Then Pete turns to his tools and continues his work As I, too, go on my way, And perhaps it will be, l'll not see him again Throughout the ensuing day. But the fact that he took some of his time To send that hello to me, Leaves such a feeling of joy and good will That it makes me glad just to be In a school where students a lot like myself Can enjoy, and are allowed to share The feeling of friendship, and peace and ease, That is so constantly there. And when, for a short time, that feeling did go, And I failed to hear that call, The sky became cloudy and the sun did dim, And I, and we all, sensed the loss of that feeling That somehow only Pete can, and does Create with his simple yet wonderfully fine Salute, Hello there, young man. Youth is not a time-it is a state of mind. lt is not a matter of rosy cheeks, sparkling eyes and agile limbs, it is a temper of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions, it is a freshness of the deep springs of life. Youth means a temperamental predomi- nance of courage over timidity, of the ap- petite for adventure over love of ease. No one grows old by merely living a num- ber of years, people grow old only by de- serting their ideals. Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up the enthusiasm and exhuber ance of youth wrinkles the soul. Periods of worry, doubt, fear, despair an self-distrust are the long years that bo the head and turn the spirit back to dust You are as young as your faith, as old a your doubt, as young as your self-confi dence, as old as your fear, as young as you hope, as old as your despair. Your heart is a wireless station, so long a it receives messages of beauty, hope, cour age, grandeur, and strength from the earth from men and from life itself, then an only then are you young. When the wires of your heart are crosse and it is covered with the snows of pes simism and the ice of cynicism, then hav you grown old and may God have merc on your soul. -AUTHOR HNKNOW . v V We Bank Zo A6716 ?ulurc We look to the future, with the anticipation that all our hopes and dreams will come true. During these past three years we of the Student Body of Sparks High School, have been establishing the foundation for our future lives. Those of you who remain here will see in your future a new school, a new atmosphere, a new life ahead. As you continue to prepare and plan for the future, keep this Book of Memories, and from the lessons of the past your future will be brighter and more hopeful. lf, when you look back in years to come, you wistfully recall the pleasant memories of your school life, then our goal in bringing 'you our 1952 TERMINUS will have been accomplished. Sincerely your, Jayne Williams Richard Andreini Co-Editors Albert Forget Business Manager Mae A. Denevi Advisor ffldmzuzsfrafzau Svlzovl Heard The Sparks School Board serving our high school has handled many difficult problems very competently throughout the year. Many hours have been spent in work on the new high school, its actual construction and its future furnishings. Two outlying districts of Vista and Lockwood have been consolidated to the school district this year adding greatly to the school territory under the iurisdiction of the Sparks Board. Because of an increased enrollment, the School Board, before the close of the present school year will have five members instead of the present three. State law requires that when enrollment for a district exceeds fifteen hundred there will be a five-member board. With the increased staff to take over the difficult problems connected with a school, such as the selection of the teachers and approval of the budget, we will be assured of the best possible educational opportunities. The Sparks School Board plays a very vital part in the education of the youth of our community, and they are to be congratulated for a iob well-done, ff, 0 -11 A a NLF'- Lvl ,ffl fl X , I ,t Y x8 Mrs Agnes Risley Clerk Mrs Agnesl? High School clays will de- cide whether the foundation to your future will be weak or strong. We, the faculty and administra- tors of Sparks High School, are here to teach you and advise you. Whether the cement will be strong, depends upon you. With your cooperation the opportuni- ties placed before you will de- velop the firm base needed for whatever you plan. Let's work together for your fu- ture. Principal .2fM. What next? Will it be more schooling, a iob, the service or marriage? Whatever it is the graduates will take in stride with a minimum of worry, because you have confidence in your future. Your lack of experience and care- free attitude are distinct advan- tages in facing a troubled world. Perhaps the friendly atmosphere of your school and the friend- ships that have been made form the background for your opti- mism. Keep these friendships and strive to make new ones because they will be your best possessions. Whatever your fu- ture I know you will accept its responsibilities with courage. The plan adopted included a nine man committee composed of students and teachers appointed annually by the President who judged programs before they were presented for student body meetings. As a result more entertaining skits and programs were given. In addition, the council revised their constitution and limited its membership. Only those organiza- tions having a written constitution were allowed to send representatives. lt dealt with violators on the Senior Bench and gave permission for various school functions and activities. The first and most important problem brought up for dis- cussion was the project of bettering the relations and sports- manship among the schools in the Western Conference and all the schools throughout the state. Carson was the instigator of this program and relayed their ideas to Sparks and to the other schools of this area. The possibility of organizing an Honor Society based on scholarship was discussed, and the idea was left in the plan- ning stages. The problem of better Student Body Programs was discussed and the Judging Committee made some great strides toward creating more interest in the Student Programs. The conscientious efforts of the i952 Student Council were a vital part in the affairs of the Sparks High School Student Body. President is Nl NE Sgilpt IL B Dom NELSON 092. ,class Ba Am? Yet, this past year has left many happy memories in the hearts of the graduating Seniors. The Seniors were active all through the year in extra-curricular activities. In the field of sports, sixteen Senior boys earned letters in football. Basketball season showed five Senior boys playing on the Varsity team. Looking at Girls' sports, we see that Donna Ronchetti, Lucille Nelson, Shirley Hancock, Irene Ruiz and Claire Risley were particularly outstanding in G. A. A. lndirectly connected with sports were the five yell-leaders-three of whom were Seniors. We shall always remember the lusty cheers of head cheerleader Jayne Williams and cheerleaders Nora Stanton and Donna Ronchetti, at our football and basketball games. Always appearing at the games and leading our own band were the five pert maiorettes and the drum maiorette. Three Seniors were maiorettes-Lola Clark, Gael Sullivan and Irene Phoenix. Drum maiorette was Gerry Bishop. Flagbearers were Seniors Ann Cunningham, Juanita Creveling, Louise Davidson and Phyllis Boyer. The Senior class was also well represented in the band with six members-Norman Cummins, Bev Sue Hug, Wanda Eason, Marge Eaton, Shirley Allen and Neil Baker. Another extra-curricular activity is the field of Dramatics. The All-School Play, held in November was entitled f'It's Spring Again. The cast of thirteen included ten Seniors-Shirley Allen, Jayne Williams, Bev Hug, Harry Ericson, Gerry Bishop, Don Nelson, Neil Baker, Lola Clark, Keith Odle and Ann Cunningham. The Senior Play and the annual Forensic, held in the Spring, were also successful, with many Seniors participating. Under the leadership of Miss Naveran and Mr. Robb, Senior Class Advisors, all Senior social events, especially Senior Cut Day and the Senior Ball were rousing successes. Now, as the school year of T952 comes to a close, the Senior Class will leave the hallowed halls of Sparks High. Nevertheless, they will long be remembered as one of the most outstanding classes ever to graduate from Sparks High School, CFFICERS CARLA ARCHIBALD ERNEST BROWN ELSIE SORANI TOMMY RICH Q M f 1' vwifmf Nui P fr? They displayed a high percentage of representation on both the football and basketball squads. On the gridiron during the season we saw Ed Nixon, Clarence Nevin, Jerry Sturm, Hank Hicks, Richard Giannotti, John Langhans, Jim Cudworth, and Herbie Iler giving their full support to the Rail- roaders. Members of the Sparks Hoopsters were Henry Hicks and Dale Doan who ably made the A squad and three made the B squad. Helen Argeres and Sim- mie Cooper kept reviving school spirit by their enthusiastic yells, Jo Ann Sea- berry and Dawn Rivers displayed their ability as maiorettes. Besides being very active in sports, the Junior Class can also boast of talent in the fields of drama and music, as shown in the Junior Frolic. As the closing projects of this eventful year, the Junior Prom and Junior-Senior Banquet were fine examples of their untiring efforts. Wes! Sophvmorc 611155 hall as the class of '54 makes its debut into Sparks High School. They were officially made members of Sparks Student Body at the close of the first week with the annual initiation program. Many of the Sophomore boys displayed their ath- letic ability by going out for football and basket- ball. Several of these boys were admitted to Block S after having earned a letter in one of the three maior sports. During the month of December, the Sophs pre- sented the annual Soph Hop with Winter Won- derland as their theme. Toward the end of the school year, the Sopho- mores ordered their Junior Class rings for the fol- lowing year and they hoped to receive them by September of '52, Tragedy struck the Sophomore Class as Blain Krupp was drowned at Washoe Lake in the month of December. Starting off the school year with a bang, the Band made its initial appearance by appearing in the Annual Sparks Labor Day Parade, thus setting a precedent tor future Sparks High School bands. The Band consists of thirty-five members, in addi- tion to tour tlag-bearers, namely, Ann Cunning- ham, ,Juanita Creveling, Phyllis Boyer, and Louise Davidson. Leading the Band with snappy routines, was the maiorette squad consisting of Drum Nlaiorette Gerry Bishop and Head Maiorette Lola Clark, with their assistants Dawn Rivers, Jo Ann Seaberry, Gael Sullivan, and lrene Phoenix. The Band's second appearance of the v- -, Jim Reed, Baritone, Larry Belmont, Horny Richard Hoy, Trombone. I l . French year was in the Annual Jack's Carnival Parade on September 27. Their spark! ling maroon and gold uniforms were later seen at the Lovelock, Reno, Fallon, and Manogue games at our own Dil worth Field, and also at the Hawthorne, Stewart, and Douglas games away from home. Next on the agenda ot Band activities was the Homecoming Day Parade at the University of Nevada on October 27. On December 7, the Band played at the dedication of the new Reno High gym- D nasium. On April 25, the Annual Band Festival was held, with the University of Ne- vada in charge. Many band members were in the clinic bands on this day, and Sparks was rated highly by the adiudicators. During the year, under the direction of Mr. Erle Kissel, the Glee Club has had the pleasure of entertaining a number of civic organizations such as the American Legion Women's Auxiliary Club and presenting various programs for Fathers' Night, F.H.A. Initiation and the Christmas Party in the Junior and Senior High Schools. The highlight of the year was the Annual Music Festival held at the new Reno High School on th first Saturday in April. Several high schools of the surrounding area sent their Glee Clubs, and they participated in one of the most successful festivals ever staged. A total of fifty students had the benefits of the club this year with fourteen of them being boys, thus forming the first Boys' Glee Club in some years. The girls' turnout again outnumbered the boys' with a total of thirty-six feminine voices. We would like to thank Mr. Kissel for being our director for he certainly did wonders for the club. We can say the Glee Club reached its highest peak in several years. LOLA CLARK President First Semester 2711616 Win or lose, the team was cheered on by the Pep Club who offered their undying spirit to football and basketball games. Pep Club presented several skits for rallies and Student Body Meetings illustrating their ability and interest in school sports. Without the enthusiasm ot these girls Sparks' teams might not have come through with some important victories during the football seasons. Our representative who received the honor this year was Carol Tollefson. By showing outstanding ability at Girls' State in leader- ship, personality, character, and dramatics, she was chosen as one of the two delegates to represent the State of Nevada. During her stay in the Capital, she was offered a more complete study of our national government and had the splendid opportunity of seeing the many famous places of interest. Carol will long remember her pleasant associations and experiences in Washington, D. C. Girl f Staff Last June eight girls from Sparks met in Stewart with ninety girls from every high school in Nevada. The eight days were spent in the study of city, county, and state governments. Elections were held for each section and most of the Sparks girls held an office. Trips were made to Carson City, Lake Tahoe and the University of Nevada. On the closing evening during the regular program, the leaders announced the winners of the goal of each Girls' Stater-the delegates to go to Girls' Nation in Washington, D. C. Here Sparks High School came through with flying colors as Carol Tollefson was chosen as a delegate and Bev Sue Hug as an alternate. v i 4 A . svq 4 v A .VIT Y 91 A Y it A 3 NAD atviiaq T' 4 wins AD XXUIAD4 X Val A vm . . Boys representing high schools from all over the State gathered to spend a week learning, from first-hand experience, about the workings of our City, County, and State governments. Boys' State is an annual event sponsored by the American Legion. ' The first days are spent electing officials, from among the boys, to construct models of our City and State governments. The citizens of Boys' State had their choice of attending Law School or Police School, in the mornings. Each School was headed by corresponding city officials from Reno. The afternoons were devoted to athletics, music, and newspaper activities. Evenings, the boys were entertained by such prominent people as the Mayor of Reno, Governor Charles Russell, and the Chief Justice of the Nevada Supreme Court. The Governor of Boys' State and the winner of the Boys' State extemporaneous speech contest had the honor of representing Nevada at Boys' Nation held in Washington, D. C. Since it is such a worthwhile event and honor, all Junior boys should work to ob- tain the privilege of attending Bovs' State. 7 ww :wi-'EE r ' 1 1 is y 3 if ol' A f l i 2 z w 1' fl .4 lx ' fp S- I t . Dinner given for the ten Senior girls from Sparks High School who have attained the highest scholastic averages. The girls from the class of '52 who attended the dinner were Shirley Allen, Geraldine Bishop, Kathrine Bassemier, Shirley Hancock, Bev Sue Hug, Catherine Parlanti, Claire Risley, Donna Ronchetti, Carol Tollefson, and Jayne Williams. The theme forthe evening was Memories and it was certainly a most appropriate one for each of the ten girls will have that evening among their most cherished memories in years to come. Miss Evelyn Mantle was toast-mistress and Mrs. Agnes Risley, as president of the organization, welcomed the group. Friendship was the topic discussed by Miss Lucile Stone, and Mrs. Betty Miller gave an interesting speech on Character, The group was told about the girls' activities during their high school careers by Mrs. Teddyanna Keele. Mrs. Nellie Freeman told about Cottey College, the P.E.O. Junior College in Missouri, after which the girls were presented with original poems cleverly written about each of them by Mrs. Ella Norris. To conclude the evening each of the honored guests was asked to tell what career she was planning to follow upon graduating from high school. When the dinner was over, the ten Senior girls knew that this evening would linger many years in the minds of all of them no matter what paths their lives might follow. 1 1 if I 3' 5 1 gl gl ll' al ll IP' ul gl 'W A :- J, ' U J Q f SSL ' I as . at s c W, o 5, 0 W ld V l'f1 ?!?'!'f ! During the past season, Sparks participated in the following meets: Sparks and Stewart at Carson , April l2 Sparks and Hawthorne at Yerington . April l9 Yerington 20-30 Relays May 3 Western Zone at Reno May lO Nevada State at Boulder City May l7 Tracksters began training in early March and their first event of the season was the lnterclass Meet which was won by the Seniors. This served as a measure for the potentialities of the team which would affect their success during the season. Although the track team was small in numbers, their ability was proved by the success they enioyed during the season. Graduating Seniors contributed a great deal to the team and their point-making will be greatly missed next year. Participating in the last sport of their high school career were the following, Marvin Baker, weights, Ed Miller, pole vault and middle distances, Maurice Wright, dashes and relay, Alan Sutton, hurdles, Richard Andreini, discus, and Clarence Nevin, dashes and relay. Nevin, although a Junior, completed his eligibility this year. Under the watchful eye of Coaches Robb and Anderson, the team improved steadily through the season, and threatened several school records.
