Nevada was the thirty-sixth state to join the union, and became a state during the critical years of the War Between the States. Throughout the years of statehood, Nevadans have been strong in support of American democracy. The bicentennial celebration is a time to re- joice in the 200th birthday of our nation, and to give to our children It is a time to in our history, an understanding of the patriots' dream. reflect on the things which have occurred and to attempt to understand those things which have made us great, as well as our frailties. Then, in the light of our understanding of our heritage, and with a realistic assessment of where we are today, we can begin to plot the future course for this country. In this way, the bicentennial will serve as a milestone on which future accomplishments can be built. Sincerely, I F Mike O'Callaghan Governor of Nevada What does a Senator do in Washington? Our many accomplishments and successes have taught us invaluable lessons as we prepare for what lies ahead. Nevadans have learned that bumps and bruises are also good learning tools. The only goal of the company was to build a round house and machine shops for easier service of rolling stock and crews. ln December l90l Southern Pa- cific Railroad purchased a 40 acre track of land. Work on graiding and laying new track began in Spring of 1902 and construction of the new shops and round house started in August of l903. The railroad increased their plans to cover a strip of land one mile long by halfa mile wide. The Nevada Historical Society has furnished all pictures on these Iwo pages except the new ter- minal construction on pg. 13 which was furnished bythe Sparks Tribune. ,L , i l . MAIN STREET WADSWORTH, NEV THE WADSWORTH RR TERMINAL THAT WAS TRANSFERRED TO SPARKS MOVING DAY WADSWORTH WAS PACKED UP WHEN S.P. ANNOUNCED THE MOVE Between 1903 and 1904 some 300 Railroaders and their families along with their houses, furniture, cows, and pets were relocated by the Southern Pacific to the new town of Harriman, named after SP Superintendant Mr. Harriman, which the Railroad had created. In a 1941 newspaper story, this ac- count ol' the move was told by Herbert F. McDonald, former S.P. assistant chief dispatcher, It was a strange sight, hc re- calls, Seeing those private homes and railroad houses sawed into sections, then loaded onto flatcars and moved over here, leaving only lawns and- trees behind. All em- ployees who owned their homes in Wadsworth were given lots lfrom the section of town called the 'Reserve'l in the new townsite which when first plotted was known as 'Harriman'. The Re- serve was a section of land the Railroad bought along the yard now the north side of B St. Lots in the Reserve were chosen by seniority. In March of 1903, the town of Harriman was renamed Sparks after Nevada Governor Sparks. Rail yards and shops on one side with business's and homes on the other. During the 20's Sparks had the Bank of Sparks, a U.S. Post Office, a Telegraph Office, several stores, shops and elaborate boarding houses that serviced train crews. Sparks even got power light, water, and telephone services. - - I I ,--I 'f5l:Q'L' A H Ku -7 H 2 f , - H -- :. Many years ago, the Tribune was an integral part of the B Street scene. In fact, in those days, B Street was Sparks. The paper is remembered by old-timers, depending on their ages, on B Street between llth and 12th Streets, on llth Street just a door off B Street, or at 6th and B Streets. In recent years, however, under the ownership of Matie and Stan Barker and, presently, Don and Lynn Woodward, the Trib has been located on Marieta Way in the industrial district and in offices located in the Professional Building in Greenbrae. With rekindled interest in B Street and the new Bicentennial town center plan, the Tribune has made plans to return to that area. The move during the summer will take the Tribune and its sister publication, the Big Nickel, into facilities purchased at the northwest corner of 10th and C Streets, the building occupied for many years by the city post office. In addition to acquiring its first newspaper-owned plant and offices, the Tribune has developed new growth and vigor during the Bicentennial. Because of higher costs of production and mailing, the management was forced to develop a new delivery system starting in March 1975. After contracting services of others, the Tribune began its own distribution service in October. Now a crew of 54 paperboys and girls work late Wednes- day afternoons to deliver the Tribune to almost every home in Sparks. The circulation, which has been about 2500 for many years, jumped in six months to 10,000 and is still climbing. These new developments add another interesting chapter to a publication that has an up-and-down career for 70 years. It has been a weekly, a bi-weekly, a tri-weekly, and a short-lived daily. And there were several predecessors to the Tribune-in the days when newspapering was more adventuring than business. When the city of Sparks came into being, having been moved here, for the most part from Wadsworth when the Southern Pacific shifted its division point yards, the first newspaper to make an appearance was the Har- riman Herald, established Jan. 16, 1904, by H.W. Dalton. It was a weekly and the name derived from the fact that the new community was first named Harriman in honor of the president of the railroad. But Harriman was modest and insisted that his name be removed. The residents wanted their town called Glendale but the U.S. Post Office said there was already a town in California by that name, so the town was named Sparks, for the governor of Nevada, J ohn Sparks, who owned a ranch in Washoe Valley and the Wede- kind Mine, north of town. From 1905 to August of 1910 when the Sparks Tribune began publication as a tri-weekly, two other news- papers were published in the community. Neither the Sparks Dispatch nor Nevada Forum was able to continue publication, the former ending Dec. 1905 and the later Mar. 1910. lf you look closely .. . you'll see the sign Sparks Tribune on the building to the right of the livery stable lbuilding with pointed top, open front doors.J - .: Fqfzg zfgfafreb, ..,Q 3. r Q .,'. -K 4 1 a ' HB? in 1 Predecessor companies of Sierra Pa- cific Power Co. have played a part in Nevada's colorful history and growth. .jig if F Va aj A . .K 5 Smce the 1880s, when a predecessor of C h 2 ' Q Q 2 -He' L Sierra Pacific be an rovidin elec- ' f A f 8 P S fFtf:','A'vK',L,. i7 ' i 1 W 4 ,2e' . y I t h. h .d d' th t af?- -fQf !:,...'-2 2. BE.. Sierra Pacific Power Curnpang Four more hydroelectric plants were later built on the Truckee. Three of these plants are still helping to meet today's energy needs. By 1923 the increasing demands for electricity in the Truckee Meadows led to the construction of an interconnecting line traversing the Sierra Ne- vada Mountains from California to Reno and Sparks. You have to be a mountain goat to work on that line is the way the young linemen of 1923 de- scribed the project. From Donner Summit eastward the line leaped from rock to rock. Setting the poles was a matter of drill and blast, drill and blast in the hard granite. We tried to get some dirt around the poles, but mostly it was just a question of packing rock in the holes, says one Sierra Pacific veteran who worked on the line. Cedar poles were unloaded from a nearby railroad line and floated downstream to the most convenient landings, where teams of horses took over to drag them into po- sition. In 1960 Sierra Pacific embarked on another era. By now power pro- duced from the Truckee was in- adequate to serve Western Nevada's increasing requirements. Sierra Pacific decided that the growing Truckee Meadows would be better served with its own gen- eration plants which would make Sierra Pacific selfreliant. In the 1960s and 1970s steam gen- eration plants were built at Tracy Power Station, 14 miles east of Sparks and Fort Churchill Power Station near Yerington. For the 1980s a coal-fired plant, now in the development stages, is to be completed near Battle Mountain. Since the early 1900s when Sierra's hydroelectric plants were operating along the Truckee, complex ma- chinery has replaced physical labor in many instances to make line maintenance and easier. With the continued growth of the and northern construction Truckee Meadows Nevada, Sierra Pacific, as in the past, must continually plan for the future . . . During WWII Mr. Ross would photograph children of servicemen in their homes and then sell these photos to the mothers for mailing to their husbands. This started his interest in photography and in April of 1946 he opened the first Ross Photo at 1520 B St. in Sparks. As business in Sparks grew he felt it neces- sary to open a studio in Reno and did so in 1950. During the course of the years Mr. Ross had four studios in Reno and one at Stead Air Force Base. In 1959 Ross Photo moved from B St. to its present location at 1845 Prater Way. Ross Photo became a Nevada Corporation in 1963. During that same year the studio expanded to include a music and camera store. The music portion of this store was sold in 1969. A major change in operation took place in May of 1973 when Mr. Ross retired and studio operations were taken over by Brent Ross, Tom White, Helen Radmall, and Kaz Fujimoto. Today Ross Photo continues as a major intluence in the photo industry of Northern Nevada. Our current location at 1845 Prater Way in Sparks The original Real Estate West - soon to be enlarged - with the Znd. office already on Pyramid Way Patrick Higgins of Patrick Higgins Real Estate West did not arrive in Sparks as an already successful business- man . . . having made a small bank loan in early 1960 to open a small Restaurant-Cocktail Lounge in down- town Sparks, known as Patrick Higgins Bit O'Erin, an old building was remodeled into an atmosphere de- picting an Old Irish Pub , creating one of Sparks favorite gathering places. Recognizing Sparks as a City with great potential and a City with much promise, Patrick ventured in Real Estate Sales and Investments, eventually creating one of Sparks more successful Real Estate Businesses. Real Estate West was established as a one-man office in 1969, converting an old service station into Sparks leading Real Estate Firm today . .. each year since its inception Sales Volume has increased over 'A million dollars, with a staff of six persons presently and the establishment of a Branch Office on Pyramid Way that is planned for three additional Staff Members in 1976. Anticipating an economically sound future for Sparks, Patrick Higgins purchased the old Gepford Apartments at l5th and Prater Way one block from Sparks High, the apartments are now known as Patrick Higgins Apartments and the Country Store. Pat says, Only in America can a young man or woman start with virtually nothing and reach the pinnacle of Success . He believes everyone, sometime or another, gets the feeling of a Medieval Knight with a quest to make our Community a better place to live . . . he, too, gets the feeling and Sparks is the best place in the world to exercise that feeling. t 1940 ew of Sp SPARKS KEEPS RIGHT ON C3RKJVVIPJCi 1975 0 fl .Y .feeees mfr N- ln 1976 there are 25,000 working telephones in Sparks and an- other 4,000 serving neighboring Sun Valley. There are nearly 150,000 telephones in service in the Truckee Meadows serving a population shown by the 1970 census to be 121,068 and today estimated to be more than 145,000. But 100 years ago in 1876, Sparks was not yet Sparks. Reno, formerly Lake's Crossing, occupied the area along the Truckee River that today is part of both Sparks and Reno. The 1870 cen- sus showed 1,035 persons in the community. In his Boston laboratory 2,500 miles away, Alexander Graham Bell toiled over the world's only two telephones. On February 14, 1876, he had filed his patent application for Improvement in Telegraphyf' On March 7, the first telephone patent-U.S. No. 174,465-was issued to him. On March 10, the first complete sentence was transmitted by telephone when Bell spilled acid on his lab apron and shouted, Mr, Watson. Come here. I want to see you! Those two telephones, painstakingly perfected by Bell and his associate Thomas Watson, were the beginning of a world-wide telecommunications revolution in which Nevada has played a part. By the beginning of 1975, there were 359 million telephones in service around the world-144 million of them in the United States-and almost all of them tied together by a complex com- munications network of circuitry that permits instantaneous com- munication to almost any corner ofthe globe. The first appearance of Bell's telephone in Nevada was in 1877. ln November of that year, phones were installed in the Con Vir- ginia Mine in Virginia City. In 1881, the telephone was introduced in Reno by Bell's cousin, telegrapher 'Frank Bell, who received two telephones with in- structions for connecting the instruments. The Telephone: 100 ifears The first telephone exchange opened in Virginia City in February 1882. It was equipped to handle 115 telephones and reached its peak of250 a few years later. By 1889, Frank Bell had received a license to install the instru- ments in Reno and other parts of Nevada, and a switchboard-was installed in Reno to serve 15 subscribers. By 1891, Bell, who had served briefly as governor of Nevada, established an exchange in Reno. The following year he received a franchise for his opera- tion. In January 1913, Bell Telephone Company of Nevada was incor- porated to serve as a holding company during the construction of the first transcontinental telephone line in 1914, which was to pass through Sparks and Reno. Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co., which had been serving parts of Nevada, transferred all its property to the new company, including switchboards, poles and wires in the City of Sparks. Still, Nevada Bell's expansion and growth did not get underway in earnest until 1919 when the company began to build long distance lines to crisscross the state and began acquisition of exchanges to expand its operations throughout northern Nevada. One ofthe earliest telephone switchboards: 1881. It proved quite a challenge for operators. Most dramatic growth occurred for Nevada Bell and the City of Sparks beginning in the 1950's and accelerating in the 1960's and early 1970's. ln 1956, Nevada Bell was able to meet telephone service require- ments in Sparks with fewer than 4,000 telephones. By 1960, growth and modernization dictated construction of a large, mod- em central office on Prater Way capable of handling 10,000 tele- phonelines. ln 1968, an addition was made to the Sparks central office to keep up with the volatile growth. Also in 1968, 290 tons of overhead telephone wire were swept from the sky along east Fourth Street, Prater Way and Highway 40 east to Wadsworth. The overhead wire-part of it on the scene since l9l4 and most of it since I929-was replaced by microwave and underground cables. ln l972, to meet growth and increased service demands. Nevada Bell built an electronic telephone switching system in Sun Valley. The No. 2 ESS office-the first of its kind in the Bell System- was brought in as modular units and erected on the site. ln 1973, to accommodate the ever increasing number of long dis- tance calls from and to Nevada, Nevada Bell constructed a new switching equipment building at the corner of First and Center Streets in Reno and installed a 4A switcher, one of the most modern electronic, computerized systems. ln February l975, Nevada Bell introduced Traffic Service Posi- tion System service QTSPSJ for Sparks, Reno and neighboring communities. A new building was constructed at 2590 Orovada St. on the boundary between Sparks and Reno to house the new operator facility, which features electronic operator consoles and computerized operation and billing. Also in 1975, a second addition was completed to the Sparks cen- tral oflice to keep up with business and residence telephone service needs in the growing community. The telephone equipment in service in Sparks and other commun- ities served by Nevada Bell represents the most modern avail- able. lt is technology developed and improved over the 100 years since Bell's invention first spoke. Hlluhl fs f M VV: FZN,fufr ,- ,,, fer. if f j',dff'i f ,,il M H Nevada Bell Operator Keith Montoya, a 1973 Sparks High School graduate, at his TSPS electronic console: the electronics and computerized operation of the TSPS system providing operator services to Sparks contrast sharply with the l88l switch- board at left. One of the thousands of printed circuits found in electronic telephone switching systems, such as the one serving Sun Valley: the Bell System network is capable of making any one of one hundred million billion connections in seconds. The telephones in Sparks are connected to a Bell System network whose complexity permits it to make any of l00 million billion different connections in seconds and allows normal conversation across town or across the world. Customer convenience items, such as Touch-ToneR and Trim- lineR, and decorator specialities, such as Nevada Bell's colorful Design LineT series, make the telephone a pleasure both to use and to look at. ln its 100 years of service, the telephone has come to be acknowl- edged as truly one of the inventions to dramatically affect the course of history.
