Occupaiinns Looking out of 208's do-it-yourself window in September, we saw the beginning of the longest steel strike. Employment was hard to find in Edgemere. For most of us it was a year of riding buses and streetcars. We dined and studied on the Number I0 bus. Work ended at 9 P.M. A quick coke and a long trip home left us from midnight to 6 A.M. for homework. After a year of hard work and very little sleep, we faced the future with greater confidence. l i i

Diverswcd The D.O. program is a work experience program for seniors who wish to find their place in a world of work. It is a course that has sense appeal to many high school students who want a program of this type to better prepare themselves for the future. l

The Great Books Club was formed under the sponsorship of the English Department in September i959 and functioned once every two or three weeks as an after-school activity under the direction of Mr. Britvch, the club's founder. This is the only club of its kind operating on the high school level in the state of Maryland. Members of the English Department, as well as other members of the faculty, felt that more could be done for the students who were capable and willing to read some of the finest works of art existing in the literary field. Reading, 'however, is not enough, the maior purpose of the club is to read and to discuss as completely as possible a great book in terms of: the literal meaning of the story, the form that is used, the significant historical and biographical back- ground, the sociological implications, the psychological insights, and the philoso- phical meanings, and finally the appreciation of the aesthetic values of the book. A visiting lecturer, which in most cases was a faculty member, gave a stimulat- ing talk on the book scheduled for a particular meeting. The meeting was then opened for discussion by members. The membership was limited so that there were never more than twenty mem- bers. Each member was carefully selected on the basis of ability, willingness to read, and potential participation in discussions. lf a student fell behind in the reading activities, he was dropped from the club. Some of the books read this year were: Walden, Thoreau, Lord Jim, Conrad, The Unvanquished, Faulker, David Copperfield, Dickens, Crime and Punishment, Dostoevski, The Return of the Native, Hardy, Great Tales and Poems, Poe, Jane Eyre, Bronte, Pride and Prejudice, Austen, Don Quixote, Cervantes, The Old Man and the Sea, Hemingway, and a few works by Shakespeare.
