We soon heralded our arrival by making a sweeping victory in the annual Halloween Festival, when under the guidance of Miss Craven we made our first of many big impressions. We went on to gain an unheard of success with the reco'd smashing minstrel show again directed and produced under the guidance of Miss Craven. This event filled the auditorium to capacity, which was quite an accomplishment for an eighth grade class. The following year saw the beginning of half sessions for the junior high school, and the resulting headaches for us, We were separated, disorganized, and unable to meet together as a class, all of which clearly caused president Skip Strasbaugh unprecedented problems. Nevertheless we survived, having blazed two trails through the ninth grade to a hard won reunification in the tenth. As sophomores, president George Hellems had to work hard to overcome the indifference and lethargy which were legacies of the old half session days in junior high school. Choice of a class project sharply divided the class-so much so that the final choice of new curtains for the auditorium never did reach the stage of fruition. We certainly did entertain great ambitions in those days. By the end of the year somewhat of the old spirit began to return as evidenced by a very successful prom, Blue Mrage, As juniors we again won the Halloween Festival giving junior president Charles Darby a vote of confidence for his duties of leadership ahead. Defeat on junior-senior day dampened our spirits temporarily, but we recovered sufficiently to organize the beautiful and immensely successful prom, Aloha. lt was about this time that we knew for certain that we would be privileged to be the first graduating class of a new and bigger Sparrows Point High School and appropriately enough again revived the auditorium curtain project. Then there we were-seniors, the top class, and in a bright new school building. Furthermore we would go down in history as the first of many graduating classes to commence from all of this modern opulence. At times, though we might think nostalgically of the old building and events there, we would never wish to return after once having had the luxury of the new. Our only regret was that the succeeding classes could not have shared this experience of moving from the old to the new and hence have developed a similar appreciation, one in which we feel we are unique . . . ,s l . jk 'K 117-3 5 9 ff tif vi 'ILA 8 MRS. A resident of Nice, France, Huguette came to us in early August to spend the school year as a member of the class of '57. She isasmall, dark haired girl whose impish smile has endeared her to the hearts of the entire student body. Her laughter has brightened many cloudy days with its hearty, genuine quality. Her favorite sports are swimming and basketball. Huguette can always be found in the cheering section at the Pointer's basketball games. Her school spirit and interest in this and other activities have in- spired all who have known her. She is a contributing member of the F.T.A., the Spooks, Tri-Hi-Y, and the Student Government Association. She also is an accomplished pianist as evidenced by her studies at the Peabody Conservatory of Music where she has won a scholarship. We feel that after her return to France, Huguette will become one of the leaders in world fellowship due to her experiences in this country. Hav- ing Huguette with us this year entitles us to send a member of our student body abroad to spend this summer as a member of a European household. The finalists are Bonnie McGrogan, D. Young, D. Williams, and Peggy Maguire. REMEMBER . . . Q 1 51:94 r aff 5179 KJ S The Flag Presentation? 4,. The vnp to New York? The camera curses? Newly appointed to the position of principal, Mr. Paul Dowling has become the central force of the administrative duties of our school. Skillfully and graciously assisting, under the official title of vice principal, Miss Elsie Krug has done much in improving and sustaining better work and understandings among the senior high students. Working with the junior high students, we find Mr. Robert Eads, who, during his first year here, has accepted the responsibilities of Administrative Assistant. Functioning jointly, this staff has set new standards, and revised others, yet they always consider what is the best for the entire school. Thus, their work is an asset and has so far been very successful. Checking detention lists, constitutes one of Miss Krug's maior r. Eadsreviewsacase study. duties. Mr. Dowling receives many phone calls during the course of a busy day lt in-Q, NA le SPECIAL SECRETARIES-Efficient and very personable are Miss Sisk, Miss Deale, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Burkhouse, the of- fice secretaries. Their skills and readiness to assist are definitely appreciated and add much to the smooth func- tioning of our school. T' ca Qffig Two new-comers to Sparrow Point, Mrs. Craft and Mr. Simon, have done much to counsel the student body. Also new to her position here is Mrs. Miller, our nurse. Her professional supervision of the new and modern health suite is very important to everyone in the school. Both of these services are valuable and should be highly regarded. Our beautiful library, under the direction of Miss Saffel and Mrs. Thomas, is one of the centers of maximum activity, The library staff cer- tainly has a big iob, and discharge it in a capable manner. They have been especially co-operative with the students even though spending considerable time organizing the new works and materials as well. 452 SERVICES Y' X ., 44 y 'lute' . . ,fT-.g-- Q .-'H ll MR. BIGWOOD-Oftentimes, we overlook those who are responsible for several large, but unrewarding duties about the school. These iobs add up to quite a lot of hard work. Since coming to Sparrows Point, Mr. Big- wood has managed the trading post, balanced the cafeteria books, and acted on many committees in- volving the welfare of students and faculty alike. iq ,mfr ffb--A u 4- SENIOR HIGH LANGUAGE and JOURNAL ISM In the English departments varlous stages of grammar are betng studued The ltterature sectnon Includes drama stones from different geographical areas of the Unnted States and foremgn countries and poetry Fnrst and second year French class es are taught by Mr Swearmgen Acttng as the Edltonal Advtsor for the lournalusm class IS Mr Cruckard Mvss Reugseggar M Swearlngen M Hackman M Crnckard The Class of 57 would luke to thank our faculty for the assistance and guldance they have glv en dunng our years at the Sparrows Pount .lun nor Sensor Hugh School Q JUNIOR CORE Our Jumor Hugh students are taught Englnsh Hlstory and Spellmg ln thetr Core classes These essentnal sublects are taught by Mr Weuss Mr Tomeo Mrs Savage Mass Wall Mr Eckard Mr Gust Mr Rooney Mr Drummer Mr Baker Mr Copunger Mr Kashen and Mr LaGrath il- SENIOR HISTORY World Hlstory Amen can Hnstory and Problems In Dernocratnc Ltvnng are the formal trtles for the htstory classes for the tenth eleventh and twelfth grades respectnvely Mrs Pruchard Mrs Leltzel Mrs Kaneen and Mr Cale CULTY We are confndent that the knowledge gained wlll be a valid asset when facing the many new horizons throughout our Ives SENIOR SCIENCE Whrchever scuence freld Interests you bnology chemlstry physlcs or consumer scuence you are sure to en roy and learn a great deal under the very capable supervusuon of our scuence teach ers Mr Muller Mr Benson and Mr Sakal SENIOR MATHEMATICS In the mathe mattcs department are Mr Kosnck: and Mr Gorman They conduct classes In Plane Geometry Trngonometry Revnew math and Algebra ,, ,, . 1, r f ..- JUNIOR MATH, AND SCIENCE--Teaching the fundamentals of general mathematics and science are Mr. Yeater, Mr. Paugh, Mr. Wheeler, Mr. Fitzgerald, Mr, Picelc, Mr. Ryan and Mr Curtis. iw VOCATIONAI. JU IOR-SENICJR DAY The Plaque In our school there are times set aside when the Junior and Senior classes can compete with each other in various sporting events, On these days there is keen competition for everyone has been looking forward to the games in which both girls' and boys' teams can compete. These activities occur on school time and are enioyed by everyone who attends, as Junior-Senior Day gives the mem- bers of the participating classes an opportunity to exercise class spirit by a display of class colors and cheering prowess. Each of the two classes can accumulate points by the victories of their various playing teams. The class gaining the most points is commemorated on the permanent plaque. At the time of publication it was still too soon to tell which of the highly enthusiastic classes would win this year. As a promotion to school spirit no one can doubt the success of the periodic Junior-Senior Days. S gxowty WSTPRY ENGLISH 'Q X' 3 Aural .' f ,lf I IA This year was characterized by adding responsibilities and obstacles never be- fore encountered by the members of the Junior class. The Junior year was the turning point. in school life for all of us. Seriousness, for the most part, replaced the l don't care attitude as we realized that in the not too distant future we were to be looked to by under- classmen as leaders in school. With this outlook and a great deal of enthusiasm we launched our program of activities foremost among which were a ring dance, the first ever held at S.P.H.S., and the traditional Junior-Senior prom. These activities, among others, developed the latent ingenuity and cooperative attitude which is now apparent in the class of 1958: Our successes and failures have contributed to the knowledge we shall need as Seniors and even more important, as individuals in later life. We shall gain even more experiences in preparation for our role next year when this June we shall assist at the commencement exercises of the.present Senior class.
