July 4, 1904 was the so called day of the big move , when the Southern Pacific Railroad arranged to move an entire town of seventy houses from Wadsworth to a meadow three miles east of Reno. This marked the beginning of what is now called Sparks, Nevada. Southern Pacific made the move into this area because they felt it would be more efficient being closer to a big town. Proposed names for this new town were many, Some of the people thought they should call it New Wadsworth or Harriman. lt became Glendale for a while until they changed it to Sparks, in honor of the governor, John Sparks, Having all those families move here from Wadsworth meant a school would have to be built in order for the children of those people to receive educations, A 330,000 bond issued by the Nevada State Legislature, a piece of land donated by the subdivider N.C. Prater Co., and the services of an early architect named Kronick resulted in the building of a fine two-story brick structure with a full basement on the site ofthe present Robert Mitchell school to house all classes. In 1909, the first graduating class of Sparks numbered three. The first yearbook, titled Sparks was published in 1915. The growth was rapid up until World War I. The population of 3,238 by then required a separate high school building, which occupied the city block bounded by 14th and 15th streets, and C and D streets. The Class of 1918 started its senior year at Fiobert Mitchell, but moved to the 15th street school at the conclusion of the first semester. ln 1921 enrollment grew to a total of fourteen seniors, seventeen juniors, thirty sophomores, and fifty-one freshmen. ln 1927, the yearbook known as Sparks became known as Terminus in honor of our heritage as a railroad division point. By the end of the 1920's the population in Sparks grew to 4,303 The War years and those that followed saw a 54 Wo growth in Sparks' population in the 40's and 103 'Vo in the 50's. Its population of 13,000 led to yet another move, as the building of a new Sparks High School was begun. The Class of 1952 was the first graduating from this new and present building. ln 1975 a graduating class of 393 was a record for the growth of our student body, which prompted the construction of yet another high school for the city of Sparks.
