Coming back to visit Sparta, for a day, our first thought is of the old red brick school house. As we drive up we are amazed to see a new addition to the high school and a larger gymnasium. Looking into this spacious gym as we enter, we see none other than Carol Fahling coaching the girls' basketball team and practicing hard for the game Friday night. Paul Schaefer is the coach of the boys team. Starting in the elementary school who should we meet but Almeta Powell with her 25 kindergarteners. Going on down the hall we pass a room and hear someone say, K, L, M, N, are written on the line. Stopping to investigate further we find that was the voice of Gail Brooks, in charge of the large commercial department. Passing the language department we see Delores Thorson busy teaching a large Spanish class. This week is the Art Exhibition in the high school and joan Nequist is very busy helping her students prepare their exhibitions. Today in class we hear that Joan Austin is going to speak on interior decorating and Delores Vanderwoud is to speak on sculptoring. Looking in the science room, Sanford Deyo is explaining an experiment to his physics class. Leaving school we decide to drive around town and see if we can find any of our former classmates. On M37 we are surprised to see a large bowling alley called The Bowl-in-Alley run by Kenneth Jourden and his assistants Ray Romeyn and Greydon Held. Across from the bowling alley is a new garage, Town Service with Walter Towns the sole owner and proprietor, his head mechanic is jerry Topping, who is an expert. Under jerry we find Charles Kasper as an apprentice. Driving through town we pass a beauty shop that is run by Kathryn Rider, a very able beautician. Another shop is run by Alden Line who is a radio technician. Across the street is a grocery store owned and operated by Frank Bueche. Driving past the Muskegon Piston Ring Company, we decide to pay some old acquaintances a visit. As receptionist we see Lenore Sterkenburg at the Switchboard. In the accounting room, Leona Straus, Mildred Straus, and Doris Kober are busy running calculating machines. Jackie Bradford is working in the l.B.M. room. As we leave the company we see Gordon Welch and Carl Mosher leaving the first shift. Stopping in at Bob's Lunch, we see Bob Norton busy keeping all his patrons satisfied, and he has many. Stopping for something to eat we start talking to Karl Anderson, who is a milk hauler for the Carnation Company. He informs us that Bob Trudell jack Dufort, and Kenneth Swanson are in the navy. Bob is playing cornet in the 15 navy band, while jack is working as a mechanic. Inquiring further Karl tells us Betty Lonnee is a private secretary for one of the largest law firms in New York and that john Scholten is studying the organ in the Conservatory of Music in Boston. Glancing at a newspaper we find Gordon Badgerow's name in the headlines. Badgerow and staff of nurses, consisting of Jane Fraleigh, Eunice Ritz, Loeta Baughan, and Delores Wwlworth have just performed one of the most delicate operations of these times. Audrey Axford is the head dietitian at the hospital. Passing a church we see a bride and groom leaving which makes us think of Lois Empie and Dorothy Reyburn who are happily married. Reading a poster in one of our stores, we see that Conservation Officer, Gene Brooks is speaking at the high school about the preservation of natural resources. Calvin College held it's graduation exercises last night with Edwin Bristol named as one of the top ten graduates. Ann Nicholson also graduated with high honors from Junior College. Driving through the country we glance at the mail boxes of several of the nice farm homes on Fruit Ridge Avenue. The first box who's name we recognize is none other than Alvin Hill who is running a large fruit farm and is doing very well this year. Curtis Heft and Bill Nelton are in partnership on a 150-acre dairy farm. The next mail box has the words Ralph Fitzner' printed clearly on it. On this farm we see a beautiful, spacious farm home set back from the road and surrounded by an orchard of peach trees. Up ahead of us we see a sign that says Warren Guiles' Apiaries . Later we learn that he is running one of the largest apiaries in the country. The next farm belongs to Carl Fahling who after high school took an agriculture course in college and is now managing this large farm with the able assistance of Robert Bradford, who is his most dependable farmhand. Suddenly we notice three tractors coming down the road and as they pass, we notice that they are being driven by Gordon Baehre, Roger Irish and Carlton Youngquist, each working on farms in this area. Thus we end our day in Sparta. Many of the occupations that our former classmates are now holding are a surprise to us, but many are not. Whether these prophecies come true or not, we want to wish the best of luck to everyone in the class of 1950. The theme was nursery rhymes and both the Methodist Church dining room and the gym were decorated appropriately. The napkins, place cards and programs had a nurs- ery rhyme character on them and the center pieces were made to look like May-pole dances. The gym was converted into a fairy-land of nursery rhymes. Three huge spider webs made of Christmas tinsel surrounded the orchestra pit. Dozens of sparkling stars dropped from threads from the false ceiling added more beauty to the make believe spectacle. A huge mural of Little Boy Blue covered one entire wall of the gym. On the other, Mary Quite Contrary took care of her garden of flowers. Punch was served in the home of The Old Woman Who Lived in the Shoe . Many of the guests made wishes in the wishing well which stood in the center of the dance floor. The stage was changed from a structure of wood and plaster to a garden with soft grass and lawn chairs in which to relax. At intermission, Miss Susan Adams of Rockford entertained the group with two dance numbers. Sealed: Miss Hanna, C. Fahling, J. Fraleigh, D. XVoolworth, J. Bradford, G. Brooks, A. Powell, A. Ax ord. Standing: R. Norton, R. Trudell, G. Held, C. Mosher, C. Kasper, A. Line, S. Deyo, K. Rider, L. Baughan, M. Straus, R. Bradford, J. Scholten, D. Kober, L. Straus, J. Nequist, D. Thorson, J. Austin. enior f ay The class of 1950 began its thespian activities with the rootin'est, tootin'est, funniest satire on the West ever to gallop across a stagef' namely, Desperate Ambrose by Donald Payton. It was presented on March 25, 1949 under the direction of Miss Virginia Wilson. The play was a tremendous hit and boosted the juniors' treasury quite a little. After it was all over, the cast and all the play committees went to Camp Lake to celebrate. Witli one successful production behind them, the seniors turned to a bit more diffi- cult dramag Mother Is A Freshman , a comedy in three acts by Raphael Blau and adapted from the well-known movie of the same name, starring Loretta Young and Van Johnson. The play, under the direction of Miss Marion Hanna and assisted by John Scholten, was as great a success as the junior play. It was given on December 8, 1949. 19 nior Cfau .Hiafory Seventy-one determined freshmen began our glorious first year of high school by trying to make the upper classmen forget that we were green and by electing the following class officers: President, Jane Fraleigh, Vice-President, Sanford Deyo, Secre- tary, Almeta Powell, Treasurer, jackie Bradford, Senate Members, Jerry Topping and Gordon Badgerow, Athletic Board, Gene Brooks, and Library Board, Sanford Deyo and Barbara Carrier. We chose Miss Douglass and Mr. Gardner as our sponsors. Our first big taste of Senior High Society was had on February 14, when we gave our party, Cavorting Cupids , with the gym appropriately decorated for Saint Valentine's Day. Selling name cards to the businessmen of the town and collecting waste fat helped to keep us busy and also to enlarge our treasury. Then, almost too soon, it was September of 1947, and we were Sophomores. Chosen as Class Officers were: President, Bob Trudell, Vice-President, Paul Schaefer, Secretary, Betty Lonnee, Treasurer, Karl Anderson, and Library Board, Jackie Bradford and John Scholten. That year's addition to the Senate was Sanford Deyo, and we chose to keep Gene Brooks on the Athletic Board, and Miss Douglass and Mr. Gardner as our sponsors. Dick Holgrem's orchestra furnished the music for our semi-formal party, Frosty Frolic , which was presented in January. To boost our finances, we had baked goods sales, a fat drive, and noon movies. Before we knew it, our second year of High School was over and we had returned to school as juniors. jane Fraleigh was elected Class President that Fall, and other officers were: Vice- President, John Scholten, Secretary, Delores Thorson, Treasurer, jerry Topping, Athletic Board, Gene Brooks, Library Board, John Scholten and jackie Bradford, and our new member to the Senate was Paul Schaefer. Still doing a wonderful job of being our sponsors were Mrs. Wenstrom and Mr. Gardner. A very big event that year was when we received our class rings. Our main thought was to make money, which was accomplished through selling refreshments at the football and basketball games, and magazine and baked goods sales. Our dance, presented in November, was Gob- bler's Giggle , and our junior Play was Desperate Ambrose , a western farce, which was directed by Miss Virginia Wilson. Our finances took a slight beating when we entertained the Seniors with the Jr.-Sr. Banquet and Prom on May 21. The gym was cleverly decorated, the theme being Nursery Rhymes. At last we were Seniors! After getting over the excitement of being THE big wheels, we settled down to our studies and other activities. For the fourth year, we elected Gene Brooks to the Athletic Board, and other officers chosen were: President, john Scholten, Vice-President, Bill Nelton, Secretary, Betty Lonnee, Treasurer, Paul Schaefer, Library Board, john Scholten, and our new Senate member was Gene Brooks. Mr. Gardner remained our sponsor and we chose Miss Hanna to help him out. Mother is a Freshman , our hilarious three-act play directed by Miss Marion Hanna, was presented on December 8. Shortly after, on December 17, Tinsel Twirl , our Christmas Party, was given with the entertainment by a tuneful Senior Quartet. Our finances were enlarged by means of baked goods sales, selling stationery, greeting cards and candy. On May 28, our Baccalaureate Service was held at the Sparta Baptist Church. Then on june l came the night that we had thought of since that first day in grade school: Graduation! The first money making project the class undertook was selling hot dogs, candy, gum, coffee, etc. at the football games. Later, we sold things at basketball games and had two baked goods sales. The magazine sale was perhaps the main source of the year's income. Harvest Moon Ball was the name of our party presented November 12, 1949. Dale Tannis and his orchestra furnished the music. March 23 and 24, the juniors presented Stranger In The Night under the direction of Mrs. Bernice Sirrine. The cast had loads of fun producing this mystery-comedy and it was a big success. Our social highpoint of the year was, of course, the junior-Senior Prom and Ban- quet, which was presented on May 20. The theme was An Evening In Paris . The banquet was held in the Methodist Church and the gym was decorated with little Parisian shops. It was a grand send-off for the class of 1950. un ior Officelu Seated: R. Houk, Treasurerg J.
