Cale with the dedication of the Hi-Points of 1960. ln his nine outstanding years at Sparrows Point High School, Mr. Cale has taught World History, English, Social Studies Ill, and Dramatics. As most of his students undoubtedly agree, Mr. Cale is the ideal high school teacher. Possessing the virtue of patience, he carefully directs his students onto the stage of life with the utmost capability. Long after graduation, the class of 1960 will remember Mr. Cale as a sincere, loyal, and dedicated teacher ofthe highest quality. Qcfrcuford All the world's a stage. And all the men and women merely players: They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages. At first the infant, Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms. And then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel And shining morning face, creeping like snail Unwilling to school. And then the lover, Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then a soldier, Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard, Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel, Seeking the bubble reputation Even in the cannon's mouth. And then the iustice, ln fair round belly with good capon lined, With eyes severe and beard of formal cut, Full of wise saws and modern instances, And he plays his part. The sixth age shifts Into the lean and slipper'd pantaloon, With spectacles on nose and pouch on side, His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide For his shrunk shank, and his big manly voice, Turning again toward childish treble, pipes And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all, ' . That ends this strange eventful history, ls second childishness and mere oblivion, ' Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything. ll -WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, AS YOU LIKE IT Act II, Scene VII Recognizing Jacque's statement above, we should like to carry out the theme therein and show, how life at Sparrows Point High School is related to dramatics. Many incidents of comedy, tragedy, and history have taken place within the walls of Sparrows Point High School during the four years of our occupancy. These incidents form the substance of our book. I5 Administration Principal 's Message to 511155 af I 960 First, to provide a general education for all the future citizens, second, to pro- vide good elective programs for those who wish to use their acquired skills im- mediately on graduation, third, to provide satisfactory programs for those whose vo- cations will depend on their subsequent education in a college or university. These are the three main obiectives of a comprehensive high school such as ours, so stated in the most talked about books on American education of this year - James B. Conant's The American High School Today. Now is an appropriate time for our senior class to look at their school and at themselves in terms of these obiectives and of the world in which most of them have lived since 1942. Seniors, you will leave us at a time when Americans are trying to forget the uncertain future by recalling the equally uncertain past of exactly one hundred years ago when your nation faced its greatest tragedy. But it remains true that the best way to prepare for that future is to capitalize on Conant's stated obiec- tives. At the time of the Civil War, schools didn't provide a general education for all future citizens. Most of them did noth- ing for those wishing to acquire skills useful after graduation. Nor did their pro- grams always prepare adequately for col- lege work. But your school does in and out of class seek to develop good citizen- ship in you. It offers vocational programs undreamed of by your grandfathers. And if you have the will to learn and a fair amount of natural ability, it can get you into Hopkins or Goucher. 1960 can be for you if you have used your talents wisely, both a wonderful end and an equally wonderful beginning. Miss Krug ably assists Mr. Dowling by fulfilling her duties as vice principal Mr. Samuel Picek In his first year as Assistant Administrator, Mr. Samuel Picek has proved to be industrious and an organizer. His solution to the corridor traffic problems and his efficient disciplinary en- forcement have won the respect of students and teachers alike. Mr. Picek's former position on our faculty was that of a seventh grade mathe- matics and science teacher. He served in this capacity for three years prior to his recent pro- motion. The student body will certainly agree Mr. Picek has exerted a beneficial influence on our school. fi i ..-4- 'f- SECRETARIES Main Office Miss Dorothy Deale Mrs. Brenda Wilson Library Mrs. Jean Holm Guidance Mrs. Gladys Hogue STANDING, L. to R.: Mrs. Hogue, Mrs. Holm, Mrs. Wilson. President, William Raukko, and advisor, Mr. Sakal- ski, worked very hard to make a success of the association, and succeeded in spite of the newness of their respective posi- tions. It is commendable that they sur- vived the many trials that beset the in- experienced, and the achievements of the association are largely due to their untiring efforts. In spite of a serious steel strike which would tend to hamper the sale of activity tickets, Linda Dorset and her committee tactfully pushed the sales drive in such a way as to make it much more of a success than had been predicted. Thomas Hinkelman in his capacity as vice-president managed a very ambitous program of Friday dances including both the orchestra and record hop variety. These were most instrumental in provid- ing a wholesome and steady recreation for what otherwise might have been many a lonely Friday evening. Clara Edenton handled a larger than men! By tar, the greatest achievement of our student leaders this year however, was the organization of the P.A.C. CPoint- er Action Committeej. This was an or- ganization composed ot a cross section of students throughout the school who by their example and actions were to impress upon the student body in gen- eral the necessity for exemplary behavior MONITOR STAFF well as the benefits to be derived from good school citizenship. We are in hopes that such ideal motives may al- ways tind champions in the persons of our students. Carol Bearry has the dis- tinction of having been the tirst chairman of such a group. Editorial Advisor Mr. Britvch Editor-in-Chief Frances Tomczewski Editorial Editor Virgina Howlett The slogan Of, By, and For the Students can best describe the purpose of our school newspaper, the Pointer. Under the leadership of Frances Tomciewski, and with the advice of sponsor, Mr. Britvch, the staff managed to pub- lish six issues this year. This was achieved in spite of financial difficulties due in part to a serious steel strike. The great cost of producing a publication of this sort is not readily known to most of the school population, but any serious thinking individual can easily see the advantages in the form of school spirit, valuable experience, and school pride to be gained by so worthwhile an endeavor. Frances' chief assistant this year was Virginia Howlett who gained much valuable experience in her position as editorial editor. This will en- able her to succeed Frances next year with some degree of confidence. Others assisting in this exacting work of publication were: Clara Eden- ton, Richard Moore, Carole Haag, Christine Cum- mins, and Cindy Godwin. l POINTER STAFF - STANDING, Left to Right: V. Hi-Points of 1960 got off to a good start this year even though we were hindered by a lack of funds due to the Steel Strike. Under the capable direction of advisor, Mr. Kosicki and Editor-in-Chief, Margaret Welsh, we rapidly progressed toward our final deadline. We had the usual problems of preceeding yearbook staffs. There were deadlines to meet, copy to write, pictures to take, and patrons and ads to sell. The assistant editors each carried out his individual responsi- bilities. Linda Rathke was Art Editor, Frances Hayes was Music Editor, Clyde Tressler and Margaret Leshko were Sports Editors, Connie Costenbader was Photography Editor, Margaret Welsh nfs '6 Business Advisor Mr. Ryder Business Editor Helen Weber N? Stephanie O'Hara and Mary Daybrowski were our Junior Assistants. The members of the business staff very efficiently carried out their duties under the direction of advisor, Mr. Ryder, and Business Manager, Helen Weber. Doris Turansky and Barbara Tippins were members of the staff. We on the yearbook staff hope that the student body will enioy the Hi-Points of 1960 as much as we enioyed working on it. The cast included Phil Ramage, Carol Bearry, Clyde Tressler, Jack Hicks, Molly Reistetter, Sanna Fe, Marcia Rogers, Richard Nizer, Melvin McFaul and Donna Wresh. The popularity with which the play was received gives hope that the efforts of the dramatics group will be repeated before the close of the school year. ocicfy NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY S ,Z Z E - ,,. ..... Diverswcd The D.O. program is a work experience program for seniors who wish to find their place in a world of work. It is a course that has sense appeal to many high school students who want a program of this type to better prepare themselves for the future. l Occupaiinns Looking out of 208's do-it-yourself window in September, we saw the beginning of the longest steel strike. Employment was hard to find in Edgemere. For most of us it was a year of riding buses and streetcars. We dined and studied on the Number I0 bus. Work ended at 9 P.M. A quick coke and a long trip home left us from midnight to 6 A.M. for homework. After a year of hard work and very little sleep, we faced the future with greater confidence. l i i Un: Graaf l6'0r1k 61116 THE LECTURERS TOP TO BOTTOM: Mr. Britvch, Mr. Dowling, Mrs. Kelly, Mr. Cale, Mr. Kosicki, Mr. McCune 32 The Great Books Club's Members -- Left to Right, TOP: B. Woodruff, C. Hayes, W. Schuerholz, W. Hicks, W. Raukko, L. Hart. BOTTOM: S. O'Hara, S. Stokes, M. Schoen, L. Dorset, G. Gzaplinski, M. Daybrowski, C. Gintling, J. Stockman, P. Wilson. The Great Books Club was formed under the sponsorship of the English Department in September i959 and functioned once every two or three weeks as an after-school activity under the direction of Mr. Britvch, the club's founder. This is the only club of its kind operating on the high school level in the state of Maryland. Members of the English Department, as well as other members of the faculty, felt that more could be done for the students who were capable and willing to read some of the finest works of art existing in the literary field. Reading, 'however, is not enough, the maior purpose of the club is to read and to discuss as completely as possible a great book in terms of: the literal meaning of the story, the form that is used, the significant historical and biographical back- ground, the sociological implications, the psychological insights, and the philoso- phical meanings, and finally the appreciation of the aesthetic values of the book. A visiting lecturer, which in most cases was a faculty member, gave a stimulat- ing talk on the book scheduled for a particular meeting. The meeting was then opened for discussion by members. The membership was limited so that there were never more than twenty mem- bers. Each member was carefully selected on the basis of ability, willingness to read, and potential participation in discussions. lf a student fell behind in the reading activities, he was dropped from the club. Some of the books read this year were: Walden, Thoreau, Lord Jim, Conrad, The Unvanquished, Faulker, David Copperfield, Dickens, Crime and Punishment, Dostoevski, The Return of the Native, Hardy, Great Tales and Poems, Poe, Jane Eyre, Bronte, Pride and Prejudice, Austen, Don Quixote, Cervantes, The Old Man and the Sea, Hemingway, and a few works by Shakespeare. 0 FRN W... xx ww - - mrs Q'--- K ' 1 ? STANDING, L. to R.: Manager R. Siron, P. Ramage, J. Hanson, R. Good, W. Raukko, Coach Sam Knisley, Manager R. Haley. The varsity basketball team no longer lives in the cellar. Our te-am, guided by Mr. Knisley, put a few digits in the win column fseven wins and eleven lossesb. The starting lineup consisted of only one senior, a circumstance which promises an excellent team next year. Good coaching, standout ball players, and excellent student support combined to give Sparrows Point the best varsity squad in many years. Although the iunior varsity could not boast many victories this year many of the team members promise to bolster the varsity team next year. ,Yuuiar Varsity Umm m .,.,.. .. All of us look back over the years when we began our senior high school life as stage hands. That year, important de- cisions had to be made as to which course was best for future plans. Also, we re- member our prom, Silhouettes, and the four-day Boston trip. Advancing from stage hands to under- studies, we entered our Junior year. During the course of that year, we were thrilled upon receiving our class rings, excited at winning Junior-Senior Day, and most pleased with the prom given for the sen- iors. Everyone agreed that our Junior year passed far too rapidly. At present, the Class of '60 is in the spotlight of activity at Sparrows Point High School. We have attended the Senior Prom and are looking forward to graduation. As the curtains close, we are well aware of what is ahead of us, and feel we have made the necessary preparations to meet the challenges of life. MR. CALE MISS INGALLS MR. I really loved it and had a great time with all of you. Your interest in my country and your friendliness toward me were two of the things I en- loyed most You never treated me like a stranger, but always like a good friend When I was in your school the first days, I was very confused But through your help I felt familiar with all I will never forget the year I lived here, with all the new things I learned heard and saw. I Someday I hope I will see this country again. Until then I Your Ann from Germany FINLAND As a member of the American Field Service, I went to Finland last summer. A very beautiful country with many wonderful people and customs, Finland holds a very dear place in my heart. I lived in Perna with the Rev. and Mrs. Hugo Glader, their two daughters, Judith and Kerstin, and son, Martin. It was very easy for me to adiust to my family in Finland because, from the beginning to the end of my stay there, I was one of the family. There are many memories I shall always cherish, such as the family picnics, visiting relatives, church and girl scout camping, swimming and rowing in the beautiful, clear water. My Finnish family had given me the love and understanding that we should all have in this world. I am anxious to return to Mamma and Pappa, my sisters and brother and plan to do so in five years. The American Field Service gives hundreds of students the opportunity to spread good will abroad and better United States relationships with other countries.
