Text from Pages 1 - 88 of the 1957 volume:

Foreword The doors through which we pass . . . the corridors. . . the moments of sociability before class . , . the classrooms . . . youth coming and going . . . The purpose of the 1957 So-Wo is to record the never ending events of the students of Southwood School ... In the coming years, the So-Wo will keep alive the memories we have gathered here within these hallowed walls . . . The onrushing future will bring new faces and changes to the scene of our school, but there shall be for us the record of the friends we knew, the things we did, and the memo- ries that we shall always hold near and dear. Phyllis Alford, Editor DEDICATION Known to all students as Miss Kate, she has been called the Great Mistress of Educa- tion. It is fitting and important at this time that we dedicate this publication to the greatness of her achievements and to the accomplishments she has achieved by inspiring hundreds of good American children. Education is democracy in action; in it, all children are free and equal. Using this as her great principle of teaching, she has inspired the fullest expression of freedom, thought, and ideals. She is living positive proof of the American educational system. Alert, keen, humorous, and interested, she has opened the door of opportunity for so many for so long. It can be said that she has conquered the years rather than the years have conquered her. The character she possesses and the character she builds makes the foundation for this community. With sincerest appreciation for her devotion to all children, we dedicate this third Volume of The So- Wo to Miss Kate McDaniel. PrincipaVs Message As we record here, in picture and memory, those persons and events that have meant so much to our way of life, let us be mindful that ours is only a be- ginning job. We must begin the foun- dation and build it strong so that those that come after us may find this rock substantial and capable. In the years to come may we look back upon this record as being a store- house of treasures for the good that the students, the teachers, and other per- sonnel have achieved. John K.
