There were 18 girls and boys who found their way up to the hill to the grade school at Spar- lan Car d. They were: Dorothy Allison, Jack Ankron, olyn Brown, Lois Bryden, Larry Buck,Alfred Dav- is, Betty Dawson, Mary Dewalt, Duane Flock,Charles Hawksworth, Jack Kear, Hary Lopeman, Norman Macumb- er, Agnes Moss, Eldon Moss, Leslie Nighsonger,Henry Rennau, Jack Ross. This first grade class was taught by Miss Estelle Kelhenback. Going into second grade we not only gained a new teacher, Miss Alice Cunningham, but four new classmates, those being Betty Ingram, John Babing- ton, Robert Shipley, and Danny Middour. Those leav- ing us were Mary Lopeman, Lgnes Moss, Eldon Moss, Hen an, Thi ry Rennau, and Jack Ankron. Moving across the hall we acquired Ruth Hatt- Franklin Schultz, and Anna Kear to the class s and the fourth grade were taught by Miss Wil mina Monier. In the fourth grade we were joined by three new smiling faces, Martha Eckhoff, Lloyd Mercer, and Patricia Schupp. Departing from the class were Mary Dewalt, Ruth Hattan, and Franklin Schultz. As ambitious fifth graders we approached the year where we could have a room upstairs and with us went five new classmates: Charles Downey,Nancy Downey, Marshall Spellious, Donald Gawitz, and Ruth Engelbrecht. Moving away this year were Betty Daw son and Lloyd Mercer. Miss Fern Frank was the teacher for our Sth and 6th grade years. And to this 6th grade class came Robert Greiner,Ellen Pow- ell, Shirley Holler, and rejoining us again was Betty Dawson. Only two were missing from the roll call this year, those being Charles Downey and Les lie Nighsonger. Feeling most dignified we entered into the Junior High with Miss Eleanor Bussell as teacher. Added to our group was Larry Wilkins. Nineteen forty-six found this class of 17 eighth grade students anxious to enter into High School. And if you were at the Eighth Grade Graduation of the class of '46 these people you would have seen on the stage: Dorothy Allison, Carolyn Brown, Lois Bryden,Larry Buck, Betty Dawson, Martha Eckhoff, Ruth Engelbrecht, Robert Greiner, Charles Hawksworth, Jewell Haycraft, Shirley Holler, Ellen Powell, John Ross, Jerres Jane Powell,Pat- ricia Schupp, Marshall Spellious, and Larry Wilkins. This night of graduation was full of excitement as well as the prospective hope of a joyful four years in High School Summer vacation soon hurried by again staring us right in the face. ent, we were going into High looking forward to for eight Mary Lou Giugler, and Vernon and here was school But this was differ- School, something we had been long years. Carol Bennett, Girdler joined us while Shir- ley Holler and Jerres Jane Powell moved away. And so we started on our way to becoming Seniors as we began school as green freshies. Mr. Lurain was our sponsor. As silly Sophomores Jean Burnett Joined us and leav- ing us was Jewell Haycraft. This year our sponsor was Mr Jones. We were finally on our way and were looking for- ward to our Junior year. Progressing very rapidly we climbed to the class of Jolly Juniors. This year we ents since we started in the had the least number of stud- first grade, 14 was the full count. Gaining Patricia Mattingly and Richard Webber. And losing Dorothy Allison, Ruth ous, Larry Wilkins, and Jean received our class rings and then at the last of the year the idea of having a prom at very well and was enjoyed by advisor this year. Engelbrecht, Marshall Spelli- Burnett. On February 16th we were we proud of them. And the Junior Class introduced the school. This turned out all. Mr. Turnbull was our As most Seniors would say HI have finally made itlu We are the Senior Class of nineteen hundred and fifty. We have reached the height which we have so long studied for. During our Senior year we have had Senior pictures taken, we are looking forward to a very nice trip, and also hope that the Junior Prom is as nice as the one we put on. We have had the pleas- ure of putting out the Annual and the School Paper. We are all looking forward to Baccalaureate, Class Night, and Graduation. Our sponsors this year were Mr. Glen Turnbull and Miss Leuella Parlier. And those who are in this graduating class of 1950 are as follows: Carol Bennett, Carolyn Brown, Larry Buck, Lois Bryden, Betty Dawson, Martha Eckhoff, Robert Greiner, Mary Lou Giug- ler, Charles Hawksworth, Ellen Powell, John Ross, Pat- ricia Schupp, Donzld Weekly, Rich Webber, James Curry, Patricia Mattingly, Bill Kelly, and Imogene Kenyon. Glover,we give the good grades we received in the pest year so he may pass them on to the seniors of next year. To the Juniors, we give the choice seats of the study hell, next to the windows so that they can be more conveniently located to see each car that passes by.Mey they not over use this great privilege. They may also use the gum left under these desks in any way desirable. We hope they remain as well flavored es when we left them CLASS PROPHECY It was nearing midnight when my escort and I strolled into the HGypsy Tea Roomn to bring a quiet ending to our evening on the town. A small orchestra in the corner was playing softly, striving to be heard over the murmuring people and tinkling of the glasses. Relaxing, we sipped our tea reminiscing of days gone by. A little old gypsy came by our table with a crystal ball in her hand. She asked us if we would like to know what the future held for us. We were in a.mood to be amused so naturally we said yes. Seating herself, she leaned mysteriously over- her crystal ball--murmuring gibbishe that I could not understand. Finally she seemed satisfied. HAh,H she said, HI see faces crossing my crystal ball now. Zee first one I see ees that of Ellen Pow- ill. Ellen has realized her beeg amtition. She ees now a joint partner weeth Fred Astaire. She helps him run hees dancing studios. The name of zee studios has been changed to HAstaire and Powell Dancing School-Walk In and Waltz Out.H Zee face is fading away and now comes that of Donald Weekly. Don has become zee successor of Charles Atlas and has hees manly physi- qpe pictured een every leading magazine. Don says it is not hard to be a real man--just remember to eet your wheaties every morning. I sat quietly thinking of how our Don had succeeded in the world.H Suddenly, the Gypsy murmured in a strange voice, Hand now, there crosses zee chreestyl ball an image, surrounded by leetle children--seven boys. Why, eet is that of Mares Lou Giugler Winkler. Mares Lcu's husband prunes trees. Says Mary Lou, with a twinkle in her eye, 'My husband is full of prunes'.She dances away now from my chreestyl ball and in her place I see a eek!!!--oh, it is just zee face of John L.CLover-Boy? Ross. John is now HThe Great Lovern of Hollywood. His form graces many a movie screen and his lovely bass voice rings out to threel the bobby-soxers. Hees face fades away now and ees replaced by that of Nurse Pat- reecia Schupp. Nurse Patreecia Schupp is an indispensable asset at St. Francis Hospital. Her work ees done ien the old men's ward. Says Pat with a sign, 'And I thought I would get to work with those handsome interns'. And now I see zee face of a grease-monkey ---- you know, a mechanic. Eet ees that of William E. Kelly. Bill owns his own garage now. He says he owes all he knows to his faithful old maroon and black Chevie which he drove in hees high school days. His helper at the garage ees hees leetle wife, Betty Dawson. Beell says proudly that eet ees she who draws the customers.Betty seems happy at her job, watching over Beell, the gas station, her home, and the twin boys, Pat and Hike. But, now, these faces are fading away and the eemage of Janes Francis Curry now graces the chreestal ball. Jim is now married to a French girl he was while he was staggering across the finish line of thc mile in the Olympics. My, l'll bet old Coach Glover would be proud to know one of his Sparland Proteges had made good in the world of sports. And now appears the face of Pat Mattingly, who has finally realized her one ambition to be a cracker jack reporter. She is now assistant editor for the New York Times. Pat earned this position by being the first to get the story on the Great Sparland Fire, which in every way equalled that of the Chicago Fire. Ahh--now I see the face of the Sheriff of Marshall County--Sheriff Richard Webber. Dick is following in the steps of his Grandfather and is doing his part to bring law and order to the wild and wooly Marshall Pootman Counties. He just hauled in who he through was the dan- gerous criminal HKiller Katien but who turned out to be Carolyn Brown. She was trying to get into her own house, but lost her key, so tried to get in an open window. Sheriff Webber caught her in the act. Before all was straightened out it was discovered that Carolyn ees now the wife of a prominent business man, her former boss. Now I see zee face of Bob Greiner. Bob ees now Professor of Trigonometry at C. C. N. Y. in New York. Quite a few people do not approve of his teaching there They still remember the C. C. N. Y. basketball team who Wrobbedn Bradley back in 1950. But Bob seems to be doing O. K. Zee face of Martha Eckhoff now brightens my chr- eestyl ball--she ees talking a mile a minute. She married a famous auotioneer and they have great times trying to out talk one another. She and her husband are watching a television screen--where appears the face and physique of NChuckieN Hawksworth, the croon- er comedian. HChuckH has a wonderful crowd of fans following him, not only bobby-soxers, but grandma's too. Ah, how well I remember HChuck'sH winning per- sonality--he really could put over a song, too. I see hees assistant on the program ees a girl you know, too, Lois Bryden. She seengs duets weeth HChuckieH as well as taking care of the business part of his program. Rumors have it they are secretly engaged. Their faces are now fading and who do I see stroll- ing across the ball but Mees Carol Bennett. Carol ees now the head of the lonely hearts club which has its headquarters een the old Sparland High School building. Caro1's speciality is finding mates for lonely old maids. And now her face fades away. Eet ees replaced by that of a handsome young man running from a group of beautiful women. Why, eet is that of Larry Buck, Bachelor. Larry seems to be having a hard time try- ing to keep the she-wolves off. He always was a lady-killer. The Gypsy stops talking now and sits motionless over the crystal ball. My escort and I just sat think- ing over what she had told us. The Senior Class of '50 has done all right in this cruel old world. Well, it's getting late, we must be going home. The Junior Play was presented April 14, 1950, the title being HMama Had A Hunchu. The customary Prom was given to the Seniors by the Juniors on April 29, 1950. We were well represented in extra-curricular acti vities with most of the boys out for sports, and the girls were represented by one cheerleader, this being Verla Oltman. We are proud of our class, and we are looking forward to the work in the coming year as Seniors of Sparland High School. SOPHOHORE NEWS The class of H52H is looking forward to the da when we can walk upon the stage and receive our dip lomas, although we are enjoying our second year at Sparland High School. We started the year by electing officers. We elected the following: President .... Robert Griswold Vice President...Lewis Buck Secretary .... Jeanne Wallace Treasurer .... Donald Russell Student Council.huRichard Bogner T Archie Gauwitz Advisor ...... Mr. Glover Assistant Advisor...Miss Hadley We had four new members this year. They were Archie Gauwitz, Donald Russell, Eileen Burkholder, and Jack Kingcn. We were glad to have them and we hope to have many more before HSEH. The subjects we are taking this year are bio- logy, algebra, English, history, home economics and Agriculture. Irma and Grace are the only ones who took Latin. Several of us took Drivers Education the first semester. We had a class party Friday, October seventh. It was a weincr roast back in the timber. We are looking forward to next year when we can call ourselves UJolly Juniorsn. The main reason is that we get our class rings. I think we will agree that the past year has been a joy- ful one for the Sophomore Class. Y Freshman Class of 1949-50 On September 7, 1949, the class of '55 entered the doors of Sparland High School. A little afraid but happy with our new surroundings. The following class officers were chosen at our first meeting: President ....... ...Herman Barnett Vice-President .... ...Bob Bennett Secretary ............. Ted Streitmatter Treasurer ............. Allen Davis Newspaper Reporter .... Mary Mattingly Student Council Representatives,Carolyn Webber, and Wendell Hoskins Advisor ............... Miss Buss Assistant Advisor.....Mrs. Phillippo September 25rd was the first class party. It was a hay-ride. Everyone came for a warm evening of fun. Finally the most exciting day of the year came on October llth ---- Initiation! The girls were dress- ed as farmers, with overalls and such. The boys were dressed as girls with dresses and 1ipstick.A1l were given a piece to say to the seniors on bended knees. The Math class would always have been dull if it wasn't for that dignified senior, Bill Kelly, who always kept us supplied with laughs. The girls P. E. was enjoyed by all, although there were quarrels over what games were going to be played and who the referees were going to be. English Class, taught by Mrs. Phillippo, was al- ways interesting. There was never a dull moment during the Fresh- man Year and all are looking forward to being Sophomores TYPING ROOM FRONT ROW: Joyce Juryg Mary Lou Giuglerg Pet Mattinglyg Angeline Gries. We won nine games against fourteen losses, which is a record to be proud of. One of the best games of the season with Glasford on their floor. We beat a was the game team that tow ered over us in height. We had quite a few losses before we won another game but we won several afterwards. Our best game of the year was played against did-County on their floor where we defeated them by nineteen points which made up for the beating we suffered earlies in the season from them. We were beaten out of the Tri-County tournament the first night by Henry by a fairly close margin. We made a good showing in the District tournament by copping the first two games, only to suffer defeat at the hands of Long Point. This put us in second place instead of the coveted first place which would have sent us on to Regional. X All in all, the school is proud of the fine showing made by the team, cheerleaders, and rooters at the games This ended one of Spar1and's best seasons with a large percentage of games won. A9 4 CHEERLEADERS The cheerleaders for Sparland High School's basketball team were Betty Dawson, Pat Mattingly, Ellen Powell, and Verla Oltman. The cheerleaders did an outstanding job this year, cheering the team on to victory. They were present at every game to give the team a lift in morale when needed. Sparland High considers them as seldom equalled and never excelled. Three of the cheerleaders will graduate this year. They are Pat Mattingly, Betty Dawson, and Ell- en Powell. Pat served as cheerleader for two years, Ellen for two years, and Betty for four years. This is Verla's first year as cheerleader. We hope that next year's cheerleaders can carry on the fine work of those who will be gone. GIRL'S PHYSICAL EDUCATION With our advisor, Miss Parlier, the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes enjoyed parti- cipating in many sports. Junior and Senior girl's class was held the fourth hour. The freshman and sophomore girl's class was held sixth hour. During the year we participated in the follow- ing activities: Girl's baseball, basketball, kick ball, volley ball, relays, badminton, tennis and bowling. They even named their new home HPeacehavenN, so peaceful and happy was their married life. But alas! Stella had a fam- ily, ruled over by her domineering mother, who lives up to her name of Nagg. Of all the mothers-in-law in fiction or reality, Mrs. Noah Nagg is the limit! Her poor, downtrocden, henpecked husband doesn't dare call his soul his own. Together with Stel1a's younger sister, Ima, Hr. and Hrs. Nagg descend on HPeacehavenN, for a visit- Stella's brother, Willie, who aspires to be a writer, has already been visiting there. Noah had bought his wife a piano for an anniv- ersary gift, but as she hates music, Noah suggests to Jack that the piano be moved to hPeacehavenH. Jack readily assents but has the piano put in the summer house to have it tuned and repaired before surprising Stella with it. He takes a former horse doctor,UDocH Knott into his confidence- NDocN is also a piano tun- er and a jack-of-all-trades- By trying to keep the piano a secret, their mysterious actions arouse the suspicions of the very suspicious Hrs- Nagg, who pois- ons her daughter's mind against Jack. She believes him to be concealing some deep-dyed secret from Stella In the meanwhile, Miss Lotta Sayles, a literary agent, who is handling Willie's writings, arrives to confer with Willie. When she asks for Mr. Hagg, the old mother-in-law believes that she is seeking her hus- band, immediately junping to the conclusion that poor, innocent Noah has been carrying on a flirtation. The arrival of Dolly White, a dramatic instructress, who came to give Ima dramatic lessons, adds further com- plications, as Hrs. Nagg always puts the wrong im- plication on everything. Things get to such a state that Jack blows up the summer house with dynamite,to destroy the piano, .This brings in the police! Well, it's just one laughable complication-after'another, until all is straightened'out'and the nagging Mrs. Nagg is tamedi BAND NEWS During the summer the band took a trip to Spring- field to play at the State Fair where they took second place. Every two weeks a band concert was given at the Sparland High School for the benefit of the public, and to keep the band members in practice. As the school year began the band started practic- ing for the Pumpkin Festival, held at Eureka, Illinois, on September 1949. Following that was the Peoria Santa Claus Parade, which was on November 25th. The band also welcomed Santa in Chillicothe and Henry. The Henry parade was also a marching contest, and Sparland came home with a first Place trophy. Ellen Powell, the drum majorette, received a baton for her ability to lead the band. The basketball season began and the band was on hand to help pep the boys up at a number of the home fames. On February 22nd the Grade School Twirling Contest was held at Henry, Illinois. This contest was also a preliminary contest for the High School twirlers who wanted to enter the High School contest. There were seventeen members for the first semester, and eleven the second. All of the meetings were held in the Science Room with other outside classes in the Driver's Training Car, which was donated by the Henry Motor Club. During the year the members of the class studied how to manipulate the car and then also what makes the car work. The importance of being a good and safe driver was stress ed through out the course.
