In 1933 Mr. John Winfield assumed the role of principal with a staff of thirteen teachers. Mr. James Barbee became principal in 1937 and worked with sixteen teachers. Mr. George Warren accepted the principalship in 1938 and had a staff of fourteen teachers. Mr. Warren served as principal until 1948. The faculty in 1955 was made up of twenty- nine teachers. In 1926 the school enrollment was 436, in 1954 it was more than 700. Many noted community servants have given of their time and effort to the upbuild- ing of this institution. The first local school board was composed of: G. F. Loftin, E. L. Rouse, John Gooding, Clyde Dudley, and J. J. Harper. Other community leaders who have served with distinction are: Blackledge Harper, Roland Vause, David Williams, Keith Williams. Jarmon Becton, Adair Kennedy, and Albert Johnson. . The county, too, has profited by the good leadership this community has supplied. Will Becton and Forrest Waller have given their service as members of The Lenoir County Board of Education, rendering many years of valuable wisdom. The county, school, and community are indebted to other educational leaders whose wisdom and experience have guided with dignity the minds and efforts of those here at Southwood. These persons are: E. E. Sams, retired superintendent; Miss Virginia James, former supervisor; H. H. Bullock, present superintendent; and Miss Merle Scott, present supervisor. The potential of this community has been touched barely, and knowing this, the people look forward, with eager anticipation, to the progress the future holds.
