LINDA HUGGINS Editor-in-Chief The staff of the 1962-63 SO- WO hopes that as you turn the pages of this book, the accomplish- ments, expectations, triumphs, and all other events which have painted the picture of this school year, have been faithfully portrayed. We have worked this year with one goal in mind, to turn out the best SO- WO yet. As editor this year, I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who worked so long and hard to make this book a reality. VICKIE LEE Assistant Editor ' Dedication The IX edition of the SO-WO is dedicated to one who has long de- served the honor. With love and patience, she has taught the pri- mary age students of our school for several years. This faithful per- son has been an inspiration to all students. As she lingers toward ed- ucation of the youth, we will always remember: Where ' er we roam, whatever realms to see. Our heart untravelled turns to thee. We dedicate this IX Volume to Miss Helen Faulkner. School days continue to be the memory mak- ing days. We grow in stature, strength, knowl- edge, and happiness. This growth must not be lost to time . To recall time is impossible, but to recall events is made possible by records, such as this, the IX edition of the SO-WO. Build the record today so that tomorrow we may call upon it with pride recalling those persons and events. Appreciation for recall grows as years pass. Please make today one that will bring joy forever. MR. JOHN K, WOOTEN - Principal Cenoir County Moard of Education The Lenoir County Board of Education, although it is not seen by the students in everyday school life, is the guiding force by which our school functions. With the welfare of the school and the student body in mind, the board has made many of our projects possible. MR. HENRY H. RITA JOHNSON - CHIEF In addition to leading the Southwood majorettes for the past two years, Rita Johnson has served as chief of the Lenoir County Marching Band during her senior year. Due to her capable leadership, our majorettes have added much to ac- tivities throughout the school year. South wood Band The Southwood Senior Band under the direction of Mrs. Frances Hilburn has added color and school spirit to the many activities of our school. They have performed at several basketball games this season. Also, they have marched in parades in Kinston, Wilson, and New Bern. In addition to this, the band entertained students and members of the Southwood community in several concerts. Surely they are to be commended for these fine performances. The Southwood Beginning Band has worked diligently this year. Each member looks forward to the day that he will be part of the advanced band. Each one knows that this is possible only through hard work and faithful practice each day. Director - MRS. Each year this organization sponsors a Halloween carnival to raise money for various school needs. In the fall of 1962, many members solicited funds for our new activities bus. The beneficial effect of the Parent-Teacher Association, which has been felt by every pupil and parent of the school district, could be doubled or even tripled if more members of the community were to devote as much service to the organization as do its current leaders and supporters. High school graduates are all good men, filled with enthu- siasm and the desire to make good in life. You can put 10 high school graduates to work in the same department of a company - each doing the same kind of work and with the same opportunity to learn and advance. At the end of a year, two or three will be at the top of their group - the rest will be where they started. Why? Because real value always rises to the top. The more you put into a job, the more you get out of it. You must give more to your jobs before you can expect more out of them. Maintain at all times a positive, constructive, progres- sive attitude toward your job. Always think in terms of how things can be done - never in terms of why they cannot. E. I.
