when suddenly a police crusier motioned for us to stop. As they came to talk to us, we recognized them as two of our former classmates, Bob Blumenstein and Walt Hatton. After they had recognized us, they told us that although we were speeding, they would not give ns a ticket as they also were in a hurry to get to the game. During the discussion, they told us that Jim Bellamy now owns a well-known Sport Shop on Rouge River near Sparta. After we arrived at the game we bought our tickets, 'then noticed the players exercising to the song of Sentimental Journey, which brought many memories as this was the usual scene back in the football seasonof '52. While this was going on, we happened to notice Sparta's two very successful coaches who were Ed Shangle and Jerry Shoup. Naturally we were very glad to see them and they told us that the Dr. and Nurses tl1at were standing by for any emergencies were Ed Walcutt, Ruth Schaefer, and Sue Ringleberg, who own the new clinic here in Sparta. As the game progressed, we suddenly noticed Kay Crouse, the Home Ec. teacher, who told us she had just received word that the Sparta Bank had just been robbed. This, of course, was quite a shock to all the residents of Sparta. The officials called in the F. B.I. Two of it 's most efficient detectives are Mike Feiehtenbiner and Craig Larson who were elected to work on the case here in Sparta. We then saw Don Thorson, another former football player of Sparta who is now an Indusuial Art Instructor. Don told us that Bob McCracken is a draftsman at Lears in Grand Rapids. He then told us that three of our former classmates, Eleanor Shepard, Pat Saur and Shirley Chesney were married by Dean Truax last June. During the half-time we were very pleased to meet Dick Anderson who is now a professional baseball player on a well-known team. Dick told us that Lorinda Lane who was the Homecoming Queen in our Senior year is now a retailer in a New York store. He also mentioned t11e fact that Walt Reister is a very prominent lawyer in New York City. Vonda Norton, Christine Fahling, Ruth Klocko, Verna Chase, and Shirley Jenkins are a few members of his large secretarial staff. A group of the Sparta teaching staff are now approaching us, and who do we see but Greta Chapman, Nancy Miller, and Suzanne Steinertl They tell us that Les Line is the owner of a newspaper which has a very large circulation around the State of Michigan. His two secretaries are Helen Smith and Pat Watt. As we were leaving the game the crowd was very hilarious as Sparta has just won the game 49 -7 over a neighboring town. As we were coming around the comer of Union Street we saw an accident between two cars which were full of excited spectators. The nurse in charge was Joyce Roberts. After everything was taken care of, we talked to Joyce and she told us that Bea Vandermeer is a staff musician at the Radio Station in Chicago. She also told us that Ethyle Krewson and Bertha Maciejewski are now married. We are now driving down Main Street where we see Mayo's Construction Company which is owned by Dick Mayo, Car1's Self -Service Garage owned by Carl Moody, and the newDental Building which is operated by Shirley Kik and Lucynne Stark. It seems everyone is on their way to the High School Gym for the Homecoming Dance. As we walked in the School, we were rather exhausted after the game and our trip, so we went to the Lounge where we picked up a magazine and in the inside cover we saw a very attractive advertisement which was on cosmetics. As we read further we noticed it was by a well-known Company founded by Betty Trudell, one of our former classmates. We went into the dance and we met Bob Herrington, home on leave from the Naval Air Corps. The pretty girl he is dancing with is none other than Barb Murphy, who is now a school teacher in New York City. As we were talking with her she told us that Arlene Saur is in Califomia and is a receptionist ina radio broadcasting Company. She also told us that Elizabeth Beuschel is a secretary in a large business concem in Grand Rapids. Since we were in Sparta for a few hours we decided to take a ride out to Peach Ridge. As we were driving along we saw a mailbox with the name, Bill Radeck and Sons. Also about a mile from there we came to a very prosperous fruit farm. We noticed a sign which said Johnson 8: Mullenix. We then knew this farm was being operated under the good management of Ward Johnson and Nelson Mullenix. As we continued through Peach Ridge we saw many such farms. Another one that we noticed in particular was a fruit farm that was owned and operated by Doug Crawford and Russ Fales. As we talked to Doug he told us that Dan Whitehouse wasa mechanical engineer at Junior College in Grand Rapids. While we were reminiscing he also told us that Bob Carroll was in the Coast Guard. We decided we would go back to Sparta. As we were coming into town we noticed a grocery store with a sign in front which said Ed's Grocery which is owned by Ed Finch. We went in to talk to Ed and he told us that three of his regular customers are the former Janet Hammerlind, Anne Fraleigh and Elinor Gilson who all were married soon after we graduated from High School. It seems that Ed has seen Stuart Bradford who is a science teacher and Charles Gilson who is an art teacher, just recently. As we continued down Main Street we saw a modern-music studio, and being lovers of music we decided to stop. As we walked inside we heard students tak- ing both piano and voice lessons, given by Janet Amburgey at the piano and Shirley Forwood and Jean Kay Nason as the voice teachers. So nowas we have looked into the livesof our former classmates, our thoughts are filled with pleasant memo- ries of the days we spent together in our alma mater. f nd .... wax 1 , , '.... , , W ' N ' .
