Administration Principal 's Message to 511155 af I 960 First, to provide a general education for all the future citizens, second, to pro- vide good elective programs for those who wish to use their acquired skills im- mediately on graduation, third, to provide satisfactory programs for those whose vo- cations will depend on their subsequent education in a college or university. These are the three main obiectives of a comprehensive high school such as ours, so stated in the most talked about books on American education of this year - James B. Conant's The American High School Today. Now is an appropriate time for our senior class to look at their school and at themselves in terms of these obiectives and of the world in which most of them have lived since 1942. Seniors, you will leave us at a time when Americans are trying to forget the uncertain future by recalling the equally uncertain past of exactly one hundred years ago when your nation faced its greatest tragedy. But it remains true that the best way to prepare for that future is to capitalize on Conant's stated obiec- tives. At the time of the Civil War, schools didn't provide a general education for all future citizens. Most of them did noth- ing for those wishing to acquire skills useful after graduation. Nor did their pro- grams always prepare adequately for col- lege work. But your school does in and out of class seek to develop good citizen- ship in you. It offers vocational programs undreamed of by your grandfathers. And if you have the will to learn and a fair amount of natural ability, it can get you into Hopkins or Goucher. 1960 can be for you if you have used your talents wisely, both a wonderful end and an equally wonderful beginning. Miss Krug ably assists Mr. Dowling by fulfilling her duties as vice principal

Mr. Samuel Picek In his first year as Assistant Administrator, Mr. Samuel Picek has proved to be industrious and an organizer. His solution to the corridor traffic problems and his efficient disciplinary en- forcement have won the respect of students and teachers alike. Mr. Picek's former position on our faculty was that of a seventh grade mathe- matics and science teacher. He served in this capacity for three years prior to his recent pro- motion. The student body will certainly agree Mr. Picek has exerted a beneficial influence on our school. fi i ..-4- 'f- SECRETARIES Main Office Miss Dorothy Deale Mrs. Brenda Wilson Library Mrs. Jean Holm Guidance Mrs. Gladys Hogue STANDING, L. to R.: Mrs. Hogue, Mrs. Holm, Mrs. Wilson.
