SoutJuvoacC School Southwood School is located on Highway 12, four miles South of Kinston, North Carolina. The community extends over the center of Lenoir County and embraces some of the county ' s most fertile and productive soil. Lenoir County was the first county, in the United States, to complete consolidation of all the white schools. This, within itself, was a great achievement and one in which the Southwood Community was proud to play a part. Originally this was not Southwood Community but a group of smaller communities, which were as follows: Maple Grove, Lynwood, McGowan, Millbranch, Coahoma, Wood- in gton and Maple Cypress. With the coming of consolidation plans, the good people, of these communities, joined to form what is now the Southwood Community and selected the site to form what is now the Southwood School. The school was first known as Wood- ington, and was changed to its present name. The word Southwood was conceived by Mr. G. F. Loftin. He took South from Southwest and Wood from Woodington and com- bined these two words. One-half of the site upon which the school is located was given by Mr. G. F. Loftin. Lenoir County purchased the additional campus. The first building was a two story one, composed of thirteen rooms. In the space of a few years, in 1936, four additional class- rooms were added, and in 1946, a modern cafeteria, Home Economics, Agriculture and shop rooms were enclosed in a beautiful, new modern structure. Ten more rooms were added in 1954. The doors of Southwood School opened in 1926. Mr. Paul Packs served as principal and with him were twelve teachers. In 1928 the first class graduated; only nine in number. Mr. H. H. Bullock became principal in 1929 and serving with him were twelve teachers.
