Nevada was the thirty-sixth state to join the union, and became a state during the critical years of the War Between the States. Throughout the years of statehood, Nevadans have been strong in support of American democracy. The bicentennial celebration is a time to re- joice in the 200th birthday of our nation, and to give to our children It is a time to in our history, an understanding of the patriots' dream. reflect on the things which have occurred and to attempt to understand those things which have made us great, as well as our frailties. Then, in the light of our understanding of our heritage, and with a realistic assessment of where we are today, we can begin to plot the future course for this country.
